Comparing the Analog.man King of Tone with the Klon Centaur in a light overdrive setting with my Custom Shop Stratocaster into a Fender Deluxe Reverb (1966). I have added my opinion of these fantastic pedals. This is my first 'shootout' video, so please excuse any shortcomings. You can check out my music at DudleyTaft.com or on any streaming service, iTunes and CDBaby.

These are all so subjective and really reliant on so many factors. Your amps sound and feel for starters. Also how much definition, extra brightness or midrange you might want in any given mix. Lower end always sounds better on its own then get in a mix and BAM! Totally different.....Pedal madness is such a funny hobby. So many variables. You can do a pedal shoot out all day and then put some kind of sound enhancing pedal in front of the 2 you did the shoot out with and get an entirely different result. Endless changes.

A bit difficult to judge the tones of these two pedals with so much reverb on the amp but I preferred the KOT, more creamy tubey sustaining tone, guitarists are sometimes strange, many are moving away from the classic tubescreamer complaining about the mid range hump but Klons are fetching up to 3 grand being very popular due to their midrange push 😂 get a tubescreamer!!! for a lot less cash

honest question buy why use a looper when you have the pedals right there? What's the point of using foot pedals then? Just use rack gear. I don't think it makes that much difference tone wise.
@DudleyTaft
@DudleyTaft 4 жыл бұрын
Tone-wise it makes no difference, but having the switches closest to the front helps in gig situations where it is dark. Also, you can chain two pedals together on one switch (say for octavia > fuzz). That being said, I don't use it on most of my tours...

@Varone26
@Varone26 4 жыл бұрын
The KOT is only expensive due to waitlists. Resellers have a reason to jack it up because of that high demand for it. As for it being overrated, thats debatable. Between Tubescreamer and Klon style drives, I think the blues breaker style pedals are sometimes forgotten about. If you spend any time with a blues breaker style pedal and find sweet spot it can serve hugely.
@JohnShalamskas
@JohnShalamskas 4 жыл бұрын
The KoT is versatile and will work well with just about any rig you can think of. Its sound is not meant to be a jack of all trades, it is intended for boost and low gain. The overrated label is much more appropriate on the $1500 klon that sounds exactly like the KTR and many other clones that cost 1/8 as much, and many clones will have better tone shaping and/or other features (higher gain, more choices for clipping methods.)

It's the glassy tone that you're getting from your amp(your original sound.) Without that glassy tone the pedals wouldn't sound that good just on their own. Right when you played your clean signal.. and I heard that glassy tone , I knew everything else that followed was going to be sweet.
@DudleyTaft
@DudleyTaft 2 жыл бұрын
You bring up a very good point Joseph. No one ever mentions that pedals sound WAY DIFFERENT in front of different kinds of amps. Old Fenders are great pedal platforms because they tend to have a lot of headroom, and spongy response. Some modern amps are stiffer (think solid state rectifier) and react accordingly changing the character of the pedal. It's very difficult to know how a pedal will sound with your own rig until you try it.

Very nicely done! Great base tone with the Deluxe Reverb. It'd be fun to see this topic covered again, but comparing each pedal to the sound of the Deluxe cranked to 10. Can the pedals at low volume get close to the sound of the amp cranked? I've owned a KOT and an Archer and both have their place. I'd use the KOT if my sound already had a lots of mids, if I was doing mostly rhythm work, or if I was going for a more neutral sound like I was plugged straight in and cranked. I'd use the Klon if I was using a Strat, had less mids in my tone to start with, or needed a bit more push in the midrange to stand out for solos.

With all respect for the Klon, people should realize there are many ways to achieve control over their tone. A Klon could be a good investment, but in the search for great tone, it isn't the be-all-end-all holy grail of tone. It has certainly made its statement and directed people toward another mid push beyond the Tube Screamer circuit. You have to start with a good guitar with good pickups and good cable. A Sarno Black Box Tube Buffer or an Analogman Buffer into the King of Tone into a Maxon OD-820 works even more dynamically than with the Klon. We're not in 2004 - there are some great buffers now for us all. And if you want mid push, go for the Ibanez TS808HW or a Suhr Koko Reloaded. Open your sound with a good clean platform by the OD-820 or a Xotic SH RC Booster. Nothing can replace the King of Tone, though.. that thing is an animal.

IMO buffers are often overpriced for being such a simple circuits. You could build one yourself for cheap if you can solder. There are schematics and kits out there. The Pete Cornish buffer seems to be very acclaimed but any of them will do just fine. Also, every Boss pedal in your chain acts as a buffer.

It's not the same thing. Also, a lot of amps (like my Fender Deluxe) do not have a midrange control. Once you live with a Klon for a little while, it becomes apparent why so many people like it. It does color you sound, but in a really good way.

KOt sounds better as a distortion pedal (when its breaking up). But the Klon does do very well as a clean boost, ie making your amp do its things but just louder. So the Klon in my view is a very good clean boost style pedal but as far as overdrive/distortion tones the KOT and many others sound much better. When i did some AB testing a SHO style circuit almost does what the klon does, but to be fair the klon is a bit better, not much though.
@DudleyTaft
@DudleyTaft 5 жыл бұрын
Well, FWIW I use the Klon as a boost, but not a totally clean boost. I like that it makes the amp break up a bit more and I also LOVE the extra midrange. This is particularly noticeable when playing wit a band, because those mid frequencies cut through the highs and lows of bass and drums. I use another overdrive after it in the chain for solos (usually the Fulltone OCD).

My thoughts on reverb for this demo: I understand people not wanting the reverb on, but for me I need to test these pedals with the sound that I use. Of course reverb echoes (in a very colored way) what signal you put into it. The way reverb responds to these pedals is important to me. Also, as many of you are aware, until you use your pedal either live or on a recording, it is hard to know how effective it is. Sometimes the pedals that sound bland cut through, and some pedals sound fantastic by themselves but seem to lose their coherence when playing live with a band or mixing the sound in with drums and bass and other instruments on a recording.

Basically, a clone is a transparent drive which focuses more on adding drive by maintaining the original sound of the guitar or amp. This is suitable for those who like the sound of the amp and makes it distort without changing the sound, in contrast to classic overdrive or tube simulation which provides characteristics because of its adding or changing sounds suitable for those who like to explore, correct if iam wrong thanks

What speaker do you have in that Deluxe Reverb? That clean tone is killer! I have a '65 Deluxe Reverb, but it doesn't sound that good.

It has an unbranded speaker in there - and I have not changed it since I bought it a bout 3 years ago. I got lucky I guess! It also sounds great through other cabinets, so it must have some mojo...

I took the original Oxford out of mine to keep from damaging it (I had to have an original Jensen Blue Bell re-coned before in another amp and didn't want to have to go through that again). I replaced it with a reissue Jensen Blue Bell, but it turned out to be way too bright. Later replaced that one with a Weber which toned down the highs and improved the sound of the amp quite a bit. But it still doesn't sound as good as yours. Thanks for your reply!

Whilst a used Klon Centaur is heading towards 5K on e.bay and a used KOT is selling for a little more than a 1/10th of that, the Centaur is just a better pedal. Well, at its price it ought to be, but in my and in many’s opinion Centaur is the best OD pedal ever made. Relatively few Centaurs were individually handmade whilst KOT is a more numerous and ubiquitous pedal, which may partly account for the price difference I was fortunate to be clued in on Centaur when new ones could be had for a few hundred U.S. dollars and I bought two, a silver (no horsie) and later a gold (with horsie). I reluctantly sold the silver a few years ago for much less than it’s currently going for, but as long as I can still play I will never sell the gold horsie. Just the best OD pedal I ever heard or played and I have had/played a great many over the years (I love my Marshall "Gov'nor" as well, but it's in a different league). So, is Centaur ten-times better than KOT? Of course not, KOT is an excellent OD pedal (perhaps second only to Centaur), but Centaur really is better than KOT and anything else you want to put up against it for that classic, creamy OD sound from a clean amp. Yeah, that ‘66 Deluxe is certainly the cat’s whiskers. My two pence anyroad.

Glicksman1: I have been playing guitar for 38 years and I have not found a better overdrive than the Klon Centaur. So, we agree on this. Yes, the price difference is HUGE, but the fact remains. I scored mine on reverb.com for $1,300 which was the best price I could find. But I use it ALL THE TIME. It is a key part of my 'signature' tone if you will. Cheers!

You hit the nail on the head - the KLON cuts through the drums and bass and even other melody instruments. It's hard to tell if a guitar/amp/pedal will deliver until you test it out live or at band practice!
