The body has its own pain relief system that gets activated when experiencing pain.
.
As a painful stimulus ascends to the cerebral cortex (to become consciously aware of the pain) it sends signals to multiple other areas of the brain. This includes:
- Amygdala (emotion)
- Hypothalamus (flight/fight response)
- Reticular formation (arousal and consciousness)
.
1️⃣All of these regions, including the cortex, will send a signal to the
2️⃣Magnus Raphe Nucleus (located at the midline of the medulla) and will
3️⃣Send a serotonergic signal to the spinal cord
4️⃣Stimulate a neuron in the spinal cord that releases Enkaphalin (opioid)
5️⃣Enkephalin will bind to opioid receptors (delta opioid receptors) of both the pre- and post- synaptic pain neuron.
6️⃣Stopping the pain signal!!

Well explained video! It makes me also think of the fear-pain-cyclus. Where fear for pain, leads to tention which causes more pain. And this pain leads to more fear, and so on.

Very educational, thank you! Wanted to know a bit more about pain relief since my cat bit me at the vet the other day. Got me thinking, if serotonin and opioids are released for pain relief that could possibly explain why some people with depression cut themselves.

When we are experiencing a lot of pain it's easy to think that our endogenous pain relief isn't doing very much but I had ABGs taken shortly after giving birth and couldn't feel anything more than a slight nudging at my wrist, so something was working.

Great lecture. Does this activation of the analgesic pathway by pain in one area of the body provide some body-wide analgesia? Or is it more focused than that? I've noticed when I eat pepper the mild burn in my mouth will stop a mild headache. Thanks

In my experience, getting whipped is like taking a high dose of xanax, except you don't feel foggy, just kinda clear afterwards. And yeah, whole body. Obviously hard to OD or get addicted, it's exquisitely painful and thus only really an emergency fix.

@@spiritlevelstudiosi guess you're new to the world. That's how it works. Injury causes the body to release opioids it produces to counteract the pain. But if methods that just cause pain, without real injury are used, such as e.g. wide belts, you just get the opioids in exchange for brief, intense pain. It's pretty funny, because e.g. religious ascetics sometimes whip themselves on a faith basis. In essence and in effect, what they're doing is not much different than chewing down on some oxy pills. Still, it's impressive, because inflicting serious enough pain on yourself to trigger the opioid release is not easy, at all.
