I COULDN'T agree more. After raising 4 children, taken care of my husband for the last 5 years of his life. He passed just before our 50th wedding anniversary. So on my own at 68 years old. Post Covid Shut down. I decided to buy a Motor Home and visit all National Trust Properties in the U.K. and write a book about my travels. Been doing it nearly 3 years and feel young, fit, (no meds) what so ever. Full of life and hope and a real zest for life. She is right, we must have a purpose in life.

I have to share this with you, Gladys McGarey. I went through a painful divorce, and over time I reached a point of acceptance. I put a recording on my answering machine. "This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad." God showed me that out of everything bad comes something good. Recently I had an epiphany. I know I can heal myself, and I know my purpose. I needed to hear you speak because it's important to me to know like-minded people in this world. Thank You.

I'm loving this. About to turn 80 in a few days. So much of what Dr. McGarey is talking about is resonating. For the past couple of decades doctors have been telling me, gleefully, that I probably have x number of years left and then seem disappointed when I go past that expiration date. This birthday is yet another one. "You may make it to your next birthday". Now it's a couple of days away I feel almost guilty about feeling so well. And I have spent time wondering why but I was always looking a little close to home when considering 'purpose'. Last time I was at the mall a woman pulled me to sit with her on a bench and told me a story of my having said, and told me of a detailed encounter over 2 decades ago, and how it affected her life and what she, in her mind, has done because of what was said. What I said. And that happens to me not often but, well yes, relatively often. Maybe our purpose isn't some big thing, maybe it's a lot of little things. Anyway, I'm obviously enjoying this. Thank you both.
@sawyerswonderfullife70498 ай бұрын
What shameful attitudes your doctors have! They should be celebrating you! But I am not surprised that they are not...I completely agree that it actually IS a huge purpose to uplift, guide, listen, and help people in your everyday life! We are somehow taught that we have to travel the world, go to "exotic" locations, and make a big show of helping others...people seem to forget that others exist right outside our door, and we can touch them too, as you said, with a "lot of little things" that may very well be big things! I'm sure your wisdom and presence is a gift to many.

My apologies to everyone who have retired and filing social security during this time after putting in all those years of work just to lose everything to a problem you never imagined to happen. It’s so difficult for people who are retired and have no savings or loved ones to fall back on.

True, It has never been easier to understand how to build your money after retirement than it is right now with the inflation, when you may study and experience a completely variegated market passively by employing a successful portfolio-advisor. The impacts of the U.S. dollar's gain or fall on investments, in my opinion, are complex.

I have come to the conclusion that hospitals basically prolong death not life. First let us eliminate the word patient from the vocabulary and replace it with customer or client. That might be a good beginning to change the attitude of us all. Loneliness is big problem in the United States which keeps people less healthy than they could be. There is a great book that I read some time ago written by Sula Bennet "How to live to be 100: the life-style of the people of the Caucasus" A Whole chapter was about Kafi who lived to be 149 years old in Dagestan. Kafi was an important part of a family and was head of the household. I am sure she felt important and useful. When I pray each morning I ask God to give me the strength to do his will and what needs to be done. I also thank God for the strength he has given me so far. I feel stronger now than I have ever felt. Not only do I work to stay strong and healthy but also as beautiful as I can for the glory of God. I used to have a plaque on my desk: "Battered against the rocks of life I still stand proud. I still stand beautiful." I was born on July 16th, 1945. On occasion I have gone to a doctor when I have had a health issue. Never have they been able to help me in a way that I was willing to accept. Little by little God has sent me the way to help myself. Eva

Don’t know how I could be so lucky? To witness this amazing dialog with two wonderfully compassionate people. Thank you so much for the sharing … honoring the whole person, recognition that we are all different and capable. The longevity ; we are here for a reason at every stage. I’m 85 this month and was thinking it’s all done 🤷♀️ thanks for the inspiration! 🫶

85? You aren't done yet :) My attitude is, each day gives you an opportunity / reason to have a purpose. You never know what effect you will have on another persons' life, a simple smile or an act of kindness may mean the world to them and even enable them to turn their life around. Your purpose doesn't have to be something you do all your life, you may have one purpose one week, such as to look after a sick child, and a different one the next, such as to help an elderly parent do their garden.

What a wonderful podcast! I love her! My mom went to heaven this past January at 96 years young and she had much of the same attitude about life as Gladys. She also realized more her worth (I think) in her early 90's. Now, we are helping my in-laws, who are both 91. My father in-law is in a nursing home (recently) and still has that can do spirit, even though he is stuck in a bed. My mother in-law has macular degeneration & is legally blind, but is still at her home. She has had the mentality lately that she wished they both could just die, because life is too hard physically. I am going to share Gladys' story with her & pray it brings her hope!

At any job I've ever worked at, I have always seen it as pointless and I haven't been truly passionate about it. It was actually a mind opener to instead think of the job as a way to put food on the table, pay rent etc... and in that way give it purpose and meaning

One of my goals is to enjoy life. I also have an approach of how can I get the most out of and enjoy what I am doing in any given moment.? A simple example, how can I enjoy washing the dishes? Well, I can enjoy the warm water, the smell of the soap, remeber with pleasure the food I have just eaten, have gratitude for the food that I have dishes to wash. I can take pleasure in putting the dishes away into the cupboard and stand back with plesure and admire how tidy it all looks. Simple pleasures, gratitude and enjoyment of life.

Amen to both doctors view points on "stop complaining about none compliant patients." Love that he said "who am I to tell a patient what to do." I've been labeled as that and was rushed & told what to do, I didn't comply. Thank God I didnt coz she didnt know my history & the surgery she'd demanded I get & needed was NOT needed at all.🙏🏽

I'm always so fascinated that we are surrounded by people who have lived extraordinary lives, and it's more amazing that these people are at such advanced ages. They've seen things that we can only imagine and learn about. I have a goal myself, at 23, to live into my 70s, 80s, and possibly even my 90s. So amazing.

Much love from Belgium, she is a known lady and what a wisdom, like many 'have' in older ages, sadly in our societys nowadays people must be without a wrinkle etc (blabla), the real life experience is IN all our elders, like Indian people showed us ages ago and still do. We can learn so much if we only open the frick up♥

So inspirational. Thank you Gladys. You are a beautiful soul with so much wisdom. I too have come to the realisation that we don’t have to get mixed up in other people’s drama. I do not watch the news. We can stand back and offer advice but we cannot do their work for them. I send out love and healing a couple of times a day and then. Give it up to God. Sometimes our Ego gets in the way and we need to keep it in check. Much love 💜
