About San Ginés. Among some of us middle-aged Madrid people it was usual some twenty years ago to start the year rightly and go for a _chocolate con churros_ to San Ginés after a party night on new year's eve. Then went to bed and thus the new year was officially (and properly) inaugurated
@MaxandSidney Жыл бұрын
What an awesome tradition!! Perfect way to start every year!

You actually "eat" the rest of the chocolate with your spoon, you do not drink it. A glass of cold water afterwards is recommended. I would say liquid chocolate, the way it started being consumed in Spain when it was first brought to Europe from America, is equally as popular as solid chocolate.
@MaxandSidney2 жыл бұрын
Really? We had no idea you finish with the spoon, we have to try that now! The liquid chocolate is so delicious!

Yes, you drink it or use the spoon. A glass of cold water afterwards is nice and somewhat typical.

In fact the proper way to serve a _chocolate a la taza_ (no matter if accompained with either _tejeringos, melindros, fartons_ or just plain bread) is serving also a glass of cold water. Or it was in the good old days, at least.

The croqueta does not contain cheese, it´s bechamel. Regarding the ibérico ham, it´s produced in 2 places: Huelva (south of Spain), and Guijuelo (Salamanca). For your next visit, a must food typical from Madrid: boquerones en vinagre, callos, cocido and calamares a la romana ;) Tks for sharing your experience ;)
@MaxandSidney Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! We learned about the bechamel too late for the video 😆 we added all of your suggestions to our list for Madrid for next time! We can’t wait to come back, so much to see and to eat!!

I could't agree less. Mercado de S. Miguel is expensive, I admit it, but the quality of their food is top notch and the scenary, stunning. Those things are not cheap so, when visiting Madrid, it's a must even if it is not sustainable on a regular basis.

Iberic pigs are raised in many places, the ham may come from different places. Iberic pic is a race itself, with brown skin and black ongles. Igs a different type of meat, that makes the difference

This was such a great video! It brought back memories from my first backpacking trip in Europe. I landed in Madrid on that first trip. One thing I ate a lot while in Madrid were the inexpensive, but delicious bocadillos de lomo! Did you try that? If you didn't, they're super delicious!

As a local I would say to avoid 100 Montaditos. Fake non-traditional at all chain, you even have to work as a waiter like in a burguer-king. You get much better tapas and service in most bars ( ask some local or your host or hotel ). Also is not local economy so won't help much to the people who lives around. Mercado de San Miguel is cute and fancy and posh but it is way overpriced for tourists ( like La Boquería in Barcelona ) you could go to any other hood market and go straight to the bar for local food, like in Lavapiés.
@MaxandSidney Жыл бұрын
Oh yes, it’s definitely not the nicest or most traditional place 😅 but those prices are hard to beat for budget travelers! The food scene in Madrid is spectacular though, so many amazing options!
@rupert-j8f3 ай бұрын
i dont mind 100 montaditos. it is what it is, a inexpensive way to get quite a lot of food (maybe not the best quality) reasonably cheap. a bit like el tigre (havent been there yet but im going to try finding it when i go to madrid in november). i was surprized how expensive and how busy mercado de san miguel was, like a cattle market and stupid prices for even the most basic of foods.

The ham croquetas contain no cheese at all. The creamy interior is a béchamel sauce, basically milk, onion, butter, flour and nutmeg.

@MaxandSidney Жыл бұрын
You will be mostly fine with English! We did brush up on a little Spanish just in case, and we occasionally used some common phrases. But it’s a very international city and lots of people speak fluent English. Have an amazing time in March, we love that city!! 👍

Those who do not have a gastronomic culture in the country where they usually live should not make a video of the top gastronomic dishes in a country like Spain. Spain has an immense gastronomic culture. It depends on the geographical area and we all know what exists in each area. Together with France, we are the country with the most gastronomic diversification that exists. You would have to be here a whole month to know him.
