“It’s not that exercise is an antidepressant, it’s that not exercising is a depressant.” So says this week’s guest - and he’s redefining youth mental health education for the 21st century in line with this powerful belief.
David Bidler is a social entrepreneur dedicated to reinventing education for the 21st century. In 2019, he founded Physiology First University a non-profit education centre, which teaches the latest science of the brain and body by offering classes - in neuroscience, exercise physiology, sauna and cold exposure, to all ages but with a particular focus on teenagers and adolescents.
David’s core belief is that if we could teach all the kids around the world the fundamental skills of breathing, nutrition, movement and rest, as a priority over the current education system, we could see a huge change to the rates of poor mental health.
He believes that we’re often doing young people a disservice by labelling them with mental health disorders, instead of looking at their lifestyles and giving them the tools to feel better. His facility teaches students about anxiety by helping them experience it in a controlled setting, so they know exactly what the fight-or-flight response feels like. They increase their own heart rate, through exercise and then lower it, through breathing techniques. And so, because they know what anxiety feels like, they can ‘reclaim’ agency over their anxiety, by realising it’s not a loss of control and by learning - through first-hand experience - how they can navigate their own nervous systems to effectively manage it.
David’s goal is to put Physiology First campuses all across the globe - he wants to create a healthy alternative to the current educational system - one that integrates an academic curriculum alongside a health one.
This is a fascinating conversation that will give you a fresh understanding of your own physiology. Ever since I came across David on Instagram, I have been inspired by his work and what he is trying to do. He is a passionate individual, trying his best to make the world a better place. I hope you enjoy listening.

David's approach to mental health education is truly groundbreaking. By focusing on teaching fundamental skills like breathing, nutrition, movement, and rest, we can empower individuals to take control of their well-being.

Very well said! Breathwork is central. Nutrition as well. I also regularly consider the balance between rest and motion. It's also worth thinking about effective supplementation like spirulina, zinc, selenium and electrolytes. Moreover, letting go is also key. Loosening the muscles and getting centered.

Feng shui styled schools with calming colors and open outdoor classes in nature surroundings would also attribute to healthy learning. Sound bowls, drumming circles, and grounding meditation can also add to the experience. Our children are our future 🙏

I always gravitated to nature and outdorr activities but I gave up on myself. Drum circles are awesome. I used to go these and they were awesome. Music was always great therapy. Art therapy and nature therapy. The worse thintg I ever did was to entangle myself with reigious groups. They made me feel like I am a piece of crap and unworthy.

This is a wonderful conversation. Keep in mind there are many people who do, every day, have to be on high alert because of a lack of stability. Poverty rates and violence are real issues not limited to occasional instances. What I've become deeply interested in over the last decade is reigniting the passion to change; the assurance within that change is available to all. The want to want different and see a path toward it. When one is in the throes of depression, anxiety, poverty, abuses, addiction, straight up hunger, they are often unreachable, often have lost very early on a sense of belonging or familiarity. Remember those who are on the margins - they give us the opportunity to practice our humanity with no thought of reward. Once finding the real meaning of existence, often our bodies stop working against us and lean in.

It is so refreshing to actually see medical professionals actually nailing and doing to right thing. I'm not just talking about this guest but others and yourself Doc. I'm a medical (or more was) professional and I started with gusto and then every year became more and more disillusioned. Especially over the last few years

This is one of the most inspiring and hopeful podcasts I have heard/seen. If we can just start to recognise that two things influence the mental wellbeing of our children - that is 1) the connection to social media and 2) the adults around them. Lets work on changing the adults behaviours. In the classroom and in the home. Setting good examples - in rest, in nutrition, in healthier habits, in movement and natural light... Its a big one. A tough one - but drip by drip, surely we have to try. Take the focus off 'stuff' and replace it on 'people'.

Anxiety is an absolutely essential emotional response which has the capacity to bring amazing and wonderful outcomes into the world! Every emotion is just a teacher and we should be listening to what it’s trying to tell us. How do you think so many great artists create such incredible pieces of art… they were fueled by trying to find ways to transform there anxieties and the like! We should be praising anxiety too for what it has to offer. Without it there could be no peace and calmness, they inter exist and depend on everything in order to arise and manifest. We can’t get rid of it If we try to get rid of it then that’s like cutting an arm off. That phantom limb would still be there even if we did cut the arm off!

Mental Health gets attention if a person tries to harm themselves or others. Or a concerned person reports behaviour causing fear.ie: drug or alcohol use anger outbursts etc. I have always felt that there needs to be assessments in homes. And supports in homes.

42:50 “why do you use cold plunge a saunas to teach kids about anxiety and depression”? I wish I’d had this at school. I’m only learned by accident in the last few years of affording to go to spa hotels that I feel absolutely reset and incredibly calm after doing a round of saunas and cold plunges. This stuff should be prescribed to people not meds.

In a children's hospital I worked at had a spec ed program and they were short one student to continue ed grant funding. What did they do? Any meany miny mo and chose another patient/student and submitted the report to continue grant funds. They need to be monitored! That means a normal child is labeled in the system with spec ed needs that shouldn't have been.

One thing that annoys me so much is how adults (especially those in schools) treat children who are struggling and tired. Kids typically hear "You're tired now? You should be feeling great! How will you handle being an adult?" How is this helpful. And when kids try to pull back from school or activities to re-calibrate their physiology, they're shamed and punished for it. It is such a backwards system.

And in.some schools where spec ed classes need a specific number of spec ed to make a class for grand funding...they will seek out normal students just to get grant funding. All for money . And I have seen where many seek out very young students stating they need speech therapy whereas nothing is wrong with them but they are young and will grow out of it. Over-diagnosing to justify their grant programs and the teachers job!
