It genuinely astounds me that Colleen Hoover used to be a social worker. You'd think that it would make her more adept when writing about topical issues, but evidently not.

There's definitely people out there who enjoy these possessive, sometimes abusive relationships in FICTION, and that what the "dark romance" books are for. They're for adults who understand that these are not desirable, healthy relationships; and i personally don't like these books, but its admirable how clear and open they are with trigger warnings and such. Coho's books on the other hand....

I’ve just finished watching a 12 hour recap of desperate housewives so calling this 19 minute video “unnecessarily long” feels like an insult. Gimme the 6 hour rough cut!
@vkiran35762 ай бұрын
Hoover's publishers are the dumbest people to exist. If they would just label the books as dark romance and slap on some trigger warning then sooo much controversy would disappear. But these controversies are free marketing which just makes her richer and free to do worse things. This is a perpetual cycle where only the readers are labelled stupid for reading her books and she faces Zero consequences.

apparently there was a Blake lively cut of the movie that was released like 3 weeks prior to the actual movie. and the current movie poster we see right now (the cutsie Blake lively with fun flowers poster) actually replaced the original poster which included both Blake and Justin on the cover with a more somber tone. lots of creative miscommunication in this movie.
@linah19982 ай бұрын
sth that's lesser discussed but imo still problematic in context to how abusive many of her male leads are, is that CoHo is very clearly a pro lifer. Abortion is never an option in her stories and the female protagonists just have to end the book pregnant or with child. I don't really like having misogynistic takes shoved into books like this especially when the right to abortion has taken such an extremely sad fall in recent years. "Verity" is an especially bad example.

I know that there is a lot and, I mean A LOT, to criticise about ugly love and Colleen Hoover and the balls. But what I can’t get past is the lack of basic biological understanding, babies don’t have balls! they descend during puberty. So not only do we have to be subjected to that weird and creepy conversation, it’s literally impossible and something the mother of a boy should know.

Interesting how she said she didn’t address the SA allegations or the inappropriate texts her son sent bc she felt it wasn’t her place to talk abt someone else’s experience. Yet she wrote a book abt her mom’s experiences (I guess hers to an extent as well given what she saw and heard.) I do understand that It Ends With Us was written after he moms death so it’s not like someone who is alive would still be affected by the story being told.

When you look at interviews with Blake and Colleen, you can really tell Blake doesn't care about the source material. The most egregious example is Blake explaining how she forgot about the famous "open heart" tattoo the mc has on her collarbone, so they had to use post production CGI to add it. Colleen politely explains how important the tattoo is to the story and her fans and Blake keeps laughing like they're silly for caring so much.

Always love watching Colleen Hoover slander! I think the reason why I don’t like her is just mainly because I fully believe she prefers quantity over quality. Not to mention, she doesn’t care or put enough thought on her books. And seeing more videos over her books and finding out when it was published shows that she has no improvement over the past twelve years. I saw a tiktok interview and she was asked about why people like it and she said, “I don’t know why people resonate with this book.” Like I’m sorry, but calling her an advocate for dv is far from it. From a cancelled coloring book to nail polish line and going on the market side of the movie to make it look like a romcom, is appalling. I don’t believe she cares about what she writes and treats sensitive topics like DV as nothing and treated like shit. I may write a lot and I find the idea of using trauma and abuse as a plot twist/shock value is the most insensitive and uncreative thing I could think of. Yes, lots of characters have trauma and that’s used as a backstory to help us get more in depth with a character. However, Hoover uses it as a plot twist. I’d rather read something about the MC finding out their sister is their mother. It’s cliched but at least it’s a more creative plot twist than whatever she writes. Plus I also had a feeling her popularity would sort of ended when the movie would come out. It felt like another Fifty Shades of Gray repeat. I used to work as a former bookseller and I think on a daily basis people asked where we keep her books. But, if people like her books that’s okay. I don’t hate the people who read her books, I just hate the person who writes them. TL;DR: I think Colleen Hoover is uncreative and uses sensitive topics as a cash grab if the book has her name on it.

I know this is a case to case thing but I grew up in an abusive household and went to watch this movie as a cutesy girls night out with my girl friends who I've never talked about this, I had to look away and try real hard to not look distressed. Horrible marketing. Also obvious that the people behind it know nothing of abuse because WHY WOULD SHE TELL HER ABUSER SHE'S LEAVING HIM WHILE HE'S HOLDING HER NEWBORN.
@jow27162 ай бұрын
Sometimes adults can behave so much like teenagers, seriously! "I'm angry with you so me and all my friends are unfollowing you on social media and pretending you don't exist during interviews, Ha! That'll teach you!" 🙄 I've had plenty of arguments with colleagues and even some toxic people... yet I've somehow always managed to set my ego aside, do my job and collaborate... Why can't Lively and Baldoni do the same? Now all they managed to do was make people talk about that stupid scandal instead of their movie.
@laltrametadimarco2 ай бұрын
I've read It Ends With Us and I'm impressed by how Colleen Hoover is able to romanticize and speak against abuse at the same time. When you read the book you think Ryle's actions are toxic since the beginning, a foreshadowing of what's to come, but then you read the author's note, and you realize that it's not. She says she sometimes thought of changing some scenes (I assume the violence scenes) because she fell in love with Ryle, when in every scene Ryle is seen as manipulative and/or creepy. (Spoiler) I also hate how in the end he ends up with half the custody for their child: this man is violent, and even in the book is described as something he "can't control" because of his trauma (which does sound like excuses, but alas) so how are you leaving your newborn child with him?? Ps. The scene about the cow shit: he was 18 and she was 15. A minor.

I enjoy fiction books, knowing they are fiction and that in real life it would be problematic. However, DV and real life horrible situations are difficult to enjoy. I believe those types of topics should be handled with careful actions- not releasing a coloring book and having deceiving marketing.
@randomspider725Ай бұрын
Depicting something bad may not be endorsement, but Colleen didn’t put ANY effort into acknowledging that the male leads’ toxic behavior is indeed toxic. All of the characters are either supportive of him/the relationship or they’re villains. Ryle is technically an exception since his abuse is acknowledged, but he’s still given visitation rights to Lily’s baby (in the book)! That’s not responsible! That’s not okay! I once saw a comment that said that Colleen doesn’t try to heal from her traumas but instead normalizes them, and honestly, it explains everything about her writing.
@caitpat96Ай бұрын
Before I went to read It Ends With Us, I saw nothing on BookTok about any themes or topics. I was so triggered and had flashbacks to my own SA when reading the main Lily and Ryle fight… it’s so stupid that these books don’t have trigger warnings of any kind on them!

9:45 i grew up in an abusive household, and not ONCE have i considered publicizing the aspects of those relationships in the form of romance novels. her using that as an excuse is fucking horrific to me. i personally have an issue with colleen hoover because while working as a camp counselor i saw many young girls reading her books, which broke my heart because i know that if they are reading too much of those books they are going to normalize the abuse in them because they are too young to understand. while that is also the parents fault, it’s coleen hoovers too for advertising these stories of abuse as romance novels. when i think of what and who i am looking for in a partner, i am looking for the furthest thing from what i experienced growing up because that shit is terrifying and messed me up for life. the fact that she thinks it’s ok to romanticize those relationships and broadcast them to vulnerable women and girls is disgusting to me and i have no idea why her books are even on the shelves.

I bought three of her books before I realised how bad they were and how bad she was and it wasn’t until two days ago I got rid of them. My mom asked me if I wanted to donate them to a thrift shop and the thought gave me cold feet because I was scared a young girl would pick them up and read them because of me. So I told mom about what they were about and she immediately threw them in the trash while I commented that we should burn them.

I went with my friends and I had to try to keep it together until I got into my car. I broke into a million pieces. I think the way it is portrayed is extremely accurate to the point of it being uncomfortable but to not know what it was it was borderline traumatizing. I am happy the topic is getting awareness and form an art perspective the cinematography was phenomenal. BUT HOLY SHIZ WAS IT A SHOCK TO MY SYSTEM.
