Interesting GTAV Speedrun Strats (That aren't actually faster) #1

Everyone loves to discuss and talk about the cool strats that are used in Speedruns - But I also want to give some notice and document some of the slower strats in the GTAV Speedrun, ideas that members of the community had that looked good on paper, but ended up not being faster once practiced.
These strats still give us more info about how the game works and often influence future ideas in the speedrun, so its important to keep track of these. As well, this now gives me a series for every type of strat - failed strats (this video), successful strats (Strat Update Series), and the Risky Strat Series for stuff that looks cool but works so un-often its not worth doing yet.
Another professional strategy that should have been included in this video is just to "play better lol" but it didn't quite make the cut.
Speedrunning often comes down to trusting the people who did runs before you - imagine someone starting Mario speedruns today, the game probably has over a decade of knowledge, and you basically just accept what people have found already and dive in. It's been the same for me in GTA V Speedruns - I mostly just trust that what was in the WR runs when I started was faster for a reason. But its nice to sometimes double-check the strats and see what makes the game tick in the neverending quest to play the game less and less - it makes me play more and more.

Hey Baron, will you ever do a episode on IRL heists that might have inspired Rockstar? For example, the millennium diamond heist (London, 2000), has a team of robbers use a bulldozer as a tank to steal valuables, and plan, as well as fail, to use a boat to get away (Similar to the Paleto Bay Heist). There's a great documentary on the Metropolitan Police's solving of the crime before it happens on KZbin.

(I posted this on your full speedrun video) That Z Type mission at around the 3 hour mark, that is actually something that happened. Not like in the game but in real life the Z Type is based off one of the most valuable cars on Earth, the Bugatti Atlantic Type 57sc. The story goes, there were 3 built and during WW2 I think it was, the black Bugatti was being transported across Europe on a train. People say the train was bombed or someone stole the Bugatti. But it has never been found, or what's left of it. It's a crazy story for a crazy car. But considering the Z Type in the game is black in the mission and it's stolen I think? But yeah thought it might be cool to know another easter egg I guess in the game.

I hope you talk about the strat I suggested a while ago in Fresh Meat, where you drive away while the enemies get in the getaway car you didn't pick and then blow it up with a sticky (blowing it up before doesn't work, they'll just respawn), and why that strat isn't as effective as the one being used right now.

After Scouting the Port you can leave with a tow truck and bring it to Trevor’s condo you can then get masks in blitz play and drive back in the tow truck

At 4:00 - why not just drive more to the right side with the tow-truck and made a wide turn - that way you will still get some acceleration, and not hit Tonya.

I’m confused, I thought the tow truck spawned at the lot once the first Tonya mission was done? Or does it force start those missions if you get in? Speedrun is not about just one category, and just by watching an 100% run you would already aknowledge some of the strats that differ from classic% (like using Tonya's tow truck or never upgrading your vehicle) Besides from that, great video. I have personally not done them - they are in the 100% speedrun though, nothing super special, mostly just placing sticky bombs where the person will spawn and sometimes stealing a vehicle early from what i remember, but give the 100% run a watch if you are extra curious

On the mission where u first get the bullet in the beginning of the game would it be worth it to hit the bullet into the wall so the passenger door is against the wall from the opposite side u normaly go in so once ur get in lamar will teleport in (sorry for bad explanation)

probably not - NPCs teleporting into cars usually requires a 15 second wait before it happens. the van warp is special because its instant.

Hey, thanks for testing and pointing out my strats, although it doesn't actually work. I'm interested with Fame or Shame shortcut way which slows you down (7:49). I want to inspect it with mods and if there other way possible.

Also for teleporting NPC strat (2:56), note that the van's door can't be broken with any means so make sure not to get stuck because the doors not closing properly.

@@FriendlyBaron Alright so I tested the Fame or Shame strat and from my testing it only slows you down permanently IF you look behind like you did in 8:11. If you didn't look behind to look at Lazlow's car, you won't get the slowdown, but you have to slow down a bit so you didn't fail the mission. I was thinking of Lazlow's car can be used as speed boost just like Franklin and Lamar mission where Lamar car is used for speedboost. However no matter how fast you are (except with mods), Lazlow will always get ahead of you before the train track, where reaching high speed when turning can cause the truck to be uncontrollable. I can provide YT video of me testing it if you don't mind.

About warping Tonya into the tow truck. Now you showed how you slowed down before the intersection as to not go out of range and "abandon" Tonya, resulting in the need to accelerate again. What if you take it slow driving away, and then speed up, so you're driving at full speed when Tonya warps into the tow truck when you are about to be out of range?

good thought but likely no. been awhile since i worked with this, but, your only gonna be saving half a second or so by not slowing down as much at these low speeds, when the strat already lost 1.5 seconds, so it's still gonna be slower. there are sections in other missions where we do try to maintain a lower speed right until the "edge" of something in a similar way that do work
