I find it funny how Marissa, the character whose entire gimmick and purpose for existing is pankration, is the worst example of a pankratist to come out of street fighter

As a guy who plays Jeffry in VF, yeah I still think your critiques are spot-on. I think partly of Jeffry not exactly being representative of Pankration is partly because his original inspiration was Willie Williams, the famous Karateka. His strikes look more akin to Karate (he used to even have the bottle chop in older games as his back+Punch move IIRC) and it later goes more into pro wrestling (his big command throws are essentially Gorilla Press slams and GTSs). Loved the first video, and enjoyed this just as much too! Cheers!

I enjoyed this video as well as your first. But isn't it true that Sparta allowed headbutts? I always heard it said that they allowed everything except biting, eye gouging, and attacking the genitals. But their Pankration was consdiered particularly brutal in Greece. Just a myth?

Just a myth, correct. Spartans didn't compete in pankration other than locally, where foreigners were not allowed to spectate, so Pausanias (Roman-era source) is purely speculating, or retelling Spartan propaganda, when he states that even eye gouging was allowed. Mind you Pausanias also tells of a boxer that struck through his opponent's ribs (Creugas) with his fingers and ripped out his bowels, and other such absurditiies, so he is hardly a credible source on the matter.

It uh... It's a kick that goes down. I would be shocked if there WASN'T documentation of that existing in ancient times. I imagine it's a very common thought for a professional fighter who uses their feet to go "Okay but what would happen if this went the other way?" and I don't really see how that would have been much different back then. The human body is largely the same as it was back then after all.

I never knew Urien was supposed to be Greek and practice pankration. Now granted i never played third strike, i grew up with Street Fighter IV. I always thought he's just an oiled up supervillain lol

1.urien is not a anti-hero dude is straight up tyrannical. look at his losing time-out animation in 3rd strike, its jarring. 2.gills walk speed is slow because he weighs 745lbs, more than zangief, rufus, hugo and abigail. otherwise amazing video.

I very much agree with the first point, It's completely wrong to see Urien as anything close to an Anti-hero when he clearly has a tyrannical attitude and is shown to despise everyone he fights. A lot of his English victory quotes talk about him demanding others to kneel before him, and a lot of his voice lines are about calling his opponents "pitiful scum".
