It's ok, no Skatie's where harmed in the making of this video. Well, maybe just bruised a little.
I say that no-one talks about this skill but there are a few videos which cover it but often it's overlooked during tutorials. One of the most important things in skating is where your weight goes so I always try and cover this during our videos.
Control this skill and you'll be skating like a pro in no time!

We love your work Katie, thank you so much 😁🙏🏼 It's funny but I only recently started incorporating "One Footed" skating into my regular practice & it's amazing how just this has helped with everything else & massively helps when learning crossovers too! I can see how essential these skills are as they become the groundwork for more advanced techniques. Thx too again to your husband for his excellent camera work & for recording in 4K too! Hope you're not too sore from your backwards tumble - damn stones they're everywhere!

They’re definitely tricky at first. Make sure your trucks are loose so you can flex the foot side to side. I’m popping a video up this weekend which shows the truck adjustment.

There is so much I didn't know and so much that I love, e.g. you can control the spin of the wheels. You can't control the slide of the blade across the ice. Can't wait to get my skates. (5 long weeks)

Hi Katie, I’m new to your channel am in Sydney Australias, and am loving watching your tutorials! I started back skating last September during COVID lockdown, after 27yrs. I have shared your channel with two new skaters so they can subscribe to you as well. I loved your outtakes!! Thank you. I seriously just asked today, a group of derby girls I know, what’s the deal, after on a quiet road surface Thursday morning I quickly transitioned a little faster (almost straight from boots on at my car), than I probably would have as I am still trying to fluidly transition (I kind of have more confidence jump turning backwards but when not too fast). But, the slightest pebble or scrap of debris and bang, I was backward down like you were. Is there some secret? Some people skate backward over pavement cracks and joins without a care, yet my wheels seem to catch! I was using my Moxi Fundae wheels mostly, then shifted back to a little comfort with Moxi gummies and now pulse energy wheels soft for outdoors, seeing another of your wheel hardness discussions tonight I thought oh damn perhaps my wheels are stickier and am not lifting my feet so much at present 🤷🏼‍♀️. But neither make a difference with pavement joins or cracks for me, I always get nervous and turn around as I’ve fallen a bit grrrrr. I’d appreciate any thoughts or advice re backward skating outdoors. Thanks 🌸🛼🌸
@Skatie
@Skatie 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thank you for your support it’s really appreciated. Backwards skating outside is definitely my least comfortable skill. I find that the safest way to skate backwards outside is to keep both feet on the ground with very bent knees. As soon as I go to do edges on one leg outside. Ouch. Those stones are evil. Softer and bigger wheels help so the gummies are good. I prefer a 80a-ish wheel outside as it give you a bit more roll and the bigger wheel helps with clearing your kingpin (underside of your skate) from the ground. My biggest advice is helmet, pads etc so if the worst does happen you’re protected. But two feet backwards outside is much safer. I cover that in my backwards video. Stay safe xx. Enjoy your 🛼. ❤️ 🇬🇧

When you lean on the big toe does the heel have to be on the ground? Mind keeps lifting up.

It sounds like your trucks may be a little tight. When you lean do the wheels flex towards each other?

Hello there, I really like your videos. I have a problem - my roller skates (which are not of a very good quality - the only ones I could find here in my city) won’t make small circles when I press the edges. Actually, I need a lot of space to make a circle and never without making extra movements. As I see here, you just lean and make a full circle, but I can't. What could be the problem?
@Skatie

@Skatie
@Skatie 2 жыл бұрын
I’m fine, thank you. Just a bruised ego! 😆. Yes definitely, forwards I think I would have got away with it. Whenever I’m doing one foot edge work outside backwards it always feels unsafe, hence the full safety gear. I was kinda expecting it. It was definitely a (huge) rock! 😉 😂 🛼

If you’re new to skating it could be that you just haven’t built your ankle strength yet. Are your trucks adjusted so you have some movement?
