Minute 5:40 That is the right attitude: never be afraid of making mistakes when speaking in Spanish, as Spaniards appreciate the effort you put into it.

I can relate sooo much to persons responding to me in English when I speak Spanish sometimes and I’m like whyy I wanna practice haha but it doesn’t always happen.

Don’t worry for your pronunciation in Spanish, it’s perfect. English speaking people usually have a very strong accent but you don’t. Good luck here, I’m sure you’ ll enjoy it here since you have a very nice and humble actitude.

Regarding the Germans ability to speak English, if you search for English Proficiency Index you'll find that the Germanic countries have a very high proficiency in English compared to the Latin countries of Europe, which have a moderate degree of proficiency. In fact, Austria is ranked third after the Netherlands and Singapore. I was in Germany in the 80s, Austria in the early 90s and again in Germany in 2013 and I didn't notice them switching automatically to English. I'm guessing with the availability of English language media now through the internet their level of English has gone through the roof and they're responding in English because it's the simplest way to communicate. I haven't been there in 11 years so I'm curious to know whether they're going to respond to me in English as well.

I figured it has something to do with proficiency. Though to be fair, even in very basic exchanges, I haven't found any Spanish speakers switch to English yet despite likely knowing the vocabulary for the interaction
