Its funny watching Jon talking about people not using apostrophes. Im one of those people. There is a reason of course but its not obvious until I explain what I do for a living. Im a programmer. Now way back when, I used to write code for websites. The standard way to output text was to do something like 'Hi there, my names offer0'. As you can see the text I want to show is in single quotes, but if I wanted to put an apostrophe in names (so its name's) I have a problem. We need an escape character or the string is going to be malformed (as itll now be 'Hi there, my name's offer0'

It's from the old days of mechanical typing and it helped distinguish sentences. It wasn't just question marks, it was all sentence closing punctuation; full stops, question marks and exclamation marks.
