This is an amazingly well done story of how even in a post climate catastrophe world it still sucks to be the cleaning lady.

Looking at the symbolism at the end there, where she took off her mask It dawned on me that we were seeing a less Human version of the Janitor for most of the film. She was wearing a mask that enabled her to live, but dehumanised her like it did the soldier she killed, the colonel and everyone else When she removed her mask, she became fully Human in both our eyes and Adam's. She assumedly dies with a creature that she saved, not as one of the many people in that base, but as a Human. It's about the concept of Humanity, Compassion, Empathy and the overwhelming desire to act upon them in many people. Absolutely beautiful
@gregorylagrange7 жыл бұрын
Listen to opening dialogue and the shot of the poster on the elevator wall. Hints that she may have gotten gills and doesn't die, but in fact she can breathe. So while she won't be able to live done there with the creature, she does share something with him. So she's connected but not of it. So you get the space between them. That ties into the title.

Hahaha... Being human isn’t changed by the fact we use tools. Tools are an extension of our humanity, it is what allows us to thrive. To think something designed by humans makes us less human it contrived utopianism founded on ridiculous notions.
@Heedfulconch34 жыл бұрын
@@techpriest6962 I think what I was positing was the idea of purity, less about what is more human or less human, or even just Human from a psychological perspective Obviously the tools don't physically make her less Human, just symbolically more like the people around her. In the base with the mask, she is a worker. In the deep with Adam, she is her own self with him

What a wonderful film; I loved it! I believe she had gills; but the bad air quality was such that even if you had gills, you wouldn't want to be breathing the deadly air. The mask she wore looked like oxygen; that's why the evil man said, "why is she wasting the oxygen?"He believing she unworthy of oxygen. The mask was to help filter the air; because it's so polluted. She had her neck covered with a scarf to hide the gills.. There was no oxygen tank attached, I was just wondering why she would be working on the polluted surface, when she could live below. But then maybe she had it done a long time ago as a child. The posters were old, and getting gills had been done for years. But no longer done as it was in the past, the experts are gone.. She is poor, but unsure about living in the ocean. Most of the population is gone, and so is the expertise to get gills. Then they find Adam and the fat rich man plans to take his. It looks like they had been taking many, probably for other rich people who could afford it. As we could see the bloody mess left behind. These operations are done carelessly and in dirty conditions. You can see there were other dirty tanks that were used in the past, in the room. She decides to rescue the ocean man Adam, she knew she had to make a decision to either stay there and watch them kill another, or push him off into the ocean and she fall with him. She rescues him and goes in with him. When finally in the ocean, she looks around and sees the wondrous beauty, as she slowly sinks! She is amazed and awe struck, because she had never seen the ocean before. He, Adam saved her from sinking to low and brought her up higher. She removed the mask to let him know she too could breath.It's a happy ending!

Gee Tee, Do really not see that this man was portrayed as someone who thought this woman, a fellow human being breathing the air, (a necessity to live), was a waste of air, was written to look like an evil uncaring person with no empathy. And those are textbook attributes of a psychopath. Are you asking me twice if I have a fish fetish, because I actually paid attention to this short film and was able to articulate my thoughts in writing? Oh yes, and because my profile name on KZbin is MsAquaLady1? Well, if you truly want to know why I call myself that, I'll tell you. First, I absolutely love to swim in fresh water and in the ocean surf. I'm also a professional artist, and besides being commissioned for portraits and doing Irish landscapes, I mostly paint water scenes like Koi fish ponds and water Lilies, reflections and ripples on the the pond water. I also paint aquatic life. My favourite animals that I've owned and trained and painted, are horses. Does that tell you I must have a horse fetish too? To answer your obvious fascination with my feeling about fish is: no, I don't have a fish fetish; but I do love and raise fish as a hobby. But I also love my two dogs and children and my husband and I serve the Lord, who I love the most. In fact I really love and know a lot about animals also. So Gee Tee, did I satisfied your curiosity? Just wondering; is there something that you love and enjoy? God bless you! Have a great week.

Beautiful, as always. Although I hate the way they usually leave us hanging! So I decided to continue the story... When Eve removed her mask, which connected her to the oxygen tank, she finally embraced her father's side. She removed the scarf around her neck and let her gills show. She could breath under water. "You know you're the only one alive who has ever seen them," Eve told Adam, who couldn't stop looking at her neck, and her eyes. "But how?" He asked, still in shock. "My dad... Wait, you speak English?!" Turns out Eve's mother used to be a deep sea diver who spent most of her life in the sea- on her boat, and half of it in the sea. She was a collector of precious sea-stones. One day her leg got stuck and she couldn't swim back up, and after an hour of struggling, she fainted. Next day, she woke up in her boat. Someone had saved her. But there were no signs of any person, and she was miles and miles away from land. She was too weak to fish for her food, but a day later, she woke up to find all kinds of fish and crustacean at the corner of her boat. This happened the next day, and the next, and the next. A week later, she stayed up all night, hidden, wanting to find out who saved her life and kept feeding her. That's when she met Soul. A fishan. They swam together a lot. And she thought he was the kindest of beings. He thought she was the most beautiful. It didn't take long, they got attached, feelings got involved, so did their bodies. Eve was born 25 years ago on that same boat. She loved water, a lot. Her gills would come out from her neck and waist every time she felt so much, or any time she was under water longer than her lungs could allow. Her morning swim with her dad now just a memory. Sometimes she wondered if it really ever happened. But her mother got really sick when she was 15. They had to go back to land. She died in the hospital. The hospital which had an undergound lab, where Eve kept being assigned to clean. Before she died, Eve's mother made her daughter promise her that she'll never go back to the sea. The Fishan Cheiftan had found out about her, and wanted to kill her, and prevent the humans from ever finding out about her- a halfling. She was too young to live in the boat alone anyway. So she stayed. Eve started working at the hospital in exchange for food and a place to sleep. She never made friends, or dated, never let anyone too close because of the fear that her gills would come out when she was too angry, or too happy, or too sad, or too aroused. She kept to herself, and didn't do much other than live, work, and breath. Until Adam. "Wow. Well, that explains a lot." Adam replied after a moment of silence. "You have to come with me." "No, I can't. It's not safe. Nowhere is safe for me..." Eve softly said. She needed to find a place to hide. A new place on earth, a new identity, a new life. "No, you'll be safe. Nothing bad will happen to you down here. Come with me." Adam insisted. He took her hand and started pulling her with him. "Stop! How do you know that?? You can't help me, no one can, but myself. You need to let me go, I need to find my way back... Wait, you didn't tell me how you can speak my language. My mother told me your species speaks something else." "Yeah, we do. Well, most of us at least." "So how comes you can speak English? You were only in the tank for 5 days!" "Our new Chieftan taught me. He's my neighbour." "Oh. He can understand and speak English? My mom never told me that some of you cou..." Eve stopped mid-sentence. It couldn't be. "What's your new Chieftan called?" She held her breath, almost knowing what will come next. "Soul. He's called Soul." Adam responded. THE END.

This film is so beautiful. Few movies can reach really inside of you and truly touch your heart. Whoever did this has a real talent for making extraordinary films. Yes, the movie "The Shape of Water" bears striking similarity to this short film (with the exception of a few differences like the time and geographic location within the story, and the heroine in this short film not being mute). So what? I believe movies like these should be appreciated. I want more movies that explores profound truths. What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to love? What does it mean to fight to save a life when others would have disregarded it out of cruelty and greed. Like Eliza signed in "The Shape of Water" trailer in response to her neighbor being reluctant to help save the creature who captured her heart and pointing out that he's not human, "If we do nothing, then neither are we." It really resonates with you.

Was perfect until the end. What's the symbolic meaning of her taking off her breather. And also, the water pressure would have crushed her like a tin can.
@reuteratwork89837 жыл бұрын
The reason she took off her mask is because it didn't matter anymore -- prior to that, I was wondering what exactly she was going to do, since she couldn't go back to the facility -- well, instead of just waiting for her oxygen to run out, she took action, & embraced her end -- &, at the same time, showed Adam her unobstructed human face... As to the water pressure -- we don't actually know how deep she went -- so that's not really a valid criticism...

the guy said she was wasting oxygen because oxygen is scarce and she had a bottle and mask on. there is nothing else to be derived from that statement. She was basically called a nobody, now she saved adam, so she's a somebody. She accepted her fate at the end and took off her mask because how could she go back home anyway after doing what she did? Plus earth and humanity is dying off and she just ruined any chance of finding a way to alternate breathing anyway. Who knows, maybe the dr would have figured something out or maybe it would have been a waste. she basically accepted her fate in death as she took of her mask to see adam face to face at the end.

For those who are here because of Del Toro's alleged plagiarism, both he and Fox have already spoken, Guillermo had to reveal that since 2011 he signed a contract where he sold the main idea of the film (a cleaning lady saves a humanoid and amphibious creature) to the 20th century fox chain, and this short film was filmed in 2015, which not only proves that Guillermo did not plagiarize, but also suspects a possible filtering (sale) of part from someone close to the project and the production house, but Guillermo has already said that he has good faith and that he expects this to be a simple coincidence with similar influences, he says that he does not like to think badly, and that he hopes that this does not have more background (like someone leaking the idea of your project).

No Adam is smart he knew that she wanted to die for what her fellow humans did to him but he forgave her and swam to get the mask to save her lol that's my theory and if you want proof if you watch at 10:45 you see him look at the mask falling before looking at her again so he must know she needs that to survive. P.S it was just a glimpse I'm not surprised if nobody noticed it the first time.

That was the first thing that entered my mind. She did work in a facility where they put gills on people, however I got an implication that they hadn't perfected it yet.

Bodzky SunflowerTv: That was one of the most confusing and unexplained issues in this short. Did she commit suicide in order to save Adam? Or is she also able to breathe underwater since she took off her oxygen mask? I'm just as confused as you are. Also, if this is animation, it is some of the most incredibly done animation I've ever seen. I swear I almost cannot tell that this is CGI. Great work!

I believe she can breathe under water. Not only the foreshadowing. But the end you dont see a air tank. Nor do you see one falling down with the breather mask..
@martinthewarrior50167 жыл бұрын
that fact that her at the end you see her mask wasnt attached to a oxygen tank makes it seem to me that she had gills and was trying to hide it from the other humans.

Fish gills won't work for warm blooded animals. Gills would be giant heat exchangers, just like lungs. The only problem is water beïng a few hundred times more dense than air. It would suck the heat out of you. That's why marine mammals still have lungs instead of gills.

Grammar Jew It just shows you can't please anybody You say that ambiguous endings are overused Other people say that having an ending that ties everything up is like spoon feeding an audience Can anybody be happy?
@smackfanxion7 жыл бұрын
I think people that complain about story telling, telling to much story, are stupid. Its like reading the first half of a book then whining that the writer finished the rest. Wanting to get a complete story and wanting half of a whole are not equivalent things. Especially when, in context, a vast majority of short films, here on youtube for example, follow the cliche. Almost exclusively. Some dont. Which is cool. ...and no you cant please everyone. Some want world piece while others still think that skin colour is war worthy. The only thing we potentially should be aiming for is the sensible thing to do. Which, when telling a story, is actually telling a story.
@spookyboi31397 жыл бұрын
Grammar Jew Well it's good to see some people still have a brain My only problem with your opinion is that sometimes, having an ambiguous ending is good Also some endings don't have to be completely told, I believe just showing enough is good, because then the person can use their brain and go "well thats pretty self explanatory" Then again, it's called "opinion" for a reason
@smackfanxion7 жыл бұрын
"Opinion" is relative. My 'opinion' was in the first line. The rest of my position is observation and preference. Just to clarify its also specifically about 'completeness'. A narrative that... say... fades to black with the audience knowing exactly what happens is complete. You dont need to show it to complete it. Or as you say 'completely told' it can be shown or heard, etc. For example Im not overly fond of this videos ending. I feel like this ended just short of concluding the adventure. I think its fairly certain she died but... I dont know. If I wanted to make up an ending I would have made up a story. Actually I do that regularly to be fair but all the same....

What a wonderful short story. for me it shows the futility of the propensity for "human 'over analytically idealised belief in-and-of reality' whereas, in reality in the 'true sense of the word - as is embodied in the glorious animation of Adam - in terms of "a sense of wonder & beauty" [which is in my view what reality 'really is about) juxtaposed against the futility of "narrow-minded mentality of the human mind). i like to wonder that the cleaning lady didn't dye after all that she was 'given a gift that Adams species may have had the capacity to give thus providing a beautiful and more wondrous ending to this simple but Highly compassionate cleaning lady. There is something to be learnt in this film, that is to never let go of our in-ate ability to "imagine" beyond that that we simply see with our own eyes - being more by that of our "IMAGINATION".

This came out BEFORE the Shape of Water. Del Toro borrowed heavily from several sources. Though I enjoyed The Shape of Water, stylistically it borrowed heavily from other movies I had seen before.

Martin Solomon Nope. The film the Shape of Water has been in production for over 5 years and this was just made. Certainly the name is different and I surmise that they probably got some type of legal advice giving them the go ahead to produce the short.
