As a girl with ADHD-among other brain things-tutorials like these are soooooooooo helpful. I love linguistics, but still I struggle so hard to pay attention to a like 40 minute voice tutorial where it's just a person calmly talking into a camera. Every tutorial should be like these, it's so much easier to stay focused on the tutorial and actually get something from it with all the random funny shit going on. It might be silly but I really deeply appreciate these fun guides/tutorials, thank you ♥✨

I’ve been out and transitioning for a year now, but I’ve always been so uncomfortable with my voice. I tried seeing a speech therapist in my area, but they just overwhelmed me with worksheets and terminology, I stopped going after about 4 months, and I kinda gave up for a while. Only lately, as I’ve started visually passing in my day to day life only to for people to flip their pronouns for me as soon as I speak, has my voice dysphoria really gotten to me. This video series made it a lot more accessible to understand resonance. I’ve still got a whole bunch of work to do, but im grateful for it. Especially that bit at the end, about how it’ll be incremental, and how the people you see online are showing you their finished product. It can be super discouraging to not see that kind of progress quickly, and having that recognized and acknowledged, it helped me feel better about it. Thanks!!! I’m definitely going to stay subscribed for the next one ❤

For the folks scouring the comments for... I dunno. Perspective? Anyway here is some stuff from my own experiences. In my experience of a little over a year, progress for this is just about made out of plateaus. You get to a point, then little to no tangible progress for a while. It is quite easy to get discouraged by a lack of progress, but if you stick at it and keep trying new stuff (perhaps watching a tutorial to get a push in that direction), then you will find yourself smiling like an idiot at the sounds you just made. Because suddenly, there is progress, and a whole lot of it. Perhaps it isn't to the point where you are satisfied, but the work you put in is paying off. You are doing it. After that comes yet another plateau, but don't be discouraged. Put in the time and effort, and you will get there. Do not overstress your voice. It can be easy to keep pushing whenever you practice, but after a certain point you are just causing damage that will just slow you down (Lucy pointed this out, but it is important so it bears repeating). Finding the point you need to stop at is something you are going to have to judge by yourself based on how your throat feels. But when that happens, take a break, however short you make it. Allow your throat to recover. My biggest problem is vocal endurance, and I have to keep restraining myself from continuing because I do not want to damage it even more. Don't be afraid to slow down a bit. For those of you who are in an environment which doesn't permit you to practice freely, look for the moments where you can. When your parents are away, on the walk to school, whatever. If you look for it, you will find the time to practice. My preferred method is to sing whenever I am walking somewhere. Through experience, I know how it feels when I am doing a voice I am happy with so I try to reach that while I do this. I run out of breath every once in a while and need to just breathe every once in a while, but that is fine. I don't have the endurance to fill the entire time with practice anyway. I hope this helps someone, somewhere at some point in time. Also the tutorial above has the seal of approval from this random internet denizen. Lucy is doing a great job of making things simple. By the way, Lucy, since you are probably reading this, please make a video with cool/funny stuff you got from your degree. Even if not too useful, it is entertaining.

This is the most helpful exercise I've come across that has actually helped me explore the muscles that control my resonance. Fun things I discovered: when projecting your voice towards the wall in front of you, if you start to aim the projection on a downward angle, the pitch raises. I also realized that visualizing my vocal tract like a deflated, limp sock helps. I try to keep it like that as I talk. It comes out sort of like doing a exaggerated "sleepy" voice. Then I try to annunciate starting from the lips (front) first and slowly moving back until you can start pronouncing words clearly while still keeping the very back limp like a sock or deflated balloon. Thank you for your videos. My voice feminization journey has leveled up TREMENDOUSLY because of your videos. Transvoicelessons was still so important for knowledge and being aware of what I am trying to achieve. It was like gathering all the pieces of dissassembled furniture from IKEA. What you gave me were the instructions on how to build it. Thank you. For anyone just starting out in voice feminization: The first 1-3 months will be the hardest. You might have no progress during this time because you don't know what you're doing. But then you will start learning; seperating what is helpful and unhelpful. At that point, you will start hearing the results and the progress starts becoming way faster and easier. You will get there!

I really appreciate your videos. I only just discovered them, and they are more approachable than others I've found. Voice dysphoria is one of the major factors to me, and can ruin any feeling good I may have. I don't have a really deep voice, but even just a hint of masculinity in it can make me not want to talk. I hope one day you'll make a video on how to have the confidence to use the feminine voice around others. My voice almost automatically goes deeper when talking with others, and it's hard to find friends who will remind me to not slip into my old voice. Keep up the good work. You really do help those of us who don't have good support or help. 💜

lucyyy thank you so much for making these videos! as a baby trans im so overwhelmed everything, and your asmr and tutorials really help a lot 💚🏳⚧ i also have a small linguistics nitpicking if you don't mind ... I know linguistics is not the point of the video, and i could also be completely wrong! so take it for a grain of salt. You mentioned that the in mango ([mæŋɡoʊ]) cuts off resonance like /k/ does. /k/ is (like all plosives) an obstruent and cuts off airflow. /ŋ/ on the other hand (like all nasal consonants) is a sonorant, also called resonant. It does not cut off airflow, and so resonates. /ŋ/ and /m/ are the same besides their places of articulation. I think the resonance is interrupted actually because the second syllable starts with /g/ (which is just /k/ with voicing).

Advice for people watching these videos, always get enough sleep, eat, and drink water so you can always sound your best! :)

So far this series has been _mostly_ stuff I've understood already, though framing it as trying to throw your voice forward definitely helped (Unfortunately I think I'm mostly at the "just practice dummy" phase 😭). With that said though, this is definitely the tutorial series I'll be sending to anyone else just getting started. It's easy to understand and genuinely entertaining to watch. I really think that the "entertaining" part is an important aspect to. I'm just worried that my voice sounds unnatural (I'm not straining, but I'm working on pitch and having it sound more natural and airy, it's a bit of a mystery to me. Resonance is going *pretty okay* imo but idk).

Update: I discovered it was false vocal fold constriction, I fixed it!!!! ^~^

K is a Plosive, not a Fricative Pulmonic Obstruents include Plosives, Fricatives, and Affricates Plosives allow zero airflow or resonance at the time of articulation prior to disarticulation, or the release of air plosives include p, b, t, d, k, g, etc Fricatives have a friction quality to them, they obstruct airflow (hence, obstruent) however they distort and modulate in ways that plosives do not because they allow airflow during articulation fricatives include f, v, Þ, ð (the "Hard" and "Soft" -Th sounds in english), s, z, ʃ, ʒ (i will Romanise these as "Sh-" and "Zh-" respectively) Affricates are Obstruents that begin as Plosives, but release as Fricatives, rather than releasing in a Sonorant way affricates include t͡ʃ, d͡ʒ ("ch / tsh" and "j / dzh" respectively) sorry, but i'm just a huge nerd for languages to the point that i go out of my way to study linguistics, phonology, etc so i can better understand the mechanics of language. this seems to have some overlap with your knowledge of the field of spoken word pathology, but i believe you (or your educators) made an error (unless the terminology used is just different in the fields which would make all of this pointless and confusing for no reason) but the joke is funny TL;DR: K is a plosive, not a fricative but FRICK was that a funny joke XD

@@fairyprincesslucy not a problem! tbf, a lot of the time in english, we aspirate the k (/kʰ/) or palatalize it (/kʲ/) which often produces semi-occluded articulation rather than a full obstruction, like in the word "cute", for example, we often don't pronounce it like /kju:t/, it's typically rather pronounced (depending on accent) as either /kʲyut/, /kʲuːt/, or how i pronounce it, /kʰiuːt̚/ and many more! i just don't want you to think that i thought it was some horrible mistake or that im angry or anything, i'm not trying to "umm akshyually" you here, i assume that you already know about this stuff, i just thought you'd want a reminder, since your channel is blowing up recently X'D either way, love the advice in this series! i hope you have a good day!

the advice is appreciated honestly, with the channel getting bigger I def want information to be correct. I think I mixed up fricitives and plosives in my head? I was so confident about it when I made the video hahahaha but now I know! Thanks for the explanation too! @@sarkyopinion9814

What I ended up doing was actually singing and trying to mimic a feminine voice in songs. At some point it felt like I could do it even with songs that didn't already have a feminine voice and then I thought, hey, that means progress! This happened over the course of several months though - I'm sure it would've been faster with more focused practice. I also didn't record anything for reference until months in, at which point I didn't feel like I had any change but found that already I had gained a voice that could realistically pass. I'm still not sure that I'm perfectly happy with it right now, but my voice passing is not a concern. It's weird though, watching videos like this one. I couldn't describe what exactly changed about my voice to make it go from the horrible old whatever it was to my much nicer voice now. It feels like I cheated, lol.

Hello! Im new to all this voice training as a Trans woman here, watched your past tutorials and I must say, past tutorials Ive watched, while helpful, are kinda boring... Your videos, especially with all the explosions... mostly the explosions, helped capture my ADHD ass to watch all the way through and not get bored while practicing! So thank you, looking forward to next video! Also dang it... my M word was Mario-
