Coloring Creativity: Things We Never Think About

Adult coloring is a creative hobby, right? So why do you struggle when it comes to imagining new project ideas, inventing your own color palettes, or simply adding unique touches to your own projects? Shouldn't a creative hobby make you more creative???
Professional illustrator Amy Shulke shares observations on why colorists often struggle with basic creativity. These are real hurdles and once you find your way around them, you'll notice more (and better!) ideas, popping into your mind when you least expect it.

I have a lot of adult color books, markers, pens, pencils and journals I draw and write in with creative lettering. I never think about blending and I pick up colors I want to grab to try. I layer, blend and paint and mix and have fun with it. It’s a relaxing pastime for me to do art - it relieves stress because I don’t have to overthink it or worry about it. Most sewing and embroidery and paper art does the same. Art is my therapy. 🥰❤

Thanks! It's fun to just sit down and play with an idea sometimes. When everything I color is for a class, it's harder to be creative :)

I love watching you create! That crow is amazing! I am a "maker", not a "creator". I only color stamped images, which I enjoy, but I would never consider myself an artist or creator. YOU are both.

Don't sell yourself short. You're close enough to count in my book :) I've seen a ton of colorists doing amazing things that artists can't/don't/won't do. Then again, I like making stuff too. Not everything has to be a revolutionary masterpiece.

I remember the first time I made a card. My thinking was, if …can do it, so can I. I wondered why no one said they loved my cards. Since then, I’ve learned a lot, but have more to learn. Now, when I find one of those cards, I cringe when I thought they were praise worthy. They looked more like little kid made them. I’ve actually took all but a few off my KZbin lists. The few I kept had something that taught more about mixed media and different skills than coloring.

That's totally normal. My mom had a hallway in her house where she had about a dozen of my paintings and drawings hanging in frames going back to the fifth grade. It was always embarrassing to walk down the Hall of Hell and I was mortified to think of how many people looked at my early scribbles. But we all gotta start somewhere .
