A poacher’s wire snare cut the skin of this mother elephant’s front left leg. Given the depth of the wound made by this cable she must have struggled with considerable force before managing to break free. At the beginning of the video we see a large circular groove on the carpus (the wrist in humans) due to the repeated strangulation by the cable. This groove has been partially filled by soft tissue which have been dried by air the elephant blew threw her trunk and by plasters made with sandy earth.
Five weeks later this female elephant walks without a limp but with is still unable to put all her weight on the injured leg. A layer of skin has begun to cover the soft tissue which filled the groove. In a mud bath this mother elephant self treats her wound by applying a plaster of clayey mud which she spreads carefully over the regenerating skin with her trunk. This treatment creates a better asepsis and a protection for the wound which without a bandage could become overrun by files and all sorts of parasites. Unlike canines and feline whose repeated licking of a wound promotes healing, elephants are unable to lick themselves. The self treatment performed by this elephant works to replace the healing properties of self licking.
Has this elephant tapped into her “elephant memory” to remember how her mother or other congeners healed themselves in similar cases? Or rather is this high pressure cleansing and dressing of the wound with sandy earth or mud a method of self treatment that is innate in elephants?
The President of Gabon, Mr. Ali Bongo Ondimba says that “the elephants of Gabon are under siege because international trafficking had lead to a sharp increase in the price of ivory in the region. I call on the international community to join us in this fight. If we do not reverse this trend quickly, the African elephant will be exterminated.” Mr. Ali Bongo Ondimba has pledged to toughen the penalties for anyone caught red handed in the trafficking of ivory
It’s an enormous job to monitor a country half the size of France and largely covered by forest. Despite numerous arrests and the subsequent destruction of the poachers weapons, unfortunately their wire snares scattered in the vastness of the forest, remain active.
The Gabonese authorities are truly determined to put an end to this “elephanticide”. (Robin Alcorn translation)

This is really interesting. They learn from their family but at one time one elephant must've figured out that applying clay as a protection for wounds and passed it down.

I've seen the same process used by vets. I have a vivid memory of the time my Dad (I was 4) put mud on my bee sting, too. Mud for cooling and to relieve itching (and to draw out poison). I'm sure I remember the latter because it violated all the rules I knew about owies and how to treat them.

*Argargillaceous mud has several virtues: it allows elephants to:* - to improve their protection against insects because when the mud dries, it creates a shell that crushes the parasites that live on their skin. - to protect themselves from the sun. - to cool them when the water in the mud evaporates. - to heal oneself after a deep wounds May I invite you to watch more of my videos showing elephants using the virtues of this mud: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4qnZXiPqaZ1faM Mom elephant and her baby wallowing in the sun-dried mud. Did she use the mirror to see how the wound is and to treat it with precision? Or was this just a random site for her to do this?
@XHB06400CANNES

To be able to use a mirror to look at a part of your body that you cannot see directly, you have to be self-aware. However, if African elephants are intelligent, they do not have the cognitive capacity to recognize themselves in a mirror, whereas a few rare Asian elephants have succeeded (brand test). The tip of their trunk is very sensitive and acts as a third eye. This allows them to precisely direct their water jets in order to regularly clean their wounds by getting rid of infected parts and thus obtain a good cicatrization. Gabon Review May 28, 2019: According to NGO Conservation Justice , the heaviest sanctions come from the court in Franceville in Haut-Ogooué where Djamal Hamadou was sentenced to one year in prison for repeated offences due to the detention and sale of ivory. Three hunters, Hervé Yembengoy, Patrick Mpirero and Egide Lekoune, were sentenced to one year in prison for hunting a fully protected species (Elephant) and illegal possession of weapons. As for Camille Bala and Parfait Nzote, they in turn were sentenced to 1 year in prison, including 4 months suspended for complicity. "These strong decisions should deter wildlife traffickers," the NGO hopes. "Pending the new Forest Code, Gabon's legislation remains weak as a deterrent to wildlife traffickers. While the maximum prison sentence is only six months, it is 3 years in Cameroon, 5 years in Congo, 10 years in Benin and Burkina Faso," notes Conservation Justice, which hopes that the Government will find a solution as soon as possible to remedy this situation.

Conclusion?
