You rate Peak Daniel higher than Peak Yuki. But the things is, Daniel has peaked and is now on a slow decline. Yuki meanwhile hasn't even reach the threshold of his peak and is showing signs of improving over the years. Yes, what happened in Bahrain was a bit immature, but you can say that to Seb as well in Baku after deliberately side ramming Lewis, and Seb was a multiple world champion. I just find that people is overly underrating Yuki as an F1 driver because he has less social media presence than his teammates.

Theres no way in hell it's a "slow" decline whatsoever. But yea his peak was maybe 10 years ago and just like that it's gone. It happens all the time in all pro sports, the "failed wonderkid" archetype: early peak at very high level, then it just goes away for no reason. In f1 you can mask it behind "Bad car" excuses in order to milk the cash cow a little bit more but thats only works for a limited time.

@@alvmusic4402 So true. There will be guys like Alonso who don't seem to age, whilst there are others who plateau off a cliff after just a few years of peak performance. You can also the same about drivers progressing, you have somebody like Yuki who had one of the worst starts to their F1 career and he was super lucky to be able to keep his seat, but he was able to use his time to quickly develop and now all of a sudden is being rate as a solid driver, and given his young age, reasonable to expect he can improve even a bit further.

Ya Checo is way better I'm biased because he's my favorite driver currently but Checko has proven himself as a very competent driver at racing point and does a great job as the 2 driver for Red Bull I think it's absolutely ridiculous there was ever any thought of replacing Checko for a way past his prime Ricardo they're not in the same league anymore not even close. The only driver I would be alright with Red Bull possibly replacing Checko with is Sainz because I truly think he's probably the 2nd or 3rd best driver at this point certainly better than an aging Lewis Hamilton and would make Red Bull even more dominant than it alrighty is which is a scary thought

For me, the biggest problem is that when you compare the races that both Yuki and DR raced in (since 2023), Yuki has had 5 point finishes (Belgium, US, Brazil, Abu Dhabi, Australia), vs. Daniel's one (Mexico). Yes Daniel has had his fair share of bad luck, but you could say the same for Yuki (starting back of the grid due to PU change, terrible strategy in Bahrain and illegal overtake by Magnussen in Saudi). Yuki has been much more consistent in making himself relevant in the races.

you mention daniels bad luck in sort of a passing way, but he's been absolutely crippled by it in his races so far, its almost ridiculous how little has been said of it. He's had 2-3 races that have been uncompromised in his last season...and in one of those, he went nuts. 1. In hungary he was absolutely punted from behind by zhou, went to last and came back to finish in p13 after an amazing long stint on softs. 2. Spa, daniel and yuki had identical results that were mirrored in the sprint and the races, daniel had another unlucky track limits for race quali. I mean it was so identical they even benefitted from the same amount of dnf's in their races. 3. Zandvoort - obviously he broke his hand 4. Austin, running yuki's setup and had a MASSIVE piece of debris in his front left corner which killed his race, before that debris he actually caught up to yuki in the first stint. Yuki's points finish here was really a result of DSQ's farther up and not on track stuff. 5. Mexico, finally, an uncompromised weekend, and he did bit's qualifying p4 without a tow, p7 in the race and was fighting a merc on the last lap 6. Brazil - hit by a flying tyre lap one, placed a lap down by the stewards and was lapping third fastest overall behind the lead pack on race pace, would've beat yuki if not classified a lap down 7. Vegas - uncompromised weekend, car was slow here because of the same reasons it was fast in mexico he drove an okay race, yuki dnf'd 8. Abu Dhabi - tear off in brake duct, had to pit on lap 6? or something absurd like that, put him out of sync but he did well to recover to the edges of the points so sure, you can say daniel had his 'fair share of bad luck' but to think you could say the absolute same for yuki is a bit absurd. Yuki has had two significant point finishes that have become huge talking points that are more a result of dnf's and dsq's than they are a result of on track moves and positions...so for people to be able to make a comprehensive decision on daniel this early into the season, given his absolutely horrendous luck so far i think is a little absurd. Theres no denying yuki has been just that little faster this year so far, but to brush daniels 'bad luck' as something that isnt a significant dampener on some performances that he had that would have changed the perception of his head to head is a little unfair in my opinion.

So, if you want to go race by race, and focus on whether Daniel had a chance to score points or not: Hungary - Stroll (who finished P10) had MUCH better pace than Danny so it was unlikely he would have scored points. Spa - Track limits = drivers fault. It has nothing to do with "luck". Zandvoort - I did not count that race, I only compared races where both Yuki and Daniel raced in. Austin - Given where Yuki finished, he could have scored points if not for the debris. Brazil - Yes he could have scored if it weren't for the tyre. Vegas - Car had absolutely no pace. Abu Dhabi - Daniel started P15, was unlikely he would have scored in the points. So essentially there were two potential race, Austin and Brazil, where Daniel could have realistically scored points. But then if you do the same exercise for Yuki, you can argue that he could have definitely scored points in Mexico if it weren't for the PU penalty, really bad strategy in Bahrain, and Magnussen's illegal overtake in Saudi so maybe he could have scored a point in either of the races. So that's potentially 2-3 race. This is why I say, when you just focus on whether the two drivers could have scored points, Yuki and Daniel are actual on par when it comes to "unluckiness". Either way, its a lot of ifs and buts, and reality is Yuki has had a clearer upper hand when it come to having point finishes which is their ultimate goal.

@@TommoOnKZbin Exactly, and a good reminder of how important qualifying is, especially for those in the back marker teams. In the race, there is much less a driver can do as ultimately cars will regress to where the car's performance is, and whilst drivers may be able to defend against faster cars to a certain extent, overtaking a faster car is near impossible. For me it is no surprise that Alex and Yuki were the highest point finishers out of the bottom 4 teams, because of their ability to qualify high and use their position to defend their position to death.

It is unfair to compare "peak Ricciardo" to "peak Tsunoda" bc 1) we dont know if Yuki has peaked and 2) "peak Ricciardo" drove a different regulation car that's smaller and more nimble than current regulation, so who is to say Yuki would not out perform Ricciardo in that car? You can’t realistically rate Yuki against the likes of a top driver like Russell until Yuki hopefully moves to a better team in the future. This is missing the point. Ric is an experienced driver who was brought in to prove he still has the skills to drive the Red Bull. He was supposed to decisively beat Tsunoda- it doesn’t matter if everyone thinks he’s getting destroyed but is actually only losing by a little. He needs to be winning by a lot. If he can’t beat Tsunoda, give him the boot. That team should be for young drivers to develop, not older drivers with good PR to make futile attempts at recapturing old glory.

A deleted lap with ric using several meters outside the track limits is a big driver error and should definetly be accounted for more than this video says imo. He even missed q2 for it so should imo be accounted for and count more in yukis favor. Good video and interesting topic

How so? Going a dew metrrs outside the track limit is alrrady a sign that he pushed the car over his ability to control it thus making error. So the time he made with that error was not valid. If he drove within the limit, the time woyld be even slower.

Tommo included it more for the purpose of having an additional data point to compare their raw pace, but it was clearly his mistake and a very costly one as all he had to do was keep it within track limits and he should have at least progressed to Q2. Yuki is by far one one the most underrated drivers on the grid. He must have a seat for 2025 regardless of being backed by Honda. He is somehow turning out to be a second coming of his former teammate Pierre Gasly who become one of the best midfield drivers out there. Outqualifying a multiple race winner is already a feat. Considering how Danny Ric has already been in the grid for quite sometime already. In China, I am already expecting Yuki to be outpaced by Danny due to lack of familiarity on the track. But if Yuki turned the way around, RB might just sacked Ricciardo for Lawson.

I feel like Tommo is allowing his affinity for Riccardo to cloud his judgement. The data was interesting, and consistently favours Yuki but it felt like he kept making excuses for why Yuki did better. Ignoring the farce of a team order in Bahrain. Yuki has beaten Riccardo consistently since joining the team. Riccardo needed this stint with RB to show off that he is still a great driver, and he just isnt doing that. In fact hes looking worse than ever. Just because he was one of the best on the grid doesn't mean he is anymore, and it doesnt mean he will be again. His stint at McLaren was dire and he failed to perform in 2 sets of regulations with that team. Now hes occupying a seat in a development team and being convincingly beaten by someone 10 years younger, its time for him to make way for the next generation.

I dunno, I think I've been fair on this. I literally say I felt Danny has only outperformed Yuki 2/10 weekends. I present the numbers that put Yuki consistently quicker. They do all the talking. In the first 6 of the 10 quali laps we have, there's literally less than a tenth between them. You've gotta acknowledge the good with the bad.

Not only that, but the Australia pace is only closer because Ricc was so far behind, he didnt have dirty air and nobody race. Defending does slow you down and also degrades your tires quicker, so Ricc was just given a free drive in most of Australia.

But chalk it up to him being confused about the car. Okay fine, but how long can that be an excuse for him? If it was a different team with different drivers and 80% of the time driver A was ~2 tenths faster in quali AND in race pace. When it comes to getting into a better team its unlikely Driver B would be considered an option. But because its Danny Ric its different? It's a fair statement that peak Riccardo is better than peak Yuki. But it has been a LOOOONG time since we have seen peak Riccardo, and I fail to see evidence that we will see it again.

​@@canton-7174 So the first fact is that Yuki has consistently outpaced Danny by 0.1 - 0.2 seconds give or take. Whether you think thats big or small is up to interpretation though as Tommo acknowledged, this 0.1 - 0.2 seconds gap could be difference between dropping out of Q1 or making it to Q3, so I personally think it is a big deal especially when this gap is so consistent. Then there is a different problem of expectations. The narrative was that Danny, an extremely experienced driver who apparently showed great pace in the Silverstone tyre test, was making a return as a potential raplcement for Checo. So, people naturally were expecting Danny to at the very minimum beat Yuki convincingly. Compared to that expectation, Daniel has MASSIVELY underperformed. Lastly, there always seems to be some kind of excuse for Daniel's performance, be it "oh he is coming from a break so he needs time" "he just broke his hand so he needs time to fully recover" "he needs time to adjust to the new car" "the car doesn't suit his driving style" "he got unlucky during the races" etc. The excuses go on and on. And whilst there could be some level of truth to some of the statements, at some point you can't continue to just keep on coming up with excuses for him.

He just needs to pull the plug, Daniel will be loved either way. Not many drivers get the privilege of having a million overtake compilations made about them. DC had a similar career path end to that of DR, and he took it as “wow i’m actually not good anymore i should probably quit”, Daniel just needs to accept his performance cliff like Coulthard did. DR can race damn near anywhere he pleases after this unless he takes the Pundit route which he’d be terrific at.

Marko always had a soft spot for young drivers with raw speed. For evidence, remember Max's "crashtappen" era in first half 2018. Max managed to mature up after summer break, being a consistent top 3 in form alongside Hamilton and Raikkonem during that time period, leading to a driver we know today. Ricciardo on the other hand is on Horner's side. There was a rumour last year that Horner wanted to get rid Marko, Yuki, and Honda, consolidating the power for himself in wake of Mateschitz's passing and Marko's de Vries failure. So, Horner's support for Ricciardo and Marko backing up Yuki in a way is an extension of Horner/Marko power struggle. With Horner still being in Red Bull, they are not looking Yuki in high regard no matter what.

Consider that ~a tenth is where Logan was compared to Albon in the first couple quali sessions, and people still call him a joke that should lose his seat/justify what Williams did... So yeah, maybe the gap isn't that big, but people are incredibly biased in when they think a tenth is a lot or a little... The arguments on this note, are also pretty bad in terms of any sort of way that could look "not that bad" on Daniel, but be a death notice on Logan. Logan has more potential, requires less pay, has many more years in him, is the younger, less experienced driver, and is brand new to F1 with no sign that he will get slower rather than improve. Ricciardo is proven, yes, but there's no reason to assume he will get faster over time, as he's already past his "prime" - and it's been like 5 years since he's had a "Good season" at this point. He's also shown how fast and how hard he can crumble to dust. Seriously, imagine being so bad at something that your employer PAYS YOU ~$14M TO LEAVE??? "He just needs 10 races/1 season/a couple seasons to get to grips with the car" - Did Gasly get that? Did Albon *really* get that? Did DeVries get that? Hell no. Let's be honest, Nyck was out the second that RB realized Daniel was available. Daniel is being treated like a rookie, that just needs to get up to speed and learn the ropes, or given excuses of cars/regs not fitting him... BUT HE ISN'T THE ONLY ONE. If half the grid could say similar things, but you are still dunking on them, Ricciardo should not be an exception. If he takes a couple seasons to get up to speed at RB, then moves to the main team, takes a couple years there... He'd be 38-40 by the time he was in the top seat and "fitting with the team" or car. So I think that any good graces given to Danny Ric HAVE TO BE EXTENDED TO OTHER DRIVERS LIKE ZHOU, LOGAN, ETC. I get that we all want him to succeed, but other drivers are having similar, or even less struggle, and deemed worse and less worthy of a seat... for the sin of not being a known quantity and media darling.

Great analysis! I feel like when I look at the quali times, it seems Yuki gets faster every Qualifying, while Daniel stays at about the same lap times in Q1 and Q2. It seems like Yuki bags a tenth or two in Q1, which makes the average a bit slower. So I think the gap is probably a bit bigger in qualifying between Yuki and Daniel

Fully agree, I think one thing that great drivers do is build up throughout qualifying. Max is prime example, where he always seems to find a bit more pace everytime he needs it. Yuki seems to have a good feel for how far he needs to push to move on to the next stage.

You were suggesting leaving some laps of Dan's out where he was 0.5 seconds slower towards the end of his stints because his tyres are done, and so the gap between him and Yuki is more like 0.1 per lap instead of 0.17. However hasn't he gained time in the first part of his stint by using more tyre life than he should? Therefore if you count the first part of the stint where Dan gained benefits, you have to count the later part too, even when his tyres are starting to drop off the cliff, as that is just poor stint management from Dan. All laps in clear air should count basically.

Great Video @tommo. Its challenging to compare as they were on different tires at different phases. You could also try causal inference techniques to get more comparable laps( and other factors) so that you can get a good estimate of the true difference

Just a correction for Bahrain. RIC started on a used soft so that he had a new soft available for the last stint. Yuki obviously started on a new soft which was why, according to AlphaTauri, they weren't able to do the same strategy on Yuki's car.

That deleted lap in AUS... If you follow the line he takes out of T5/6 where DR cross track limits, its impossible to say if he went faster or slower vs staying in limits. Yes he carries more speed, but it ruins the line out of the corner, he goes over the curb which breaks traction and he taps off harder in an attempt to stay in. So he may have lost time on that lap

I think your Maths are a bit off, or there were some additions because at the bottom of each race analysis you have one race (Bahrain )-0.450 and -0.160 equals 0.305 difference but it should be -0.610 difference for Yuki and the other races the same. So unless that "Average" includes the none related laps it doesn't add up. If its the overall difference then I'm not sure it should be included in the breakdown screen cause it alludes to there being a smaller gap. Just my thoughts.

As a D. Ric fan, your analysis appears to be pretty spot-on. Right now, the idea of him being promoted to Red Bull is on hold, and Daniel is now fighting to stay in F1. But that could change either way over the next three or four races. People in F1 have relatively short memory, and "current form" only goes back two or three races. I'm sorry to say Tommo, I feel what you're saying at the end there, that it's a shame to lose Daniel Ricciardo, someone who showed so much promise, like he could have gone on to become a world champion. But on the other side of that coin, there are so many drivers in Formula 2 and reserve drivers sitting in garages who have showed a lot of promise in junior series, while Lawson and Bearman have also showed promise in F1 by subbing. Surely it's more of a shame if drivers like that are being kept out by someone like Daniel Ricciardo, since he doesn't have the speed anymore. Alonso, Verstappen, Hamilton, they were all promising juniors that someone took a chance on.

Its probably fair to assume that the weight difference between the drivers is playing into some of that 1-2 tenth average gap also. Not sure where the RB is in relation to the weight limit, but every kilo of ballast that's better placed helps car balance and driveability.

Great analysis! One of my pet theories about Daniel is that he relies on a build up over three practice sessions to show speed, more so than other drivers. If that build-up gets interrupted, it ends up in lack of pace in qualifying. And now, we are told he will miss FP1 at Suzuka, so RB can give Iwasa a spin. I can’t see him turning this deficit around at next GP

Man, stop this. Logan is a WILLIAMS ACADEMY DRIVER so yeah ofc his owm team gives him 2 seasons! They even said they brought him into F1 a year too early. Lawson has been to DTM and Super Formula to prepare for F1…and cos he is part of RED BULL JUNIORS ACADEMY he stays at one of the RB teams. Bearman is a crash wonder in F3 and F2. Last season he crashed way too much!! Do you even watch F3 and F2? Even this weekend he made a mess of his F2 Quali and the race…. Stop comparing rookies from different academies…their OWN TEAMS should give them a seat, like Williams did to Logan. Williams has 2 F2 rookie drivers currently on the grid preparing them for F1. @@Redlingstein I take on board what you're saying, and rookies do need some time to show what they can do, but its the top 20 seats in motorsport, so to finish with just 1 (retrospective, following DQs) point at the end of a complete season when other drivers have jumped in equally backmarker cars (DV in williams, and Lawson in an AT) and scored in less time. Teams need to score, vowles made that clear when he put alex in the car. $12million extra for each constructors place is no joke I maintain that Nyck De Vries made a mistake going to redbull. If he'd have joined williams, as they offered him, to start in 2023, he'd already been a merc jnr under vowles, but he could sit in that car, with that team around him and albon to learn from, knowing he had legit scored points already in their car, for that team. I think that does a lot for confidence. And he would have been given the same patience likely that logan is being shown. sadly the allure of RB must have been too good.

Checo should have been miles ahead of everyone else in Australia and bagged P1 without breaking a sweat. He didn't. In fact, he didn't even podium. Daniel's performance in the VCARB-01 is probably irrelevant if Red Bull know he's fast in the RB20, especially if he's faster than Checo (which is likely, especially given the inherent driving styles in question: Daniel's mirrors Max's, Checo's does not). Red Bull need a driver who, in the very least, can win when Max can't. They also need someone marketable, and who Max likes. I doubt they'll risk ruining Liam Lawson by promoting him too quickly (see: Gasly; Albon), and I doubt Yuki's really in contention for the Red Bull seat (he's talented, but he's Honda's pick). Carlos may not be willing to go back to Red Bull, and Alonso might be seen as too head-strong. It's not as simple as many people make out.

Sure, I have my bias, but it really isn't as bad as it looks. Sure, quali isn't his best asset atm, but if you can make it up in the race, and be running similar pace to your teammate, and be within 1-2 tenths, it isn't that bad. And yes I agree with you when you say "Peak Yuki isn't close to peak Ricciardo", which is more the reason I'm still hopeful, although don't get me wrong, as an Aussie DR fan, I'm massively disappointed. If he can't improve enough, and is consistently beaten by Yuki, yeah he hasn't done enough to earn his place in F1 anymore, and Lawson deserves the seat in 2025. But he's not 0.5+ seconds off consistently.

Ricciardo was only good in Mexico. In Hungary both set literally same time in qualifying and in the race Yuki got screwed in the strategy as usual. Ricciardo pace was good but far superior strategy and clear air.
