Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life... He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. It's ironic he could save others from death, but not himself.

This actually is my favorite opening of all of the Star Wars films, and you also missed one really key portion - John Williams's Battle over Coruscant is absolutely my favorite opening scene music. Those taiko drums! (I hate that they're not in the soundtrack). The Force theme backed with a militaristic drum beat! But yes, this scene does so much to build/show the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin (and Palpatine), plus has several of my favorite lines (you forgot "Another happy landing" ;) ). In some ways the AOTC elevator scene also does what it needs to do in that it shows how stiff/awkward Anakin and Obi-Wan still are with each other...I think really it was the Clone Wars that brought them together. Also, I love love love the way this scene is written in the prologue to the Revenge of the Sith novelization. I tear up every time I read it - it captures the hope and the tragedy of the movie so well: "A pair of starfighters. Jedi starfighters. Only two. Two is enough. Two is enough because the adults are wrong, and their younglings are right. Though this is the end of the age of heroes, it has saved its best for last."

I do love Revenge of the Sith more than the other prequels. I could tell from the first 10 minutes in the theater how much better it was in its urgency, dialogue, special effects, story, lighting, setting, etc. as if Lucas had to tell episodes 1-2 to get to the bulk of the story that he really wanted to tell in episode 3. However, I do remember being initially disappointed with the ROTS opening space battle for the first few years of viewing. Us OT fans were used to SW space battles being about the battle itself (who would win or lose) as well as the rebel pilots and support ship characters playing good roles where the human element was always key. But the opening battle of ROTS highlighted a problem of all the prequels, which was (1) graphics over people, (2) battles over story. The space battles in episode 4 and 6 at least had that human element and importance to them that Episode 3’s didn’t. However, given enough time, I started to realize that this was not the focus of the ROTS battle. (1) The focus was supposed to just be on Obi Wan and Anakin and their mission, set within the context of the larger battle around them. Once I realized that, I could then appreciate the dazzling graphics and epic setting of the battle within which the opening crawl tells us specifically that these two jedi knights are carving their way through on a mission of utmost importance to rescue the chancellor. (2) I eventually also realized that the “meaninglessness” of the battle that I once disliked was also the point. Palpatine had created a fictional war, fought by two great armies of characters who were totally disposable (clones and droids) so that he could get emergency powers, weaken the Jedi, weaken any other powers, then destroy the Jedi, and take over as the empire. The war was supposed to look meaningless, and the battle was just a ploy for Palpatine to get “captured” to lure Anakin in to take out Dooku and come closer to the dark side. It was a glorious battle in scope and wanton destruction, and that was indeed the point. Plus, years of clone wars tv episodes later on showed us that the opening of ROTS was indeed the closest the SW movies would get to recreating the awesome action of the clone wars tv series, and the opening ROTS battle and mission did just that, incredibly well. So while I initially didn’t like several big factors about the opening space battle, I also know that they were of my own doing: I had wanted the battles to be a certain way and focus on certain things, rather than enjoying them for what they were, and trying to understand what they were trying to do all along. So with a few years to sort that out (time to be able to get rid of my preconceptions and misconceptions) and finally just enjoy it for what it is and was meant to be, I then started to really love it about 5+ years after. I say all this to make a point. I bet there are people who have watched the sequel trilogy wanting certain things to happen with the legacy characters, or expecting certain things in the story to have happened because of the legends books or their own preconceived notions, people who may have come away disappointed. But just as time helped me to eventually abandon my preconceptions and objections to the ROTS opening battle, to go from being disappointed by big aspects of it to now totally loving it, perhaps there will be some who do the same thing with aspects of the sequels. Now time doesn’t heal all wounds. There are still things I dislike about the prequels, 20 years later. More time and a change of mind won’t solve them, ever (certain casting decisions, acting, dialogue, etc of the prequels are still an issue to me 15-20 years later). But some things can indeed change. You never know. It’s up to us to keep an open mind and see if the movies themselves don’t change, but maybe we-our preconceptions and misperceptions-possibly do. Who knows. Also, I have always loved the ROTS Dooku-Obi Wan-Anakin duel. To me it felt like the most classic OT style duel of the prequels. It looked way better than their first fight in AOTC. Dooku looked more believable here than in AOTC with the cgi face on a stunt double looking way better here in ROTS. The lighting, fighting, and setting felt more like classic OT, and the banter between Dooku and Anakin felt more like the OT banter during light saber fights. Loved it right then in theaters, and love it still today. Great video, by the way!
@spoonman734 жыл бұрын
You make some good points but the Sequels fucking suck. Period. Kathleen Kennedy and the other clowns at Disney purposefully sabotaged them. In fact, the only reason the prequels look decent now is because of the all time low the franchise has sunk to.

I’m just surprised, really surprised, that people could be ok with the sequel trilogy being made by anyone other than George. That’s my #1 issue. I couldn’t imagine the ending and final book of “A series of unfortunate events”, or “Harry Potter”, or “Lord of the Rings”, or “Game of Thrones” being made by anyone than their authors...Could you imagine if Rowling sold the rights to “Harry Potter” at her 6th book and was like you guys make up whatever ending you want abandon my notes if you want...!???? The REAL fans could never stand for that and how could they??? But when it comes to Star Wars nobody cares. The sequel Trilogy is not Star Wars and NEVER will be for that reason. It is legal fanfiction ONLY. So it doesn’t matter how actually good or bad the movie are. Now there are some notable exceptions, Rogue one is Star Wars 😁 and so is the mandalorian.

Anakin trilogy is actually a great name especially if we get new Star Wars trilogies. Just Sequal, Prequal and Original wouldn't cut it at that point. So Rey, Anakin and Luke trilogies do make sense (ok, Original still works actually but it would break the theme). Imagine a Revan trilogy of movies being added as a fourth trilogy in the future made by people who understand and respect Star Wars and Revan.
@rdowg5 жыл бұрын
@@bep935 that's only really in retrospect, Lucas has done a lot of really weird and dumb changes to the OT, because if you rewatch the OT, it's hardly about Anakin whatsoever. Sure, he throws sideous down a shaft at the end and is redeemed, but the whole trilogy was about Luke and his adventures, not Vader skulking around with a choking fetish until the last 30-40 minutes of an entire movie trilogy. If the "chosen one" bullshit wasnt just slapped onto the prequels like a wet towel, only the PT movies would be about anakin and the jedi, the OT about luke and co. , and the ST movies would be about space Jesus and her entourage of idiots.
