If you doubt the bias of our leftist media, read the critics' reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. They can't stand that it doesn't support the "victim" mentality and that he (gasp) pulled himself up by his bootstraps to attend Yale Law School and become a successful writer.

Incredible performance. This is JD Vance’s memoir; and yes, having a mother and a birth father, one from Lexington, Ky and one from the Appalachia hills of Irvine, Ky, there was a striking similarity of the differences between country and the city folk. They both escaped a different kind of physical and emotional poverty to create a better life.

They loved the book, but hated the movie, bc it came out a time where the "pull yourself up from your bootstraps" theory and hope for America through Trump was enraging liberals who wanted to make excuses for ne'er do well people who refuse to work or abide by the law, and use poverty as the reason. If what JD Vance accomplished in this book is true, (which it is) it destroys their narrative. And we can't have any of that, now, can we.

We pass on the traumas of our ancestors and how do we break that cycle; that is the real question. Powerful. A lifetime challenge, yet opportunity. Enjoyed the movie because it is about culture and it is about one mans escape, and conflict between the love for family and the desire to experience his own happiness.

Watching the first four movies I had ever seen, I found myself asking, "Who is that exciting new actress? I'll have to watch for the credits." She becomes so absorbed into each role that she "becomes" that person, and it's hard to recognize her as Amy Adams. On the fourth Amy Adams movie I saw, I answered my own question, "I wonder if that's Amy Adams." In several successive movies, I recognized her every time. Then came "Hillbilly Elegy," and I completely failed to recognize her in the reviews. She did it again. Both Amy Adams and Glenn Close deserve Oscars, but they've both been overlooked.

This film was raw and touched close to many family stories. But not without leaving the audience with a spark of hope at the end. It's only a film to criticize if the 'melodrama' of addiction and cycle of dysfunction hasn't touched your life and family in any degree.

I love how people are saying how this is a bad representation of Appalachians but this is a memoir about HIS LIFE STORY. Which means that everything that happened in the movie happened in real life. It’s not like this is a fictional story.

Maybe it’s because he’s not actually an Appalachian hillbilly but claims to be. His book is a memoir but the way he generalizes and criticizes the region and culture is offensive. And he also claims to be a spokesperson for our region which is laughable considering that Appalachia doesn’t claim him. You should check out all of the incredible books written by people from the region in response to his book.

Thank you Ron Howard, Glenn Close, Amy Adams, and JD Vance for writing this book and making this movie and bringing it to life on screen. I grew up around young people that didn’t have a Mee Ma to love them enough to raise them and mentor their hearts and minds from drugs and other bad habits of crime and their lives were truly wasted. JD is one of the lucky blessed ones. I pray some young person watching this movie will take to heart if they are on the wrong road will be able to turn and go the right way in their lives! It’s such an epidemic of our young people in this country, not just in Appalachia, but all over this nation that need the love of a MeeMa in their lives! God bless you all!🌹

I've never listened to them, I make up my own mind if I think a TV series (like Touched By An Angel, remember how critics said it would never last??), book or movie is good. Critics are worthless. I haven't yet seen this movie, the trailer & clips that I've watched tell me it is GREAT!! And the fact that it's based on a true story makes it even better!

God forbid we acknowledge that white people can be poor and suffer too and that (roll my eyes) “white privilege” isn’t always the norm. Most critics nobody has ever heard of...hence they are expendable...just one unknown persons opinion at best! A difficult subject matter for sure, but it represents a true experience...wonderfully produced and directed with a tremendous cast! The two lead actresses once again put in perfect, outstanding performances. This is the kind of film that used to be more appreciated by critics who knew how to understand the value of all the production elements...they seem to have vanished!
