When it comes to saving money and lowering your food bills, nothing beats buying in bulk. In this video I show you and amazing bulk food haul for $350 and give you ideas on how you can track food price trends and always get the best price. This was a huge grocery haul on a budget!
Contrary to popular opinion, you don't need to have a large family to stock up on bulk pantry staples. Even small families can benefit from lower prices and have a fully-stocked pantry when they split large bags of oats, rice, and beans with friends and neighbors.
Whether your goal is to learn how to not go grocery shopping as often or creating a prepper pantry, you can use my tips to become more self-sufficient and save money on food for your family.

We're only a household of two, but we still buy a lot of things in bulk like this -- beans, rice, flour, popcorn, oatmeal, etc. As long as you store it correctly and buy things you know you will eat, it can save you a LOT of money.

I just bought white rice in bulk and also bought some flour. I have brand new food grade buckets with gamma lids and also picked up oxygen absorbers. I dont want to deal with the mylar bags and sealing them and etc. so, how do you store yours? Really wanted to pour rice directly into bucket and toss in an oxygen absorber. ???
@UndertheMedian
@UndertheMedian 2 жыл бұрын
@@samanthabalmaceda221 , we would not probably be considered proper preppers. We have always stocked food for 2-3 months, not for years. So, here's how I do it. I like to have the food in smaller packages. I divide the food up into 1-gallon storage bags. Then, the bags are placed into the buckets. We don't use the oxygen absorbers. I think the oxygen absorbers are good for longer term storage.

This was quite informative. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Although this will not relate to all of your viewers, I want to make a suggestion. I am a 68 year old widow with MS. I am not looking for sympathy, but it does help explain my suggestion, because MS, or at least my type, causes me to have ups and downs as far as mobility is concerned. Going into a store is a very rare thing, but fortunately there is grocery pick up and/or delivery in my area. Unfortunately not everyone can take advantage of this service or it is not available near them. The point I am finally getting to is there are many folks around us who are not able to benefit from your helpful ideas. Due to mobility, finance, location, or other issues, they cannot take advantage of shopping around for the best values. Buying in bulk would generally end in wasted food no matter how well it is stored. Lifting those bags is not possible. You mentioned sharing cream of wheat, for example, with your sons. What about looking around your neighborhood to see if there are folks in similar situations who could “shop your pantry”. If you buy 50 lbs of rice, flour, oatmeal, for example, figure your price per pound and sell a few pounds to them. For folks who do not have discount stores in their area, many regular grocery stores sell staple items in 25 lb bags. This would also work. This suggestion is for anyone who is interested and able to carry it out. Maybe put a post in your neighborhood newsletter and see what response you get. Again this is just an idea I wanted to share.

I think it's a learning curve. I've taken a lot of baby steps in 33 years as I've learned about new strategies. I think the pandemic gave people a wake up call as far as pantries are concerned and the importance of keeping them fully stocked.

We often find Amish popcorn in our area to be inexpensive. I love to grind popcorn in my grain grinder for pop-cornbread, polenta, and whatever else I need cornmeal for. I also feel that it doesn’t have the same risk for molds that can sometimes be present in other bulk purchased dried corn for those who are sensitive to such things.

What a great haul! It sounds like a terrific place to shop! I got my vintage dresses out, too, recently...to see which I can still wear and what I can do with the fabric if others. Some I'll turn into table runners, placemats and napkins. A couple I'll use to re-cover a couple of footstools. One I'll turn into a winter slip because it'll be warm. And some will be turned into scarves. My favorite oversized tops I keep as fabric to make baby and toddler clothes for little great-nieces and nephews. I also have a lot of denim scraps and pieces I patchwork and line with fleece for baby and toddler clothes, and baby blankets for the winter. I hope to quilt even the scraps of that. My grandparents raised their children during the great depression, so my parents were small children during the great depression and teenagers during WW11. It's in my bones to make something out of nothing...I just about have to! Love to both you and Larry and thanks for sharing so much of yourselves with us. God love you and bless you! ❤

Okay, Hope, I did the math!! On July 20th I bought Aldi's Millville Old Fashioned Oats, $2.45 a 42 oz box, this comes to $0.06 per oz. The Amish Store 50 lb bag (800 oz) at $28.50 comes to $0.04 per oz! So I guess it just depends on how much storage space you have. There's just the two of us, plus I bake oatmeal cookies occasionally, so I think we'll stick with Aldi's. Love your show!!!!

Sorry Hope, but I’m with Larry on the latte. I love coffee, chocolate and peppermint but not altogether. Food has gone up a bit in England too and we have a few problems with transporting food as many truck drivers have returned to their home countries since the UK left the EU. Also the need to self isolate due to COVID is affecting the flow of groceries and produce so there are items missing from shelves in supermarkets. I’d love to see you do an episode on clothing. How you shop, deciding what to buy, etc. I did see the one with Larry’s shoe problems. :-)

I love your hauls, and here was a really long one! 😊 I buy groceries once a month, and only go back for fresh produce when nessecary, and was just making my list for the month, so this was inspiring. I will try this split green pea soup in the next week. I have to go with Larry regarding the coffee - peppermint flavour in a drink is a bit to much for my taste. 😁

Thanks for voting. I'm going to tally votes in just a bit and we'll announce the "winner" on Monday's program. I love that. you shop once a month. Right now with our farmers markets in full swing, I must admit to once a week shopping. But, we pick up our weekly CSA share box from the farmers market, so I'm there anyway. And I do two hours of work each week for our farmer and he pays me in produce. So, I get to pick out extras for my pay. It's a great arrangement.

Oh Peppermint Mocha is the best! The grits, I am so hungry and miss those for sure. A great price on tortillas. They sell that tomato canned here in the Central America. They are good. I use them to make chili. The apricots I would make a roll up pastry. And a Tip: be careful when you buy products. In order to keep the prices low, companies are packaging products in smaller containers so there is not the same amount there that you usually get. Example was a cleaner I use in the bathroom. It went from 650ml to 500 ml and were still charging the same price for that product. Wish I could find castile liquid soap here. Anyway, thanks Hope for all your hard work for us. We are growing vegetables in pots on our patio this year. We eat a little but most of it goes into the freezer in meals.

I have a few items I knew the prices of very well at our local Safeway. The milk, the tortilla chips, and the bananas have stayed pretty level, plus they almost always have a coupon on one brand or another. On my way home this evening, I was able to get 2 gallons of milk and a big bag of tortilla chips for $4.89, using my "just for u" digital coupons. The milk was $1.69/gal with digital coupon, limit 2. For that price, I wish they could go back to their old limit of 4. I can't vote on the lattes - what I would buy would depend on my mood. I like both. At our local Safeway (per the website just now), an 80-count of white corn tortillas is $4.49, which is roughly $0.62 per dozen.

Hi Hope - really learning a great deal! I wonder if you would consider doing a video on your tips for those who needs prescription glasses. Some lenses can be very pricey and are not suitable for online companies. How do you and Larry handle this situation? Also as a plus size person - thrift and second hand stores are often not very helpful. Any tips for us? Thanks for great content!

Oh, sweet potato chips are really good. Every once in a while we find the Kroger brand of sweet potato chips for about $1 a bag. When we do, we get 2 or 3 bags of them.

The Amish in MO do not have phones so you can't call ahead for prices. The closest Amish store is 1 hr 15 min away. They don't have salvage items either. The nearby salvage store is same price ( sometimes more) than Walmart. You are very fortunate to have the places you shop

Rodents hate the smell of peppermint. So, if you have a problem with mice/rats, just sprinkle some cloths with peppermint, and stuff around where rodents are getting in. Reapply the peppermint as needed. Peppermint is non-toxic to pets/animals/children (people).
@UndertheMedian

A lot of our viewers from India have also suggested dried bay leaves. Apparently they are very effective at keeping away rodents and bugs.
@starwish2467

@@UndertheMedian yes, bay leaves may work (mostly for insects, as I hear). But, peppermint smells better if you have to live with it for a while.
@UndertheMedian

@@starwish2467, that is absolutely a valid point. Spiders won't cross peppermint, either. I have used it for that, too.

I just found your channel and it’s wonderful! I’ve already been doing some of your tips and it’s working! I did some price comparisons with our Costco business centre and some products are half the price when you do the math! I’ve been vegan for 13 years and cook mostly vegan for my family so I love your food videos! Could you do a video on how to host a party while being frugal. Thanks!

Shopping around, calculating cost to get price comparisons, and bulk shopping is great. Every year I stock up on Toilet Paper (not a 2020 thing, just a habit, but it sure was good that I had stocked up before that world event happened...It even helped an elderly neighbor out for a month lol). I calculate price per sheet because the one that I get (Cashmere Soft & Pure by Kruger has 450 sheets/roll or 32400 sheets ). Although the cost has increased a bit, it only cost me $35 cnd or $27.96 U.S or 1 cent a sheet for 72 quad rolls a years supply for 2 people. The only thing comparable was the Kirkland brand ( 30528 sheets)that would have cost $50.40 Cnd. Saving me about $14.44 cnd or $11.14 u.s. a year. I like the way you two think

Great haul. I could never find such prices here and we don't have salvage option for shopping. For the pureed apricots, I would simply top it and service it with whipped cream as a dessert. I guess vegans would use coconut cream instead of cow cream. I would also put it in upside down or crumble type cakes. Yum. Someone mentioned putting it into grits so you could put it into various types of porridge.
