This is really interesting. Star wars has so many classic or theatre actors like this guy and the Obi Wan in the OT. They seem like a different class of actors, and i don't see their career really blowing up. I never even thought about how good Palpatine really was in the star wars movies, thinking he was just bland evil dude, but the performance took that old trope and gave it HOOTSPA. I guess the more impressive a talent is honed, the more subtle details of their expertise is lost on films.

After a long surgical process, from which in the end Anakin comes out relying on technology even to breathe or speak, he tries to move and talk as a way to express himself and cope with his own pain, but only articulates as a clumsy automaton. There’s no real emotion in his voice anymore. He’s trapped within his new body and can’t let out his emotions as before. What I find so fantastic about the character of Palpatine is the flawless depiction of a narcissist/psychopath. Modern stories tend to prefer having complex villains who have tragic back stories that lead them to being evil, and I think this reflects our "humans are mostly good" philosophy. -Nobody chooses to be evil. I have dealt with a number of these types of personalities in my life. When somebody is willing to completely destroy another person's reputation, self-esteem, or even life for a slight edge on a fleeting desire, you can't call that anything less than evil. Palpatine doesn't care how many innocent lives he has to kill, torture, or send through hell, so long as it gets him what he wants, he will sacrifice the entire galaxy. Ian McDirmid portrays this character trait perfectly. Smooth, soft, gentle, and seemingly compassionate until it is too late. Then uncontrollable laughing from his inevitable victory.

My favorite part of the opera scene is Ian's silent contemplation for a second after Anakin says, "The Sith rely on their passion for their strength. They think inward, only about themselves." In later viewings you can get the sense he's putting the strings together. Not only does Palpatine have the art of camp, if you read the novels, he's the master of the art of trolling. Seriously, the many KZbinrs that are on Fanalysis have said that if he dropped all pretense then he'd be exactly like the robot chicken version of Palpatine. In the original Clone Wars, he constantly trolls everyone around him during the Battle of Coruscant (including Grevious who he had personally sent to the planet) which is made even weirder if you read Labyrinth of Evil where minutes before, he came running out of an elevator throwing aside his Sith robes after coming up from the basement where he killed some clones and an agent as Darth Sidious... 14:28 Also two things I'd like to say about this scene are: 1) The performance they watch is the same one Palpatine and Plagueis watched on the night Palpatine was talking about (with Plagueis getting incredibly drunk). 2) The chapter in Revenge of the Sith novel describes his smile as "a gentle smile of wisdom" despite how we all know how it looks.
@rickblaine96705 жыл бұрын
The novel made Palpatine's evil far less evident, I guess in order for Anakin's fall to be more believable (mission accomplished). I mean, in the movie, he is BLATANTLY evil all the time (not for McDiarmid's fault, but the dialogues are what they are, as the video says). In the novel, on the contrary, his conversations with Anakin almost remember me of Dumbledore's conversations with Harry Potter in the HP's novels. Except that this Dumbledore is evil and is subtly corrupting the victim's soul. P.S. Which means that Palpatine is basically Dumbledore's wisdom and knowledge combined with Voldemort's lust for power and evil nature. Which is... pretty terrifying if you think about it.
@Jedi_Spartan5 жыл бұрын
@@rickblaine9670 yeah, some of his lines flip between the two positions in the novelisation, there's even a line where he offers CORELIA to Anakin (and he says either the planet or the system) and he basically says 'come on everybody let's do it' during the novel's version of his speech for establishment of the Galactic Empire.
@rickblaine96705 жыл бұрын

It's also the first Star Wars anything that didn't include the dialogue crawl that I've seen. It was the best thing Disney has done yes but when you add something like a ship that can cut a Star Destroyer in half you should probably explain why we never see it again. At least we know why we don't see Snowspeeders twice because the AT AT on Endor isn't in the battle and the speeders would likely hit the trees. after thinking about it for a bit i kinda agree. at first it just seemed like a dumb throwaway line, but it really does reflect the feelings against the jedi that have been building up in anakin over time. the way they kept mistreating him (in his eyes) led to him fully seeing them as evil, his morals were totally messed up

Biggest issue with the Prequels is dialogue Honestly, if Lucas had hired another writer to help him the prequels could have been amazing Hell, if Jar Jar had better dialogue he could've been a fan favorite George knows how to write a story, but his dialogue writing is subpar You can even see it in the original trilogy, but less so, and i assume thats because George was younger and was more familiar with how younger people talk, but a lot of OT lines are corny, but the structure of all the films are good, even great

Also, George had a LOT of oversight on the original trilogy, and people like Kasdan who I don't doubt made a huge difference when it came to dialogue. Plus, in behind the scenes moments, almost all the actors admit telling George on occasions that they refuse to read certain lines - quote Harrison Ford - "You can write this stuff George but you sure as hell can't say it"

Lucas is being humble when he says he can't write dialogue. He actually can, watch American Graffiti. With the prequels, he wanted the dialogue to reflect the 30s space adventures he grew up with, he wanted it to feel like it's an older time, a galaxy far far away. Honestly, people really just focus on one or two lines but there are lines that are so epic that only Lucas could have thought of them. The dialogue scene between Anakin and Palps in the theater is next to Darth Vader's reveal as the most brilliant exchange of dialogue in the saga. The lines when Obi interrogates Jango in AOTC is absolutely filled with tension. We have lines like, "Good, twice the pride, double the fall" "The ability to speak, doesn't make one intelligent" "Your focus determines your reality" and many more more.
@Gibbypastrami5 жыл бұрын
@@kwameadu0075 well yeah, Lucas knows the characters and knows what story hes telling, of course theres going to be some banger lines But pretty much anything out of Jar Jars mouth, and any dialogue between Padme and Anakin was cringe

Vader’s transformation was a great scene. Vader’s “noooo” was essentially the last form of compassion Vader ever shows on screen. It showed us that even tho he was this dark lord as we know him to be, he still loved his wife deeply and that the entire reason he joined the dark side to begin with basically fails right in front of him. If the scene was quiet, as you said it should’ve been, it would’ve been more awkward than emotional. Using the force to convey his grief and sadness was effective but we never heard Vader yell in pure heart break before and we still haven’t since. Besides cruel and threatening lines, or him explaining the force or calling Luke his son, Vader is essentially this emotionless dark lord of the sith who is in his own right extremely menacing; but like the comics and this scene here, this gives him a human side away from his twisted and more robotic self reminding us that under all of the armor and hatred, he still did and always will love his wife. Yes the dialogue in some places if you analyze it is a bit clunky and awkward, but I feel like here you ripped it apart a little too much 🤷🏾♂️ just my opinion

i didnt see obi-wan as being cowardly. he didnt want to kill his "brother" as he put it prior; despite his duty he "loved anakin like a brother" and couldnt bring himself to do it. in a way it was more cruel what he did, though he didnt know palpatines capabilities. to let him suffer and then be turned into the true darth vader could be said to be a worse fate than if he had just killed him outright. obi-wan wasn't much older or more experienced than anakin; that shouldnt be over looked.

Palpatine used a force ability known as force scream, which amplified his abilities while momentarily throwing off the Jedi's connection to the force. Doing so allowed Palpatine to kill Agen Kolar and Saessee Tiin before they could react to him.
