AnalogPlanet Interviews Discogs Founder Kevin Lewandowski

AnalogPlanet editor Michael Fremer first met Discogs founder Kevin Lewandowski at the giant Utrecht Record Fair in The Netherlands back in 2013. Lewandowski was there to promote Discogs and of course to buy records. Fremer was there as a guest of Record Industry, the Netherlands-based pressing plant to autograph copies of Robert Haagsma's book "Passion for Vinyl", for which he'd written a "foreward" and in which he was profiled among many other record collectors, some well-known like Atlantic Records' CEO Craig Kallman and many others not so well known. Haagsma has since written a second edition. And of course Fremer was there to buy records, more used records!
While in Portland, Oregon recently visiting AnalogPlanet contributing editor Malachi Lui, the two visited Discogs world headquarters and interviewed founder Kevin Lewandowski. It's another great "vinyl revival" story you are sure to enjoy!

I didn't realize the founder was that young. I find discogs quite useful as a record collector. Great video. I love this channel and look forward to new videos. Feedback for Mr Lewandowski: I've had far more disappointments with buying vinyl from Discogs than Ebay. The reason, I think, is that at least EBay more or less demands that a photo of the actual item accompanies the listing. Like most experienced buyers I can tell a lot from an image of the record and the cover, irrespective of the stated condition. And at about 8 minutes into this it's pretty clear they don't do a lot at Discogs to help you if you buy a dud. No way would I ever buy expensive rarities without images. I've bought dozens of LPs on Ebay, and other outlets that provide images, in the past year or so, with zero issues and find I no longer bother with Discogs, so if you're reading this Mr Lewandowski, please consider insisting on images of the actual item and not a useless generic one. Until you do I'm probably done with using your service for purchasing. And no, Mr Fremer, Discogs doesn't blow away Ebay for the above reason...

I've also had situations where I thought I could trust a seller, based on a positive initial Discogs experience, only to be let down on subsequent purchases. Nothing beats a photo and, frankly, if it's too much bother to upload for a seller, there's another one I don't want to deal with...

i am an end user of both. I buy and sell on ebay for the last 20years and maybe 4 to 5 years buying on Discogs. I love the information on Discogs. Buying and returning or disputes are handled much faster and more professionally on Ebay. Discogs do not have some of the shipping costs listed from the buyers, so you have to wait for them to email back to you, and you can wait for days for the answer, too many times I have. returns are not handled through discogs, discogs has told me that since they don't handle the money they only send emails to each party, with a longer waiting time between. I sometimes just have to do a charge-back from my credit card and that is done right away! If the item, on Ebay, is not as advertised than the seller has to pay for the shipping back to himself, which is usually the cause for a used lp. Discogs has to shorten their dispute times and make sure that all sellers have their shipping costs listed and any bundled discounts. So yes buying and returning and disputing is much quicker on ebay and Discogs should streamline this part of their buyers experience. When I am looking for lps I open two windows, info from discogs and buy it from ebay, unless ebay does not have a NM copy. and discogs can at 20% of the time is much longer to ship their lps. ebay has the rule that items must be shipped in 24hrs or a day or two at most. Discogs I can go through a whole week before the seller ships??? But Discogs has the best info on the different pressings and what the label looks like!

Next to duct tape, Discogs.com is the greatest invention of all time. "....or at least one of them". Cheers! However, if you could update the search functionality on the Android app so it's as robust as the website search capabilities. That would be a HUGE help. Fremer's idea about offering some "not so easy to find" educational advice would be great. His example of the "1st pressing" mislabeling is spot on.

Deadwax codes are already integrated into the listings on discogs, they have been since the beginning. The challenge is having all the data entered for every LP that contains inscriptions, they need more contributions.

@@derosa1989 Yes, some of the common basic info is there already. What I would like to see is a detailed explanation of the pressing info for some of the major labels. I had asked Mr. Fremer about either writing a booklet, app, of Discogs integration that would easily explain all this. A guy can dream, right? Although, if there were a guide, I bet there would be many who would be willing to buy it if the info is correct. I'm tired of buying records that look clean and scratch-free but don't sound good.

Talking about Discogs vs. Ebay, if you have a really valuable record (over $1000) you are more likely to get a higher price on eBay. The really big spenders in the worldwide market tend to go there.

What's the background noise? Sounds like standing in a server room. IMO, the best way to describe Discogs is: the wikipedia of vinyl records, with a marketplace on the side. Selling to yourself happens a lot in the painters business, to drive up the price of their works. It's a form of speculation.

The biggest problem with Discogs is that when you look at a seller’s inventory, and put something in the cart, when you go back, it puts you at the top of the list, so you have to scroll forever to get back to where you were.

First, (if you haven't already done so) sign up with Discogs.com and go to their forum area. There are a huge number of members who can offer guidance in decoding the matrix/runout data in the dead wax area. To my knowledge, there's no real "How to decipher... by XXX" book out on the market that you can pick up and use to train yourself. It's basically a "learn-as-you-go" and an "accumulate-and-grow" experience - at least that's been my limited experience. You should also watch Michael Fremer's KZbin video RMAF13: Deciphering dead wax letters, numbers and squiggles.

There are two features I really miss on Discogs. One is the ability to list the official studio albums only, wikipedia is actually better at this. The second is the ability to choose (or exclude) sellers based on the country of origin in the marketplace. Postage is too expensive, so many of us only buy from Europe.

Discogs is a useful tool for buyers and sellers equally. Although the site is not perfect, as info on releases is sometimes incorrect. Definitely will keep supporting the sellers on the site. The 'bay and the stack are 2nd and 3rd in line....Discogs is #1 in my book.

Chances are you won't be typing much if at all since the items you own are most likely already in the Discogs database. All you'll need to do is click "Add to Collection".

@@zippyphonic Spent a month adding 300 records. When there is so much wrong in the database and it is hell to find the correct matrix codes, THIS takes time. And I am not talking about adding "new" records to the database, but existing ones. How to add a new/old record I have no clue as it is a jungle of forms to fill out, and I do not understand half of it. I like the database, though.

Just a note to all look at the feedback of the seller just like ebay and lots of dealers have deals on shipping like the first album is 5$ the rest is free or 4.00 and only 1$ per album after you buy the first one so look at the offers from the dealers before you buy I recently bought from a dealer got 5 albums and a cd for 21$ all play great

Hey Michael and Kevin, the very first vinyl record I ever owned was The Beatles 45 Help!/I'm Down. It was released in the USA on July 19, 1965, which happened to be my 10th birthday. My mom and dad gave me a record player for my birthday and on the same day took me to the record store and said, "You can have one record. Pick one out." Of course, being a Beatles fan, I wanted the brand new release, Help!, which they were already playing like crazy on AM radio. I loved the sleeve, too. I ended up literally playing it hundreds and possibly thousands of times. Over the years, I don't know what happened to my original copy of the 45 of Help! So, after I discovered Discogs, I ordered that record, original 1965 45 of Help! with 'very good' sleeve. I received it in great condition and it is in the Nirvana Section of my vinyl collection, which is pretty large and serious, including all genres. Over the years, I've owned thousands of vinyl albums. Thanks for having a service that provided me with something very, very special to me (sentimentally).

Just got done entering 1500, 78 records i got 2 years ago, rangeing from 1910 to 1955 they had no covers most where found on discogs i was able to id the dates, music styles, and ratings to compare with my reviews very helpful in cataloging this very random mess. Also some videos. I have only listened to about 300 so far. So far kept 1500 out of 5000.

My one criticism of Discogs is that, as a busy person, I sometimes miss communications from vendors. Messages from vendors are saved on Discogs with no notification to the buyer. It would help tremendously if a buyer received an email telling them that there are messages waiting. Because I have missed several vendor communication, I’ve received negative feedback - depressing.

Allmusic was the first to have a database but it didn't get into specific pressings and focused more on opinionated album reviews with just track listing and credits.

Until Discogs has sellers post photos of actual items for sale and not generic pics, the site will stay second fiddle to eBay. Photos are a must, as most sellers don't know how to grade records. Many times, photos can expose flaws that sellers do not see or list. Unfortunate, as there is a lot to like about Discogs. Must go the extra step.

DISCOGS...Is there a possibility to record EVERY master tapes in the record companies vaults on discogs...that would be awesome and very helpful. Also a branch from Discogs called SESSIONOGS...There is nothing on the net that really informs Companies and collectors of ARTISTS sessions. It would also keep records in case of destroying the originals. Think about it. I have made a template to fill in information of my fav artist Connie Francis from 1955>. I love Discogs but it definitely has it's shortcomings. I made my collection public, over 450 records, and the only thing my visitors can see is other peoples records, all for sale (I'm not selling), in no apparent order and no way to search or filter. Did I mention over 450 records? And mine is a rather small collection. I decided to make my own website. The community is wonderful, definitely a great website for research, but the platform I think needs some major improvements.

I started using Discogs in 2007 primarily as a source for information for recordings I already had. Later, I started using Discogs as a middleman for purchasing recordings. To date, I have had no problems with any purchase I have made through Discogs. Again, Discogs is not the merchant so really should not be made to account for purchases made on their site (unless it is false information posted, which they do have in place methods to prevent this). More than looking at Discogs as a store, the amazing thing is the incredible database they have which provides the information which can help someone decide what version of a recording they want to add to their collection. @@MrCatalysis101 While I understand your desire to hold Discogs to the same (or even close) level of accountability as eBay, the disparity of income between the two alone justifies the diminished ability of Discogs to perform anywhere near as well as eBay. When "M" changes to "B" before "illions", you can do a lot more. It would be interesting to see, if taking into consideration total volume of sales OR looking at record sales alone on eBay, there has been a significant difference in the way things are handled. I have been on eBay since 2001 and have ordered recordings there as well. I remember receiving a broken LP. The upshot to the whole thing was, "It happens". Here's your payment back. Funny thing...I still didn't have the record (which was a rare one). The seller moved on and you would never know it happened (my complaint means nothing to someone who is ordering something from this seller other than a record). At least with Discogs narrowness of merchandise, its record would have significance to every buyer.

I signed up for DISCOGS months ago and I loved the site.. UNTIL they changed something a month or so ago and I got bombarded by basically demands for accepting cookies when I logged in. I say demand because when I decline (And I have to go through multiple clicks to decline each batch of cookies, no pun intended) I get the same demand over and over again requiring I go through the same time consuming decline of each set of cookies. I clicked on a small link in the extended page of that cookie acceptance demand and there is a list of all the cookies "third party venders" will be putting on your computer. The list is MASSIVE! More than 100 so called vender cookies will be placed into your system if you accept. Now DISCOGS declares your privacy protection in THEIR site but these third party cookies... Are they restricted to gathering data ONLY from your use of the DISCOGS site? Are they gathering your data ALL the time? DISCOGS would not answer. I am currently trying to gather info on the over 100 cookies that DISCOGS wants to put on our computers and identify the companies behind the cookies. I will no longer use DISCOGS as they won't publish the list of the third party cookies and define what data these cookies gather and when and what protections we as users have from these third parties. We pay for anti-virus and anti-spying software and here is a company wanting you to allow actual spying on you by over 100 third parties. Sorry no thanks. My bet is on the cookie request window if DISCOGS stated "we will be putting more than 100 "third party" cookies on your system" most people would say "NO." So DISCOGS does not spell that out. Napster was once a pretty cool site when it started then it quickly became the internet whore where you picked up viruses and spyware left and right. DISCOGS is not following a policy or government regulation when giving third parties access to their customers online information. They are selling that access to their customer's online information. DISCOGS has not denied that to me the multiple times I have contacted them.

He didn't say it wasn't there, but it is too often not used correctly by those who list records, if they list the matrix codes at all - too often there is no code. Way too often they think they have a 1st pressing, when it is a 2nd, 3rd or 4th pressing. Everyone wants their records to be a 1st pressing it seems. I've heard this over and over from buyers, that 1st pressings is not really understood properly. I think it is too complicated for people to list the matrix code correctly. Michael Fremer is spot on.

Have you seen much of Fremer's camera work in the past (Especially trade shows). Holy shaky camera headache, batman. Production isn't his strong suit. Information and story telling is. Story is always the king in video, so it makes his content still watchable. He made the comment how he thinks he could help Discogs with dead wax info. I would offer production enhancement for a minor or major fee.

Unfortunately my first experience with Discogs turned out to be bad! Some guy with great reviews for at least a couple of years turned out to be fraudster. Ebay used to be a great place to buy records, but discogs has hurt the ebay record business. As a record collector, I much prefer the auction format, so this has been a quite negative development for me.

People who "use the information" get it for free. The company has revenue of $15 million, which is apparently generated by 8% commission from the marketplace sales. The business model is like a credit card company that takes a transaction fee from the seller. Discogs is basically a storefront, paid for by the people selling, if you're just looking it costs you nothing.

Discogs.... the forum was so hostile it put me off the actual facility to buy as I assumed the users would be some of the sellers and hence I wouldn't want to deal with them... it was a shame, I was excited to use it... if it was my baby I would close the forum aspect of make it a separate entity with a different name

Never joined the forum banter for Discogs, but it sounds similar for this channel, as well. As demonstrated below. Any kind of gear forums get pretty volatile quickly and reveal the ages of people, too. From the abbreviated text speak to just plain juvenile snark for those in need of a place to vent their miserable lives.

I'll give the service a go, I just don't recommend the forum but it's the same all over.... on reflection, at the time it put me off using Discogs.... it was just my customer experience and I thought it may be of use or not...
