In second grade, I remember getting like the first 5 books from the library and the librarian was impressed when I returned them a few days later. What she didn't know is I only read the text on the drawings like they were self-contained comics. I had no idea there was a story until years later.

@@Layla_PlaysGames i remember one time in 5th grade it was the last day of school before winter break and they took us to the library to check out books. Since most kids had left early there were tons of wimpy kid books to choose from! I was so happy that there were so many because my class always went to the library last so they were almost always out of wimpy kid by the time we got there.

The actor who played the new Greg in the 2017 film started at my university in the fall. We all found out about him when he joined at frat and ran for student government. If that's not in character for Greg Heffley, I don't know what is. (Cheese touch smear campaigns were successfully utilized by the opposition party)

Personally, I think Greg, even though he has the traits of a sociopath and is practically a simp, is a decent person. He has done some nice things, for example, he helped Rodrick with his project, salvaged his friendship with Rowley, shared a bond with his dad over a comic, etc. So, in conclusion, Greg ain’t that bad.

Someone describe Greg in the best way possible: "He's either gonna grow up to be a mobster or like one of the main characters on Seinfeld. But either way, people are going to hate him.". Which yeah… come to think of it, I think that’s a shockingly accurate way to describe Greg Heffley, even like a mobster. A good example that comes to mind is Tony Soprano. Now I know people are gonna think that's ridiculous to compare Greg to Tony, but when you look at both characters, there's a lot similar about them both. Both have extremely toxic families, have such a warp perception of what being well-respected amongst their peers means, even coming to some types of epiphanies. Yet when they do attempt to seek for any advice on something that they feel they’ve done wrong, they both end up falling victim to their numerous bad habits and behaviors, either due to external forces or their own misinterpretations of the lessons people try to teach both of them, therefore end up failing on taking any steps to change their ways. Now I also compared Greg to someone in Seinfeld, to which I still stand by as when you do look at both the show and the book series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is basically the anti-young adult novel. To put into perspective before 2007, a lot of the average young-adult or children's literature usually tackled the typical teenage tropes you usually see. This is even something you'll notice on teen sitcoms too. But usually no matter what these teen characters got up to, they often found their way through it, with the help of their friends/family. With their stories ending on a general lesson for us (the audience) could walk away with. But then there's Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Including Greg himself, a lot of the characters are inconsiderate, ignorant, self-centered, narcissistic, or even sociopathic, like on Seinfeld. Almost nobody ever changes, including Greg. The fiascos that either he or his family get themselves in are usually brought about by their own egos and selfishness. And in almost each of the books, they usually don't end with a general life lesson. Yet, I'd argue that was meant to be the point, both the creators of Seinfeld and Wimpy Kid were trying to make. As because each had characters you shouldn't like, it doesn't matter if you don't like them. In fact, it'd be more funny if you didn't. You could say that Diary of Wimpy Kid, is meant to be a satirical look at traditional teen literature of the past. THE ANTI-YOUNG ADULT SERIES.

Great essay! I've read earlier books and the original film trilogy when I was in middle school. I got around rewatching the original trilogy last year, and it's becoming one of my new favourite film trilogies of all time. While I recently bought the first two books, I would probably stopped after the 9th book (as a friend of mine on Instagram suggest me to do so). And while here's how I rank the original film trilogy (don't expect me to watch The Long Haul or the animated Disney+ animated adaptations anytime soon): Roderick Rules > DOAWK > Dog Days

The movies aren’t even bad. You need to be able to separate the two separate media’s. Each Harry Potter book takes place over an entire school year. They aren’t fitting all those details in. Yes do I wish they hadn’t excluded certain things from the movies - sure. But I’m a book loyalist myself, and the books are way better, but movies will never be able to replicate a book. It’s why this new series idea is dumb af. Even if they fit in extra details from the books, it isn’t going to feel the same as before. Like who the fuck wants to see all these iconic characters being played by fucking randoms 10-15 years after the books and movies finished. It’s just a money grab.
