One correction-only North Serbia (Vojvodina) and Belgrade is flat. Rest is mountain region with peaks over 2000 metres.

Beo isn't flat, it's hilly terrain across city, I live here, but from UK where almost all major cities are flat, then outlying regions of Kosmaj, Avala and Torlak.

@@paulwilliams2663 nice to see you living here, fellow Belgrader. You could argue that (old) Belgrade is hilly (although flat compared to mainland Serbia), but recently, main Belgrade expansion was to north and west across the rivers, into flat (geograficaly Vojvodina's) terrain-New Belgrade (largest municipality in Serbia with most businesses), Zemun (now basicaly merged with Zemun Polje, Batajnica, Galenika, Surcin and Banovci, once distant villages), Borca (huge technology park curently in construction), Surcin (place of future EXPO 2027 facilities). So much so, that it slowly overtakes (old) Belgrade. One (of many) bad side effects of this urban rapid development is that is being underwent on fertilest of agricultural soil. Cheers!

I'm sorry, but the part about Serbian history is completely mashed up, and chronologically not correct, there is a 1000 years between the Fall of Rome, and the Ottoman conquest of Serbia. There is a ton of history in that time period that was mashed up in the video, this isn't a hate comment, I'm just pointing out what I consider a very important mistake. Also, the thumbnail doesn't match Serbia, as Yugoslavia wasn't a part of the Eastern Block, and at one point, very distant from the USSR... I know comments like this can be very annoying, but I hope you understand where I'm coming from, thank you.

Thank you Pierce for such a positive and informative video about my country! I'd like to add just a few things: - Serbia was never a part of Eastern Europe. It borders with Eastern Europe (i.e. Hungary). It's a common mistake, so don't worry. - We use both, Cyrilic and Latin scripts. Cyrillic is an official script, so all the official documents are written only in cyrillic. However, both scripts are commonly used. The further South you go - Cyrillic prevails, on the North - Latin script. - The thing that everybody forgets to mention - we write phonetically. There is no spelling, so to say. One voice - one letter, so it's very easy to read something even without knowing the meaning. Very useful when you are looking for an address or something. - Stores. When you go to Greece, for example, every item found in stores has a label written in Greek. You have to guess, or ask someone. In Serbia 90% of what you can see on the shelves is written in English. This is an oversight for us (apparently there is no legislation yet) but it's very useful for tourists.

I like this video a lot! I'm going to use it in class! There's one more thing I'd like to point out "Serbia is notoriously flat", which is true only for the Northern part of Serbia called Vojvodina. If you go further south from Belgrade, Serbia is quite mountainous. The other thing is about "ćevapi or ćevapčići", meat similar to kebab, they are made from the combo of pork and veal, while in Sarajevo and many parts of Bosnia you can eat only veal/beef kebabs/ chevapi, and also in some towns of Serbia, like Novi Pazar and Sjenica. Overall, this is a great account of Serbia from the point of view of a stranger.

This is easily the most informed youtube video on Serbia that I've seen from a foreigner in the last three years. Well done. Oh, and that ruins that you mentioned in final part are not that old. ;) It is Gardoš Tower (or Janos Hunyadi tower), that was erected in 1890's to celebrate 1000 years of Hungarian kingdom. They put one of each in four spots of the kingdom, this happens to be the southernmost.

The reason why Serbian food is good is a combination of east and west? That's a nice way to put it...I would say it's s combination of fat and sugar....😂 As for the hard alcohol, rakija, the grape variety tends to be more common in Montenegro (likely influenced by the italian grappa), while in Serbia they have lots of plums, so that's what they distill.

Two things I have to add onto the video: Serbian beers have gone down in quality over the years, not worth drinking over other alcohol, foreign beer (Niksicko/Montenegro or Nektar/Republika Srpska are better choices than Lav, Jelen, Zajecarsko etc..) and that public transport while decent, always has a reputation for being late and not even saying or trying to excuse themselves as to why they are showing up an hour and 43 minutes late.

Listen, you haven't really seen the real Serbia. Except maybe a little in Niš. Ask the people of Belgrade and Novi Sad, especially those who have more than average money, where they spend their weekends. Not in Novi Sad, not in Belgrade, not in Subotica, not in any destination you mentioned. They spend their weekends in Western Serbia, most often on the mountain known as Zlatibor. When this regular weekly "migration" starts (like wildebeests in Africa) the roads are covered with endless columns of cars. These are thousands and thousands of cars. If you want to taste the real Serbia, come to Šumadija and Western Serbia. Belgrade is part of Šumadija, but it is on the very border of Šumadija. Go to Kragujevac, Užice, Požega... Where you've already been, it's just another metropolis like almost anywhere in Europe. the difference is in the variety of food that is adapted for foreign tourists. It looks a bit like real Serbian food. And a few historical monuments and that's all you can see there that represents real Serbian culture, tradition, cuisine...

Serbians use Latin in everyday life more than Cyrillic. As a Serbian, I don't remember using Cyrillic. Most media, tv, newspapers, restaurants, etc are used in Latin. Children are taught both alphabets at elementary schools and most of them use primarily Latin in high schools or universities Stop comparing us to the Russians who use only their Cyrillic alphabet. You didn't even mention that in your video.. Russian language is extremely different from serbian. Its almost like german and english. Russians share only arround 30 % dna with serbs not even half !! The flag is simillair because their both orthodox christian so they both have the byzantine double headed eagle and the colours are pan european, almost all european countries have those colours. Serbia existed way before russia. The serbs migrated to modern day russia from central and south eastern europe as illyrian/lusatian tribes they mixed with the autochtonous uralic and nordic peoples culture and language and started russia. This last thing is not a well known fact but can be easily prooven by researching and reading a little bit.
