An Incomplete History of Strat Finding in GTAV Speedruns

This video takes a look at some of the first strats that were discovered for GTAV Speedruns back in 2013 and 2014, who found them and stories about how they were found, then takes a look at how strats were found/shared/worked on from 2015 to 2018.
My last video was comparing the 2014 to 2019 speedrun with the 5 year gap, and this video will cover many of the early histories of the strats seen in that video. The comparison I made was only 15 minutes long, as many of the early routing in the GTAV Speedrun was somewhat set in place by the time the run I covered from Dekap in 2014 was done.
Many guides for speedrunning don't cover all the strats. The guides I watched to learn GTAV Speedruns, the guides I watched to learn GTA:SA Speedruns, and the guides I googled for games like Fallout and Mario 64's Speedruns all shared one thing - they present the speedrun as the speedrun. I approached my Casual VS Speedrun in GTAV the same way - I presented the run as-is, as taking the time to list every single person who found every single strat would both triple the length of the guide, as well as be nearly impossible to actually fact-check as shown in this video. So videos like these are how I want to present who-found-what in GTAV Speedrun strat finding, along with my Strat Update series. It seems like the best way to document this info.
I'm not much of a strat hunter myself - most ideas I get or people give me I pass onto Burhac or Reloe as of these days, so most of my opinions on this come from the runners I've interacted with - my desire is to just use the strats, and make videos documenting the cool stories, if any, of how they were found, the Reloe Hospital Warp being a prime example from this video.
My statement of "the strat fades into the run and just becomes part of it" may not sit well with everyone but it really seems to ring true for most of the people I talked to (can see some of them below) who actual do strat finding, so I'm expressing what I see, not trying to present a fact or something.
I used Dekap's footage for lots of the 2013/2014 strats when the footage otherwise didn't exist. It was just readily available and better visual quality than anyone else's at the time.
I call this video "Incomplete" as knowing every single strat and the who and why behind them may be near impossible, and I doubt I will ever cover every single one. So making a video that covers as many as possible like this seems like the best thing to do instead.

I wish I had that info full-enough for inclusion in a video. In speedrunning, I was told by the runners when i started they just knew about it only with franklins power. the racing community had found it separately for online racing about 1.5 years ago now, some people on PS4 had found it, apparently something about using a broken controller when doing normal skid-boosts (short shifting on a bump to have the same effect as a brakeboost has now), and they were using a different button to get that effect and realize brake alone worked. someone from PS4 started playing on PC, and they used it in a single spot on the map or so. Serenniel and I saw him doing this in a video and asked him about it to get the half story, so we started testing ourselves and showed other people. People like chilli and adam10603 dove into the details of the game mechanics to understand it more (they are well known in the racing community for that), and everyone else started practicing it as we all learned and shared it. when i moved to speedrunning i learned about the Franklin power thing and we started combining all knowledge from both communities and it's exploded in use and popularity from there.

Can you please try this strat at prologue, and compare the time? 1. When Trevor presses the shutter switch, just keep doing it as usual 2. Once you killed enough enemies, the game should allow you to switch to Michael. Switch immediately! 3. Perform the same shootout as Michael, including entering the getaway car. In my case, if I enter the getaway car as Trevor, there will be additional lines of he saying "what took you so long", but it doesn't trigger when entering the getaway car as Michael.

Uh we tested this recently, its true that you physically get into the car faster as Micheal, but the extra time spent running with him loses you about 2 seconds.

You did a good job Baron. This video is a really interesting topic and has loads of info. I hope that this video becomes a popular series as a niche history topic is quite entertaining to watch. You're lucky that you've picked a newer game like GTA and not an older one like Super Mario Bros 3 or Banjo-Kazooie; as that history lesson probably would have extend the length of this video exponentially. I like the part @18:49 regarding the strats found by people becomes apart of the run. I had a question and you kinda answered it in the video already, but its still pretty interesting to mention. If text documentation in the forums slowly transformed into live chats lost in youtube/twitch and voice calls, it pretty much becomes impossible to document everything as time goes. Even if you were to scour all of the videos in that spreadsheet and see "old" new strats, its less likely for the runner to mention who found the strat as they've prolly practiced that section several times over and wouldn't even think to mention it in the WR run. All you can do is what you did - credit everyone who has helped build the community and establish what is here today.

I won't be doing that no, i've found some strats or helped test others, but i find it creates this real E-Peen thing when people care too much about who found what. like i said in the video, the initial find is cool but i just want my stuff to become part of the run, i don't feel a need to make something showing all my old stuff unless its new and has a cool story.

Using Trevor's power I was able to somehow manage to clip the stack of containers in the port during the port mission every runner hates. I'm doing this on PS3 btw so yeah I'm REALLY behind on the updates however most of the tricks still work. The power cancelled as I began to fall however at full health and full armor (not sure on the armor as I don't recall buying or finding any at the time) I tried the power fall and sure enough I face planted onto the containers and lived with BARELY any health left. Maybe you can see if there's any way to consistently pull it off.

hm, probably due to low FPS or old patch. so im assuming you hit the containers and continued falling anyways? i'd have to see how it affects health later in the run. we also don't have armor there in the run, so, likely a nogo but interesting to think about and try if i get a chance.

I was just playing a little gta v, and as i was playing the mission "caida libre" (i forget the exact spelling), I heard the pilot of the plane say something along the lines of "We've lost all hydralic control, no aileron control, very little rudder control" (something like that). That is an exact quote from the ATC recordings of United Airlines Flight 232, whose tail engine blew up and caused the plane to crash. I dont think a movie has been made of the incident, so it wouldnt fit in with that series of videos, but i thought you might be interested

I did not even went for the 100%. I finished the game once, played a little bit more and uninstalled it (low HDD space), but I still watch your videos religiously.

@@FriendlyBaron I feel connected to GTA V because i could not play it for a lot of time. My PC was weak and I only upgraded it two years ago, so I had to catch up on a lot of games series (Witcher, Fallout, Forza, NFS etc). I am low-key trying to tell you that your content is so great that the viewer doesn't even have to play the game to be interested about it.

there is a 1.5 minute break during Eye in the Sky where you don't need to make input which is almost exactly halfway into the run. About an hour later theres another 65 or so second break during Paleto Score setup

In regards to those removed/no longer available KZbin videos, you may still actually be able to 'recover' any old videos/clips through using the WayBack Machine web archive, as I've been able to watch a handful of otherwise deleted videos from KZbin that way! :o :) For example, between either my Watch Later or Favourite videos playlists, there are sometimes removed videos, but it still gives you the URL, so I'd take that URL, put it into the WayBack Machine, and in most cases was able to find one or more working snapshots from potentially years ago! Furthermore, some may not work first try, and may require refreshing the page a few times for the video to properly load in, since I think it uses an older flash player to load them, well, depending on how far 'back in time' you travel :P
