Aged 102 (and a half!) years, today’s guest is the oldest person I’ve welcomed onto the show. Dr Gladys McGarey is co-founder of the American Holistic Medical Association and author of the fantastic new book, The Well-Lived Life: A 102-year-old Doctor’s Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age.
Many people consider Gladys to be the ‘mother of holistic medicine’. For years now, she has been trying to spread the message that health is not just physical - it involves mental, emotional and spiritual elements in equal measure.
Her message is that living a long and healthy life isn’t about the right diet, or taking vitamins and supplements. Instead, it requires a shift in perspective. A long life is all very well, but what are you living for?
For many people today, finding one’s purpose in life feels like an optional extra when we’re busy working, raising children or caring for parents. It can be hard to know who we really are or what we want out of life. But Gladys insists we should still strive to identify our reason for getting out of bed every morning. And we should realise that all of life’s experiences exist to teach us something.
Gladys is a wonderful storyteller, who uses examples and anecdotes from her own, purpose-driven life to explain the secrets that she shares in her book. She reveals how the devastation of her husband asking for a divorce, when she was 70, eventually became her strength. Rather than stay a victim of heartbreak, she made a choice to move forward and help others. And that’s a common theme that comes up in this conversation - the fact that we always have a choice.
This is a wonderful, life-affirming conversation about the very essence of life and health. It was a real privilege and honour to talk to Gladys - I hope you enjoy listening.

I COULDN'T agree more. After raising 4 children, taken care of my husband for the last 5 years of his life. He passed just before our 50th wedding anniversary. So on my own at 68 years old. Post Covid Shut down. I decided to buy a Motor Home and visit all National Trust Properties in the U.K. and write a book about my travels. Been doing it nearly 3 years and feel young, fit, (no meds) what so ever. Full of life and hope and a real zest for life. She is right, we must have a purpose in life.

I've noticed a common theme after watching several videos of interviews with centenarians. Often they have been involved in the medical field but they don't promote prescribed medication instead focusing on the basics, exercise, good sleep, good food.

That’s a really good point. it seems like it’s always the beginning of the end when doctors start putting people on medication’s in their 50s and 60s. There’s just no way to tell how they’re harming metabolic function only that it’s for certain they are harming it.

My Dad just passed at age 96. His health declined with too many things like prostrate & being able to urinate on this own. Walking became hard for him. Then he had a fall & fractured his hip & it was all downhill within months. God Bless this lady. She seems she’s in good shape although she mentioned her eyesight wasn’t good. My Dad & her were basically from the same generation. Very wise people from the Greatest Generation. Sad to think not many are left.

As someone entering her 70s next year, I love this. I am a full time realtor. My third career. It has been my intent to never stop being of service. I tried retirement in my early 50 s. And disliked it. No one thing is the secret. Love what yoga has done for me in the last 20 years. Recently gave up alcohol. It no longer was serving me. Love chocolate! Love change . Love meeting people. And love my spiritual life. This was lovely to hear, Gladys is wonderful! Thank you.

I have to share this with you, Gladys McGarey. I went through a painful divorce, and over time I reached a point of acceptance. I put a recording on my answering machine. "This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad." God showed me that out of everything bad comes something good. Recently I had an epiphany. I know I can heal myself, and I know my purpose. I needed to hear you speak because it's important to me to know like-minded people in this world. Thank You.

Gladys I'm so happy to listen to you. I finally retired after 50 years of practicing family medicine because I felt like I was fighting a loosing battle with "corporate" medicine and not being allowed to do a holistic practice. Being forced to see 60 people a day does not do anyone any service. My goal is to live to 120 and beyond. We are designed to live a long healthy life and you got it girl. The paradigm of medicine has to change because people are not benefiting on all levels we could provide if given the time to do so.

Am 58 retiring next year but the thought of retirement gives me weakness. My apologies to everyone who have retired and filing social security during this time after putting in all those years of work just to lose everything to a problem you never imagined to happen. It’s so difficult for people who are retired and have no savings or loved ones to fall back on.

True, It has never been easier to understand how to build your money after retirement than it is right now with the inflation, when you may study and experience a completely variegated market passively by employing a successful portfolio-advisor. The impacts of the U.S. dollar's gain or fall on investments, in my opinion, are complex.

The issue is this! Most often, those with little to no experience in the stock market attempt to buy on their own. It previously occurred to me, but I learned from it and contacted "Camille Alicia Garcia " a finance expert with offices in the US, and everything changed. I earned $370k so far in the first quarter of this year.

I'm loving this. About to turn 80 in a few days. So much of what Dr. McGarey is talking about is resonating. For the past couple of decades doctors have been telling me, gleefully, that I probably have x number of years left and then seem disappointed when I go past that expiration date. This birthday is yet another one. "You may make it to your next birthday". Now it's a couple of days away I feel almost guilty about feeling so well. And I have spent time wondering why but I was always looking a little close to home when considering 'purpose'. Last time I was at the mall a woman pulled me to sit with her on a bench and told me a story of my having said, and told me of a detailed encounter over 2 decades ago, and how it affected her life and what she, in her mind, has done because of what was said. What I said. And that happens to me not often but, well yes, relatively often. Maybe our purpose isn't some big thing, maybe it's a lot of little things. Anyway, I'm obviously enjoying this. Thank you both.

What shameful attitudes your doctors have! They should be celebrating you! But I am not surprised that they are not...I completely agree that it actually IS a huge purpose to uplift, guide, listen, and help people in your everyday life! We are somehow taught that we have to travel the world, go to "exotic" locations, and make a big show of helping others...people seem to forget that others exist right outside our door, and we can touch them too, as you said, with a "lot of little things" that may very well be big things! I'm sure your wisdom and presence is a gift to many.

So I need all the encouragement I can get, I am 60 but I do not feel 60 ! Nor do I look it, but in my head I can get stuck with fear of my aging so listening to her, is so very inspiring and hopeful and maybe now I’ll get my hope back and look forward to living a long & healthy life ! As I have lived a young and healthy life before turning 60… Be glad 🫶

I followed her to her new practice and her daughter became my doctor while since Gladys was mostly working the foundation. Her daughter moved out of state and knew of the foundation from time to time but basically lost touch. Today, the Universe gave me this youtube to find her, again. The love of my life decided to leave me, I really love her so much I can’t stop thinking about her, I’ve tried my very best to get her back in my life, but to no avail, I’m frustrated, I don’t see my life with anyone else. I’ve done my best to get rid of the thoughts of her, but I can’t, I don’t know why I’m saying this here, I really miss her and just can’t stop thinking about her.

What a wonderful podcast! I love her! My mom went to heaven this past January at 96 years young and she had much of the same attitude about life as Gladys. She also realized more her worth (I think) in her early 90's. Now, we are helping my in-laws, who are both 91. My father in-law is in a nursing home (recently) and still has that can do spirit, even though he is stuck in a bed. My mother in-law has macular degeneration & is legally blind, but is still at her home. She has had the mentality lately that she wished they both could just die, because life is too hard physically. I am going to share Gladys' story with her & pray it brings her hope!

85? You aren't done yet :) My attitude is, each day gives you an opportunity / reason to have a purpose. You never know what effect you will have on another persons' life, a simple smile or an act of kindness may mean the world to them and even enable them to turn their life around. Your purpose doesn't have to be something you do all your life, you may have one purpose one week, such as to look after a sick child, and a different one the next, such as to help an elderly parent do their garden.

I have come to the conclusion that hospitals basically prolong death not life. First let us eliminate the word patient from the vocabulary and replace it with customer or client. That might be a good beginning to change the attitude of us all. Loneliness is big problem in the United States which keeps people less healthy than they could be. There is a great book that I read some time ago written by Sula Bennet "How to live to be 100: the life-style of the people of the Caucasus" A Whole chapter was about Kafi who lived to be 149 years old in Dagestan. Kafi was an important part of a family and was head of the household. I am sure she felt important and useful. When I pray each morning I ask God to give me the strength to do his will and what needs to be done. I also thank God for the strength he has given me so far. I feel stronger now than I have ever felt. Not only do I work to stay strong and healthy but also as beautiful as I can for the glory of God. I used to have a plaque on my desk: "Battered against the rocks of life I still stand proud. I still stand beautiful." I was born on July 16th, 1945. On occasion I have gone to a doctor when I have had a health issue. Never have they been able to help me in a way that I was willing to accept. Little by little God has sent me the way to help myself. Eva

At any job I've ever worked at, I have always seen it as pointless and I haven't been truly passionate about it. It was actually a mind opener to instead think of the job as a way to put food on the table, pay rent etc... and in that way give it purpose and meaning

One of my goals is to enjoy life. I also have an approach of how can I get the most out of and enjoy what I am doing in any given moment.? A simple example, how can I enjoy washing the dishes? Well, I can enjoy the warm water, the smell of the soap, remeber with pleasure the food I have just eaten, have gratitude for the food that I have dishes to wash. I can take pleasure in putting the dishes away into the cupboard and stand back with plesure and admire how tidy it all looks. Simple pleasures, gratitude and enjoyment of life.

So inspirational. Thank you Gladys. You are a beautiful soul with so much wisdom. I too have come to the realisation that we don’t have to get mixed up in other people’s drama. I do not watch the news. We can stand back and offer advice but we cannot do their work for them. I send out love and healing a couple of times a day and then. Give it up to God. Sometimes our Ego gets in the way and we need to keep it in check. Much love 💜

I have just listened to todays bite sized podcast with Gladys McGarey and I am now listening to her longer podcast with you. She talks such lovely sense and for the first time I smiled when I heard her say: this is the day the lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. My mum who died (aged 90) just before Covid would say this every day - the grief of my mum dying sits heavily with me, but this podcast listening to this wise woman has made me (for the first time in years) feel 'light' about my mum not being here with me anymore in a physical form.
