- PLOT TWIST - In TROS, Rey hands this lightsaber to Leia (after having trained with it for a bit) and says "I'll earn your brother's saber one day". A couple of complications from this. 1) Rey 'gives it back' to Leia. So Rey doesn't own it. Leia does? 2) Rey refers to it as "YOUR BROTHER'S" saber. 3) My brain hurts.

StarWars IRL Also at the end of TROS, she buries the saber as well as Leia's personal saber and dawns a new yellow saber which would now be considered hers since she most likely constructed it herself. As such, Since Luke only trained with that saber and built his own and Obi-Wan only ever held onto it, and now that Rey has her personal saber I say the ownership reverts back to Anakin since no one is currently using it and he built it.

It's Anakin's lightsaber. He made it, and Obi-wan took it from him after defeating him in combat. Palpatine dubbed him "Darth Vader," after saving his life. Most, if not all, Sith Lords assumed a new name when they embraced the Dark Side, but Anakin remained despite what he (Vader) called himself. Luke made his own lightsaber as part of becoming a Jedi Knight. Rey Palpatine made her own weapon, even though Disney Star Wars (legal) is not canon.

The issue with this is that we have to take star wars lore into consideration, which means that the lightsaber, no matter who has it, still belongs to the being who imbued it with the force. Just because a person uses it doesn't mean it belongs to them since we've seen in multiple stories that a person who takes a lightsaber from, say, a sith tomb, could be possessed by the sith spirit since the lightsaber is imbued with apart of the spirit. Its why Luke's lightsaber was never Anakins, it was the green lightsaber he himself built, and I'd like to point out something else, a very important detail that people tend to ignore where even in the OT, it was considered Anakin's lightsaber, and that's when Obi Wan gave the lightsaber to Luke, where he said "This is your fathers ligthsaber." Right there, it shows that, even though Kinobe had possession of it, he still considered it Anakins since that's the ideology of the Jedi. So because of these, I have to say it has always been and will always be Anakins lightsaber, and that, until Rey builds her own, she technically doesn't have an actual lightsaber of her own.

From my perspective, it will always be Anakin's lightsaber because it is a historical artifact. If a museum is currently in ownership of George Washington's Sword, it's still refered to as George Washington's Sword. That was his sword, regardless of who currently owns it. Yeah the video does not really make sense on that point. If I buy a car and 3 years later I decide to give myself a cool new nickname, does that mean that I stole my own car? No, its still mine. The mistake in the video is to assume that Darth Vader and Anakin are 2 different persons. What explanation would have made sense is that Anakin was pronounced dead not long after he fully became Darth Vader (with his armor) so that Vader's real identity would stay hidden. Also, based on law, it would not be Rey's lightsaber. He must have forgotten that in episode 6, We see Anakin come back to his senses and "kill" the emperor. With that, we see that Anakin was never really dead, therefore, Obi Wan stole it on Mustufar, giving his act as guardian until Luke came of age no legal justification. Therefore, It was never Luke's, and never "lost" by its owner, leaving it to still be the possession of Anakin Skywalker.

This shouldn’t be a question, it’s Anakin’s lightsaber…even LucasFilm acknowledge this when they have Rey bury it and build her own. That lightsaber was never Rey’s, a case for Luke can be made but it still doesn’t ring true because ANH (the first Star Wars movie ever) literally refers to it as “your fathers lightsaber” it’s Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber. Rey saying *“I’ll earn your brother saber one day”* doesn’t mean it’s Luke’s, it just means she doesn’t know the full story of the lightsaber in question. Legally Anikan Skywalker is not dead until the end of episode 6. Changing your name isn't a legal death. Meaning Obi-wan STOLE Anikan's lightsaber and then gave it to Luke. At this point in time it is still Darth Vader's property until it is salvaged and the appropriate amount of time has passed for legal transfer of unclaimed property. Make those corrections and then take into account known laws of the old republic, the empire, and the new republic and you will have a complete record of ownership.

Actually Rey buries the lightsaber in the sand and it sunk in it. Therefore it became the whole skywalkers family lightsaber because we see Luke and Leila as force ghosts in there and it only makes sense that Anakin is now the owner as well because that was his new home when he came back to help his mom. Actually the republic and the Jedi order were different entities, this is why order 66 could have happened. Neither side owned the other. Also Jedi didn’t have to be celibate. And in a sense this is a similar law about how being a sith wasn’t illegal. Under the republics rule, which I believe all Jedi were citizens of the republic, it is of course legal to have children and be married. Under the Jedi’s rule, u cannot. When Anakin fought Obi-Wan he was no longer Anakin, he was Darth Vader, therefore as the video states, he is not in ownership of the lightsaber.

Obi-Wan committed aggravated assault causing bodily dismemberment, and then proceeded to loot Anakins lightsaber which he then kept for years before illegally handing it off to Luke. While Rey may be the owner of the lightsaber, it is not "Rey's Lightsaber." Anakin bonded with the Kyber crystal and built it himself, therefore it is Anakin's. Luke uses it in the OT but even then, it is not "his", as we see him with his own custom green lightsaber in Return of the Jedi. He bonded with that green Kyber crystal and built the lightsaber, thus making it "Luke's Lightsaber." I know this video was made before Rise of Skywalker, but especially now after it came out and we see what eventually happens with Rey, we know the lightsaber mentioned in the video is not "hers," as she is seen with her own custom yellow lightsaber in the end.

LUke did build his own Lightsaber, using instruction from Obi Wan. While it’s a similar model, you can clearly see that they are different hilts

The only person in this debate that the lightsaber cannot be is Anakin's because Anakin's lightsaber was lost in Cloud City when Luke's hand got cut off that lightsaber was never recovered the lightsaber in the sequel Trilogy is the one that Luke constructed after Star Wars V between Star Wars 6
