I use a hotair rework station. You can get them on Amazon. It has a hot air gun and a soldering iron which are temp and airflow adjustable.

Amazing skills! I accidently removed the left stick ribbon cable connector from the PCB :(. I tried to simply put it back in place but the left stick is not working anymore (there seems to be a lot if pins to align correctly within the connector). Do you happen to know if those ribbon cable connectors are also soldered to the motherboard? I can't believe I removed it so easily. Too bad I live in France, I wish you would repair my controller!

hey, great vid! I was wondering if the thumb stick would need to be calibrated after you make the swap, and if that would be done physically or by software. also what was the liquid you used to clean the pcb after you were done?

No calibration needed. I use isopropyl alcohol to clean the board.

I replaced my sticks on my controller, but my right stick won't reach full outer range when it's all fit back together. If I take off the trim ring around the joystick, it reaches just fine. I've replaced the joystick cap and the trim ring and it's the same thing. Any idea what's going on here?

Try using some flux and melt some leaded solder into the factory solder. That should lower the melting temp of the unleaded solder they use.

power of having great tools, I destroyed my controller using cheap solder gun. No hot air gun. Torn a trace off

I have messed up traces even with good tools. Remember to mix leaded with the factory non leaded solder so it lowers the melting temp.

@@dackselectronicrepair If you were to apply low melt solder onto it before using the heat gun, would it be at a different temp or the same?
@dackselectronicrepair6 ай бұрын
@@OKBUDDY21 Yes you can try that for sure. If you flux it and melt leaded solder it should melt at a lower temp on the hot air.

Is there a place i can take my controller into and they can do this for me?
@dackselectronicrepair8 ай бұрын
I would think any place that repairs phones and computers would be able to do this. The problem you may run into is that it will cost more to have them do it then just getting a new controller!

I've done this 4 times, two were successful, and the other two I ended up melting the underside of the analog stick...what am I doing wrong?
@dackselectronicrepair3 ай бұрын
It really is a time sensitive repair. You have to get all solder in all the legs heated up at the same time so you can basically just drop the new stick into place and remove the heat right away. If you leave the hot air going for too long after you put the new stick in place you will melt the underside of it. A little melting won't hurt anything but too much will make it not work.
@Meesaa0611 ай бұрын
can you please post a link of the hot air gun you used ? i wanna buy it too. thanks

Could the cause of the stick drift problem come from dirt buildup? That controller was absolutely filthy.
@dackselectronicrepair Жыл бұрын
Not in this case but I suppose dirt could cause drift issues. However, it would be hard for it to get into the actual joystick as the the thumbstick covers mushroom over the mechanism which keeps almost all dirt out of it.

Not sure what is going on. It could be the charging port or the battery. It is also possible the motherboard is bad and in that case you would just need to get a new one.
