I doubt it. People that have Hollywood stars as their partners are already aware of the things that they need to do to have good PR for their movies. Most likely, it was made up. I have distant family and friends right by the actual Hollywood (Burbank/Toluca Lake) and I really got to know the movie industry a lot better just from my short time staying there. They will do ANYTHING for attention. These people will publicise their relationships, share "secrets" or just straight up make up lies out of thin air to get attention. EG: This movie. It is FREE marketing for people to start "rumors" so that their movies and shows will sell. Don't believe everything these people say and do. They are totally normal people in real life (for the most part :/) but when it's time to sell themselves? They'll bend over backwards to continue to afford their Beverly Hill mansions/condos and their private party lifestyle in the the Hollywood Hills. Like, yikes.

@tedros69173 ай бұрын
I genuinely think there are some very basic things that would have made this movie MUCH more enjoyable. 1 - they should have gotten rid of the first 11 minutes. They could have maybe told it through flashbacks, or if not, just had them have an argument where they both reveal what they thought happened that day. This way the audience would have to wonder what happened until the big reveal. 2 - their backstory is dumb. I think they should have been actual exes. Or at least the incident that they're holding such a grudge over literally TWO YEARS after should have been much bigger (it could have still been a misunderstanding, it should have just had bigger stakes imo). Maybe something like Bea got a call from her ex bf and left to take it, Ben overheard the call and thought she was cheating on her bf with him, Ben asked Bea to leave, rudely, says some mean shit etc, but doesnt say why exactly. So then we leave off with Bea thinking Ben is a really rude person and Ben thinking Bea is a cheater. Maybe they could add that Ben had been cheated on in a previous relationship (maybe the one with the other girl from the wedding) to give more context as to why he didn't give Bea a chance to explain. Idk, this is literally after thinking about it for 30 seconds. 3. I truly think they should have leaned into them being bad people. Bea and Ben are both so insanely petty in this it's hard to justify. But the movie doesn't really want us to think they suck as people, even though they objectively do. They literally can't stfu long enough to not ruin their loved ones wedding. But the movie is trying to make it seem like "they're good people but bring out the worst in each other because they have such passionate feelings." I think this is because writers often think people won't care about a love story if they characters aren't perfect. When in fact, they don't have to be perfect, they just have to be perfectly *matched.* my favourite rom com is 10 things I hate about you. In that movie the 4 leads are all extremely flawed individuals. Kat is a menace and at times uneccesarily mean, Patrick is terrifying, Bianca is unempathetic, Cameron is conniving. But they match very well. In anyone but you the characters are at each other's throats in a way what is really quite mean (especially Ben). I think they actually should have leaned into this more. They could have bonded over being mean to each other, begrudgingly having to admit that the other person was funny. Maybe they bond over gossiping about someone else. Maybe they find some other jerk to make fun of (they could have made the ex fiance a really shitty person and had them come together over making his life hell). I don't really know or care, my only point is I don't need to think the characters are good people. 4. I know I mention bea's x in the above points, but I actually fully agree with you that they should have comeptlely written him out. I think they could have just left him as an off screen presence, but if they had to bring him in, I think he should have been a villain
@LilShopofAli3 ай бұрын
Completely agree. They were being extremely selfish over a very dumb misunderstanding, but no one really calls them out for being selfish or ridiculous. I also think they should have slept together or at least kissed, the fact that that doesn’t even happen makes their grudge towards each other even more absurd to me.

What I liked about this movie and the scene that sticks out to my brain was when she sang his favorite song to distract him from the fear of heights. That right there felt like accurate pay off for something set up earlier (the song on the plane) and it showed she was paying attention to him. If the whole movie had been stuff like that, showing two leads who hate each other but can’t stop noticing things about one another, and they leaned more into the plot of “she doesn’t Want to be a lawyer”, with him taking at least a more sympathetic approach, it would have been at least a better movie. But we don’t even know what she wants to do! She’s aimless in a way that reminds me of the main character in You’ve Got Mail: okay, sure, she got her man, and now what? Who is SHE as a person? Imo if they wanted stakes for her, she should have already been a lawyer who doesn’t Want to be one anymore. Her ex, if they wanted to keep him in so badly, should have been the “safety” guy who says it’d be a bad idea to waste so many years, and Glenn’s character should have been the guy who showed her she Can have a good life if she chases after what she wants instead of what she thinks she should be. A 20yr old from a rich family can easily go to a new college. A 30smth year old woman with a career and bills to pay would have had more to think through.

Like About Time, or About a Boy, like yes give them to me, but now it's like every film is trying so hard to please everyone that it pleases no one. Darling, I came of age when Totally Spy was on TV and Tatu's "All the things she said" came out, I never stood a chance 🤣. BUT that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a hetrosexual romance, like I don't want to be turned on in every movie or see some insufferable girl boss, I want that sweet sweet dopamine hit after seeing both characters learn to love themselves and then find what they are looking for in each other. Now every character is written as a hot political statement on whatever Hollywood thinks makes people happy, and it has ruined my rom-coms.

Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado have SO much charm. They sling barbs incredibly quickly (never going too far, notably) then pull back and stare into each others eyes and run off. There's a whole plot point that they would do anything for each other. Not to mention, there's no past lovers interfering with their relationship. To write an incredibly generic romcom and pretend it was based on Much Ado without including any of the things that make Beatrice and Benedick so romantic (incredible verbal dexterity and a total focus on their relationship without outside components) is so annoying.

The line “She’s a nothing,” bothers me so much because 1. That’s just awkward writing and 2. It’s obviously a reference to the “source material” but in Shakespeare’s day, “nothing” was slang for women’s genitals and “thing” was slang for men’s. And, for people who know Shakespeare plays kinda well - let alone those who ADAPT them - this is pretty standard knowledge. Just a testament to how misguided this adaption is.

Girlie spends half of the movie talking about how much of a disaster she is and then gets mad when someone agrees and that's the foundation of their hatred? Lazy lazy Awful scrip, awful writing. I feel like Hitman, which Glen Powell stars in, was a better comedy than Anyone but You, but it wasn't as heavily marketed. It had better chemistry, and it was a lot more funny. Also the whole scandal of Glen and Sydney hooking up, was weird like her fiance and herself were producers it was clear it was juat marketing and looking back on it I think they knew the film wasn't great but they needed the money to make a profit which makes sense why they came up with a whole scandal. Tho knowing they were Glen's boss, it gives a power imbalance, and he has said it was all Sydney's idea and it shows. She was very much pushing it in the premier.

I completely agree, I can’t believe people actually fell for that, it was so obviously a marketing ploy.

Always enjoy your videos! I tried to watch this movie on an airplane and had to turn it off about halfway through. Very underwhelming and with characters that were underbaked. They definitely needed to do tweaking. I also agree about the note with Sydney Sweeney not being right for this romcom. Glen Powell has another romcom on Netflix with Lucy Lui and Taye Diggs that hits the satisfying beats that a rom com should.

My moms friend took us to watch this in the theatre and as soon as it ended she apologized to all of us saying it was one of the worst movies she's ever seen, and I couldn't agree more. At so many points the movie is so stupid it is deeply frustrating to watch. From what I've seen both leads are good actors but their chemistry is nonexistent. Sydney especially feels miscast. Bea's character feels designed after other rom coms, disillusioned/cynical/witty, ambitious cool girl etc.(more Sandra Bullock in The proposal) While Sydney has had great performances in more dramatic shows/movies the comedy here fell flat and she felt like a black hole of charisma.

About what you said at the end in regards to romance films where characters are brought together as a result of an affair - in the mood for love is probably one of the best examples out there. It’s beautifully shot and heartbreaking

for me this movie lacked the quality of feeling really attached to the protagonists. it had a lifeless quality, before even going into depth about why.

I want the people who write these types of scripts to act them out, maybe they will have some sort of awakening and realize how bad they are at writing, and how out of touch with reality.

Rom coms and romance absolutely work in the west, tf are you saying? 💀 I agree they need to learn from kdramas, but just because we’ve had a slew of mediocre movies from mediocre writers and directors doesn’t mean that romance movies “don’t work” in the West anymore. that’s so dumb lol

One issue with hiring too good looking actors, is they can't sell the part that is obviously not written for them. Form the dialogue that Sydneys character has in the bathroom, it comes across if the idea is, this is someone that is not used to getting hit on, and thus, find the man and the situation intriguing, because she believes that he was hitting on her, and that is something new to her. And sure there are stunningly looking people that aren't self confident. But it is not believable that Sydneys character looking as she does, has never been in a situation that she would have felt someone was hitting on her, even if she had not been self confident. You would also have to make it clear that Ben did not actually hit on her, but that something she said, or something she was wearing, made him ask her out, when she asked, as the thought she was being hit on. And is his mother comes up later, it could have been something, she had said or liked, that is referenced in that situation, but later in the movie comes up as the actual reason he asked her out. For her it was the exciting thing about getting asked out, despite the age difference. And for him, it was giving her a chance, because of something relating to his mother, even though he did not hit on her or had any plan to ask her out. But then, yes there would have to be something during the date telling them both, that perhaps there could be something real there. The issue though, is that you still need them to reconnect. It doesn't matter how good the date was, if he was exciting to her, as the first guy (she thinks) to ask her out, and to him, as her as a potential serious relationship. And that it what should have happened after the bar scene. But ending in them breaking up again. Possibly we would need a third breakup before it would be believable that there was something between them, that they did not (want) to see, that would then blossom during the wedding. Her not knowing about his fear of flying, and listening to a specific song to calm him down, would not necessarily had come up, so that part was fine. Except for is to took his cookie, he would have noticed that it was gone. Unless you show the flight crew collecting trash. But I would have probably also had it be significant, something he was teasing with her, that she really liked that he got free for sitting in first class. Ok so it wasn't her family that bankrolled the wedding. But then you actually have some reason for her family to be bothered with her having a change of heart, and not having a plan to get a job. The only thing I appreciated with the film, was that at least Ben was working out. There are way to many films and TV-series today, where the male lead is really fit, but doesn't do sport, show no interest in working out. At least with unrealistic beauty standards for women, they can often be explained away with good genes, and eating small portions (on average). But when a character, and it is mostly male, but some female characters as well, are extremely fit, in such a way that they have to work out almost daily, and for several hours, it doesn't make sense if the character show no interest in that.

After watching this movie, I did not get the hype. I don’t think it was the worst film, but I can’t stand “i am saying the joke. Isn’t that funny” humor that people do to show self-awareness and make fun of certain tropes. It is what annoyed me about the Barbie movie as well. I wasn’t a big fan of the writing and most of the jokes went on for too long and there was a lot of exposition. I can see what it was a relief for people because Sydney Sweeny was right, people want rom Coms and want to have laughs. This particular one just didn’t work for me.

THANK YOU! this is the first time I’ve found someone who also wasn’t that much of a fan of it 😓 like one thing that annoyed me is that they were just being so annoying like they’re taking like a lot of the attention off of the couple that’s actually get married I always hate movies that have the main characters pretty much stealing the show when it’s someone else’s wedding bcuz like it’s meant to be the happiest day of someone’s life and people who’s supposed to help make it great are just taking the attention off of you but that was my biggest pet peeve in the movie but I totally agree will all the point you made bcuz it WAS really cheesy and fake

They could tie the whole fboy thing be tied to the Bea coming to his and Pete's apartment and finding a woman's pair of underwear in the living room of something while they're cuddling and he hadn't explained he has a roommate. Pete's latest fling left it there, there's a giant fallout and they both say thing that are hurtful and Bea storms out.

18:00 and did anybody else wonder why that same boat couldn't have just turned around and fished them out? How did they SOMEHOW end up in water that was too shallow for the boat and required a HELICOPTER?? No dingy or rowboat, they called in the CHOPPER... The people in their boat noticed within 30 seconds of them falling in, and it looks relatively small and nimble. They should have been able to tread water for 5 minutes and get rescued by their own boat.
