I've had most of these mid-small filters over the years, and yes, this one is 100% the best of them all. One major thing I think you overlooked in this review is the built in skimmer. It sucks in water from below the surface on the side, and the intake on the front is a skimmer. That's a massive thing to consider, especially if you grow floating plants. I made an airline tubing shield around it with 2 suction cups to save my floaters. Congrats to whoever won this!

Have to comment on the Tidal. You know I’ve kept fish for a while, 58 years this Christmas. I’ve seen them all tried them all and for long periods of time. I loved aquaclear and used them exclusively for years. After they soldout a couple years ago I noticed new ones were: cheap easy to break plastic, the motors were cheap loud and break often. Tidal was suggested to me so I tried a few for a year. In the interim five new aquaclears died. Five. What I love about Tidal. Self priming quality motors. AC often do not restart and I’d find tanks in distress after a power blink. Solid construction and materials. The little pop up does work and is a great reminder. I add 2 or more additional filter pads to increase surface area and BB. The 35 is the only one without the extension bar. All the larger sizes do. Finally, I started salt tanks about a year ago. Tidals all have built in skimmers. This keeps the surface clean in salt and fresh water tanks. Hands down a huge improvement in filtration. They’re all I use now, and you can’t hear them!

Got to be one of the subscribers who says "I told you so" when it comes to the Tidal filters, lol! I have a Tidal 75 and Tidal 110 and am really impressed with them. You made a lot of comments about not having an extension tube that draws water from lower depths of the tank. I have no idea why Seachem chose not to have one on the Tidal 35, but the other 3 Tidal models all come with an extension tube, AND a separate control dial that "adjusts the amount of flow intake from the surface vs. the telescoping intake." so it is quite useful. Another feature you overlooked, is that when you turn the "filter cover" over, it holds the filter media basket, so you can carry it to a cleaning area without dripping/spilling water on the way. These are very good HOBs!

@George Clark Usually, mine are very quiet. When the impeller is loud, it is usually caused by something like a piece of gravel or charcoal getting in there. I would clean it out very good and make sure nothing obvious is causing the noise. If you can't find anything, take it back and get a new one.

My 2 cents on the lack of an extension tube: You mentioned that the intake is on the side, not the bottom. What immediately popped in my head is that the water flow then becomes horizontal and not vertical - instead of circulating from top to bottom, it now flows in a circle around the tank, like swirling the water in a bathtub. It seems to me that this might actually work better to get all of the water in the tank moving... I don't know - I am not the right kind of engineer, but that seems at least possible to me.

I agree it looks very good especially for a beginner or actually anyone. I am a dedicated Aquaclear user and enjoy the interchangeable parts and replacement parts available. But the one thing missing with that unit is the availability to attach a sponge at the intake easily to keep out shrimp and small stock. This sponge is also important to keep the filter clean much longer between cleanings! Still if I had it I would use it and surely find a way. They will probably add some way in the future. Good fair review.

I won an Aquaclear in a raffle but went out and bought this retail from a LFS (quite a bit more expensive than mail order). I too, was confused that it did not have a pickup tube but notices it has a surface intake on the front of the box and one on the side a bit lower. I didn't figure out how to stuff the flat cord into the recessed channel. Just started up an old 38g GF tank (no heater) and took out the UGF. Will be a planted tank so heater and this filter.

I've been thinking about getting one of these filters. That little pop up thing is the only reason why I haven't. The vids I've watched has these filters using that overflow way to soon on the high flow setting. In other words, using the filter on high flow, as soon as the filter starts to get a little dirty it will start overflowing. What I mean by to soon, from what I've seen on KZbin is just a couple days of running you have to clean the thing. Who wants to do that? But, all in all I do agree this is a great design!

Thanks for the review. I just went and bought one after seeing this review. The advantages of 1) quiet - will be moving a tank to my bedroom 2) black color blends in with tank rim 3) flow appears way more horizontal (from design) than typical (at max and min flow). I want tank circulation that goes around the tank - top/bottoms or 4 sides. 4) Seachem Matrix is good stuff (I use it in my canister filter and after testing water parameters for over 2 years on that tank and having used Matrix for the last 6 months - it does help with nitrates). 5) Adjustable flow - less important to me, will most likely always have it on max flow 6) Self priming - not a big deal, but an inherent consequence of making it quiet. 7) Is it possible that the pump impeller is way less likely to clog this way - needing to be cleaned? If so, awesome sauce. The bottom line is its not much more expensive than most of the many respected alternatives. There are some super cheapies out there, but once you move out of that range, this is just a little bit more. Cost is a super important factor, but considering you get permanent media instead of worthless cartridges (unless money isn't important to you) this works out quite well. Also, everyone wants to say their pump is quiet. That's like saying an apartment isn't noisy. Putting the pump in the water, and not having some tube to make it harder to catch fish seems like a win-win on many levels.

Mine never could re-start on their own and the lid would vibrate requiring a quick tap to silence it. I like how this basket is completely enclosed so you can just pull it out and it's all contained vs the aquaclear's grey basket that only grabs the side. my ceramic media is not in a bag so when I pull out the aquaclears they fall out or in the tank. Have been running a Tidal 55 on my 29g tank for months, and love it. Water's always crystal clear. It's quiet, and love love love that it doesn't need to be primed. We lose power in our building randomly, so I like that I don't have to worry about it starting up again. My Tidal 55 and the larger versions do have the extension tube. I use the sponge, a bit of floss, Purigen, and the Matrix. The blue pop-up thing does work. Only happened a few times when I 1st set up the tank. that was just due to debris from the new substrate, and a plant that died back and clogged it up. I norm do maintenance on it long before it would pop up.

I have had this filter in my 20L sitting in the middle of the tank for 2 weeks now. I cut a piece of filter floss to fit over the blue bottom course sponge, then I put the marix carbon bag for this fiter (also in zippered reusable bag) and the matrix bio on top. The water in this tank is absolutely crystal clear. The flow adjustment is great and the only thing you hear is water movement and the bubbles from the air stone. Also the top lid when you turn it upside down has two pegs that your media basket fits onto and acts as a water catch (it's in the instructions)! The filter is more expensive than others but I am very happy with the performance and simplicity. Looks good in the tank without the down tube.

Are you still using the tidal 35 on your 20 gallon long? I would have to put the filter on one of the ends of my 20 long since I do not have wall clearance for a HOB, and I’m trying to decide between the 35 or the 55 (with the flow rate turned down, but for the extension tube). I’m planning on pea puffers and they’re messy eaters so hoping to get good filtration at the bottom of the tank too. Not sure if the 35 would provide this from end to end (since I can’t place it in the back middle like you) without the extension tube? Thank you for your input!

I have been using these filters for roughly two years. I bought them to replace the Aqua-Tec “Wal-Mart” filters ( which are made by made by Marineland) . 1) In my opinion these are really only good to be used as filters for small quarantine tanks or tanks with a few smaller cichlids. I say this because there is no way to incorporate a prefilter to this filter for it lacks a intake tube and it draws water from multiple locations at and below the waters surface. 2) the baskets are a weird shape, doesn’t have the retaining device the larger Seachem filters have and it clogs very quickly. Plus the amount of media provided ( Seachem Matrix which is just white pumice) won’t house enough beneficial bacteria to make any difference in any situation. “So where does that leave us”- what I done was A) I took a small amount of bio-rings and put them in the bottom of the basket to create a dwelling area for the water to sort out and heavy muck/detritus. B) I used the coarse foam it came with as a template to make cutouts from “ reticulated filter foam “ from Pentair.com parts number #PF7 or from Petco brand Imagitarium replacement filter sponges ( SKU 2441408 ) which also work great in the AquaClear filters and as prefilters for Marineland filters if you cut a slot in the middle of the sponge and don’t exceed more this 1/2-2/3 down the middle of the sponge. This is really all that can be done with these filters. They are really just hang on the back sponge mechanical sponge filters that you may be able to get some beneficial bacteria action from. But as I noted earlier they are great for quarantine tanks or tanks with a few small cichlids. I hope this info helps someone. Thank you for the information you put out through your videos. Your efforts are appreciated in this hobby.

My last tank was 35 years ago. I dont remember the brand of the filter, But the intake was strictly siphon. The impeller did not intake, but it pushed the water out. So id have to submerge the candy cane shaped intake completely to fill, put my thumb over the shorter outlet, raise just that part out of the water and submerge that end into the hob filter box. It kept the siphon unless tank level went too low. So if there was a power outage, it would still be primed on the basis water finds its own level. I even would put two intake tubes to increase filter flow when i went from 29 to 55. Just a flashback.

I agree, these are amazing filters. I have an upgrade idea that would be a game changer. The intake/impeller is already inside the tank. Let's flip a switch and the water stops going to the filter, but is instead re routed to my water change bucket? Just extend the intake tube so I can do a 50% change.

I have 3 of these and I LOVED them at first and the fact there is not a long hanging down intake... but then I really had an opportunity to give it a try and hate the fact that there is not a longer intake.

Upon reading the description on of this filter on Amazon....it has a telescoping tube. Someone commented it looks like a hang on skimmer....it has that feature and many others. John read those instructions or Amazon's discribitions in the future for better conveying the features of these filters. I'm sold on this one....I own the Penguin 350 and the Aquaclear love them both. I will be purchasing this Tidal for a new tank I plan to set up next year 😘

I purchased the seachem tidal 35 for my 33 long aquarium. Had it on for a few days and the water remained cloudy. The included filter sponge media for mechanical filtration was very course, large pores. So I figured if I added some filter floss to aid the built in sponge that it could help clear out the water. It didnt. I added my cheap top fin filter from petsmart with the same specifications and same filter media and the water started clearing in hours. There is another guy on youtube who made a review and had the same issue and ran through the same process as me with the same results. With that aside though I like everything else about the filter. The adjustment is very good, the internal motor is awesome and convenient, the tray is super convenient but the water cloudiness is kind of a big deal.

I have the Tidal 55 on a 20g long. Just as quiet as the the first day...over 1 1/2 years ago. The self prime is a winner! The larger sizes have the extension tubes, a protein skimmer and a clip to snap a heater in. While a tad more costly than most, it's well worth it. Nice review!

I love this filter - and no, there is no extension tube, but it works quite well without it. I’ve been using mine for about 4 months with no problem. If you read the instructions first it helps! There ARE instructions on how to secure the wire! 😁 it’s extremely quiet, you can control the flow, and the best part is, there’s a little blue nob on the right side that pops up when the filter needs to be cleaned. What more could you ask for?!

Hi John, that particular filter is the only Tidal filter that doesn’t have an intake tube. All of the other sizes have an intake tube. I have 2 Tidal 110s with Cory’s intake sponges that fit them perfectly. The filter also comes with a full 5 year warranty. The Seachem Matrix does not wear out, so you don’t have to change it, but you could add more Matrix to the bag or add a second bag. I have been using mine for 2 years now and I have not had any problems. Thanks very much for sharing 👍.

The Tidal 55, 75 & 110 has telescoping extension :) Lid turned over doubles as a tray to carry basket to sink to clean. Filter starts up immediately after a power blip/outage. No other HOB does that consistently.

So, I bought 2 Seachem Tidal 55's for my 125 gallon tank, largely based on your video! :-) But I only wanted to replace one of my Aquaclear 70s at a time (I had 2 for the tank, one on each side) to help with my BB. But it didn't fit the tank!!!!! The hang on part is too narrow for the frame. I don't know if the Tidal 110 is wider, and that would have been a cheaper way to do it, but I have always filtered it like TWO 55 gallon tanks for obvious reasons. Like if one fails, and one on each side just seems like it would be more efficient. My husband (who is somewhat mechanically inclined and has lots of power tools, LOL!!!) suggested cutting the plastic frame to accommodate the filter. I let him, and I'm praying to the fish gods that it did not interfere with the integrity of the strength of the tank. It fits now, and it's running, (I am also impressed with the motor IN THE WATER feature; SO QUIET and I love the self priming!!!!) but I sure wish they had made it wider. It has that leveling piece, so you can always make it fit a narrower frame, but you can't make it fit a wider frame. We'll see how it goes. This is literally the only thing I find "wrong" with this filter, and it doesn't really feel right to complain about that since I'm running 2 smaller filters instead of the 110 that is actually recommended for a 125 gallon tank.

I have a tidal 75. It is on a 35 gallon hex tank. Love it it has an extension. The 75 can be adjusted to upper or lower intake. Definitely would go with the 75 over the 35. I originally posted this review as a 110. I checked was actually a tidal 75. I still am very happy with it . *edited I first said it was the 55. I've had it over a year checked it out it's the 110! Haven't had any issues with it

I've been using one (in combination with an aquaclear) on a planted 20 and a second on a planted 10 gallon. I love them - especially the skimmer function, and its self priming feature. I wondered about the intake tube also, but because it is a powerful flow on small tanks, the debris is well circulated and removed by the filter. I had a large model for a 55 gallon tank. That one does have an extended intake tube. I will say though, perhaps something I have done wrong, mine didn't stay quite that quiet. The little filter change indicator works, but like you mentioned I most frequently service it before it ever indicates it needs changed. This filter over all has proven awesome. Works so well!!! I like the ease of HOB maintenance, and this is is the best in my opinion. I do usually empty the filter water and don't just pull out the basket only. Debris seems to collect inside the filter, outside of the basket. Only issues: I don't like how the power chord runs across and up and doesn't stay in the track, and I wish there were more of a graduated flow decrease/increase. It kind of goes from fast flow to no flow. But everything else - Soo good. I've been using this model for over a year, and I had my larger model for at least a year and a half.

Self priming Sicce motors can’t be beat. During a power outage you’ll appreciate it when the power comes back on. And I’ve used all of the filters John is testing. The Tidal 55 has a heater holder and built in skimmer. Lid acts as a basket holder during maintenance too. Awesome filter.

You forgot it has skimmer built in it. Also i am using Tidal 75 it has 3 inputs, one thru tube, other in middle and one top which works as skimmer, you can control water intake from where you want more input( Skimmer, middle or bottom). I am in love with Tidal Filter design.

Hi John, I got one of those last year. I didn't care for it as much as I like the Aqueon hobs. Mine does have an extension tube. The thing I did like was the easier ability to customize the tray for the media I run. The lord also functions as a tray to take the basket to the sink.
