THIS. IS. IT. Audience was always pushed to hate on Jenny, Vanessa, Dan because the writers kept telling the same story of how hanging out with the wealthy corrupted them. I get all that & yes it happened but these Upper East Siders always seem to be portrayed as victims or “heroes” in the end. I still imagine an alternate reality where Jenny & Vanessa & Dan actually pursue their talents. Blair could never match Jenny’s talent in design, which explains why she always saw Jenny as a threat. Her being a “dictator of taste” is a consolation prize. Vanessa at the beginning was too good for any of these boys including Dan. I want her to be making a documentary about the 1% (like the Johnson &Johnson scion in real life). There is a huge audience. Dan… well I guess he did get published in the end & earned their “respect”.
@Yuu-d7b2 ай бұрын

Crazy thing is, GG actually seems to be aware of this??? That conversation where Vanessa tells Juliette that the main group will always defend and make excuses for each other, but will rip apart anyone else - the narrative seems aware that the rich characters will never be demonised the way the other characters are. You could almost argue that it's a meta commentary on the reality of capitalism but I don't know how much credit I should give the GG writers lmao

I have been saving this for a night where I can blast it on my TV and drink an appropriately unhinged amount of wine as I watch ... because well yes

We know Vanessa's story! Her parents are hippie artists who live on a commune in Vermont. Vanessa wants to become a filmmaker and frolic in the city, so she moves to Brooklyn to live with her sister. In the show she's homeschooled so her location in flexible. In the books she's on scholarship at Constance.

i’ve watched this show all the way thru like 4 times, yet I’m still somehow amazed at the ridiculousness of the plot lines

THANK YOU MIKE I listen to the GG recap series on repeat as my go to background noise. Your vernacular has made its way into my daily vocabulary because of these works of art and their endless rewatch-ability

Waittt I’m JUST rewatching this and I catch myself whispering ”xoxo, mike’s mic” to myself every time I hear the theme song 😭😭

Since I started watching your recaps, I've bought the entire show on DVD, for one because it's a lot of fun and secondly because it's pretty memeworthy to own it on dvd. Thanks for blessing us with these recaps 🙏
