When you busted out the SMD removal alloy, I thought finally someone made a good tutorial on how to replace a DS thumbstick I can recommend to people. But then it went downhill from there. I am too lazy to make a video and don't have a PS5 but If you would like to have the definitive best guide for DS thumbstick replacement on youtube, you have all the tools, you just need to follow these steps: Ditch the hot air gun, too expensive, someone looking to repair their first controller isn't going to want spend that much money. Add flux to the joints like you did, then add the SMD alloy but keep the soldering iron on the joint and wiggle it back and forth until the alloy is thoroughly mixed with the existing solder. Then once you have it mixed well with all the joints, rotate around taking turns heating all the joints with the iron until they are all simultaneously molten and you can pull the stick out. After you have removed the old stick, you have the clean up the SMD removal alloy as it will seriously weaken the new solder joints. You had the right idea with the solder wick, but you needed to apply flux before using the wick. Also you should cut off a small section of the wick and hold it with some tweezers otherwise your entire spool of solder wick is acting like one big copper heatsink and preventing you from transferring heat to the board. After you got the new stick in place, you did a pretty good job soldering everything. Technically the four joints for the housing weren't soldered properly, they have more thermal mass than the rest of the joints so they needed to be heated longer. But this is nitpicking. If you have made it this far, you have already created by far the best and most inexpensive video tutorial for replacing a DS thumbstick on youtube. EDIT: After watching your newer potentiometer replacement video it seems like some of this information may now be redundant as you seem to have more soldering experience. However if you decide to make a video showing how you can remove a thumbstick using only SMD removal alloy and a soldering iron, hopefully some of it is still helpful.

What soldering iron is best to do these repairs?
@2205karl Жыл бұрын
I've literally bought a heat gun because the iron I was using is a 100w, and it damaged the board, that costs me more in the long run, my sucking tool is rubbish so I'm going for the heat approach with plenty of flux.

Plenty of errors in this video, great to see and call them out. you have to clean those holes of solder! you got a few done, just keep going and get the rest. You can test it before putting it all back together too, by plugging in the battery then usb-c cable. Someone will correct me and comment on the gamepad tester website that shows the analogue sticks reading visually. When soldering it in, you must be very sure to be flush with the board, or else you wont be able to put the controller back together or youll get a lot of rubbing on the controller case. I think you just bought a new controller to use at the end of the clip

35 years as a prototype electronics engineer and that desoldering was probably the worst I’ve ever seen as a tutorial, you seriously need to learn to solder properly before you preach to others, your heat gun was clearly not hot enough for lead free solder that is on these PCB’s so solder wick would have been a better substitute, you had no clue on where or how to use the solder sucker, and re soldering the stick controller and potentiometer you might just as well have wrapped silver foil around the joints for all the good you managed…!!! Based on what you tried to teach others to do was about as much use as an ash tray on a motor bike, may I suggest you don’t show people how to solder…..anything!!!!!

You edited out too much. I was hoping I could use this as a tutorial and do what you did, but I had a hard time figuring out how to remove the black battery tray because you showed it just lifting out, and then you showed the PCB just lifting out without detaching the haptic vibrating things, so at this point you're skipping steps and I'm confident that this is merely a showcase and not a good resource for actual information. Thankfully someone else in the comments gave some very useful soldering tips I can remember for when I do find a decent guide.
