So what did we learn today, kids? -Emotion matters a lot in fighting games and competitions overall -Taunting is a powerful tool to get the upper hand on your opponent. -There are a lot of ways to taunt your opponent and they may have different effects, from -putting them off their game to actually motivating them to try harder -Core-A Gaming had a rough childhood.

but the point still stands. The fact that everyone agrees, speaks of our ideals in the making. In war everything is on the line, including our lives, which means we disregard things we strive for in idealistic fashion. In video games though, you are not that desperate, because: 1.) Numbers are not a factor and you are responsible for your loss. 2.) your life is not on the line. What you said is true, but the mentioned ideals which we agree upon still stand. What Core a gaming said in the video makes sense and it actually works.

RAF Leader the Genova convention is a joke that nobody follows, so fucking sad
@SinerAthin
@SinerAthin 6 жыл бұрын
The Geneva convention is actually taken pretty seriously in late European history. Not everyone's followed it of course, but it has helped reduce the unnecessary human suffering in conventional European military wars. Of course, moving outside of Europe, where most of the petty wars and skirmishes are fought today by criminals, terrorists or ethnic groups; the Geneva convention doesn't really reach them.
@JonathanSharman
@JonathanSharman 6 жыл бұрын
This argument is flawed. Desecrating your enemies' bodies absolutely can have an effect on the morale of their surviving allies and thus be an effective tactic in war. The reason desecration, rape, etc. are outlawed is not because they are ineffective but because nations have agreed that such psychological warfare is unjustifiable and immoral.

I always hated getting taunted on after a bad match in smash 4 online so much, but even despite this I'm still upset about them removing taunts from smash ultimate online quickplay. I experienced the mindgame effect that taunts caused firsthand, it was something that worked, and now it's no longer an option... aaaand people have just started T-bagging instead anyway.

@leo mendoza it's extra tilt. "Here, take the handicap. You'll need it." It not only encourages good manners, but also, when you do get the taunt and bad manners, it's that much more impactful. "I'm so confident I can mop the floor with you I'll give you a free Yellow Roman Cancel, and I'll still take it away from you." I love it because when you see a taunt in Guilty Gear, you no longer think "Wow, that dude is a scumlord. Ugh, here comes the teabags. Immature." You instead think "Oh shit, we're about to see a SHOW! In a PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENT, this man just handed the other man a gun and said 'you'll need it!' Someone here is going to walk away looking like an extreme loser, either the man who threw the match for himself or the man who just was given a handicap and still lost!" It turns taunting into a show, instead of an immature name-calling war.

Taunting for me is situational. I never taunt my opponent, unless it's like casuals with a friend and we're both joking. In a competitive aspect, when I get taunted, I usual laugh because it makes me think of how stupid they'll look if they lose (assuming they taunted mid-set). As for me, my only 'taunt' is I tend to do flashy moves or pose after the round ends (usually with Lars) as a celebration for winning. Not as disrespect to my opponent, but a way to feel good about winning. If anything, by not losing my composure and winning with solid play, that's all I need.

I think the biggest reason they turned me off was because they just seemed impossible to play, but looking back I think it's because I just didn't understand them. In fairness, fighting games have only gotten more and more complex over the years. Great for skill fiends and the dedicated - everybody else not so much. I like skill, but I'm not good enough to play much of anything (used to play the earliest Streets Fighters, Samurai Showdown, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, Tekken, King of Fighters for fun, used to know the movesets for pretty much every major game from 88-2004) but I also hate games like DC vs Mortal Kombat - to me they are shitty broken games with no flow to them, and no depth. I used to love fighting games, but now I find no joy in them at all - they have all gotten so complicated they just turn me off. My fav is/was King of fighters 98 - again for fun - so many games old and new are "broken" for tournament play, but still great games in their own right.

Protip: if you are right handed, try with a left-handed stick. It seems counter-intuitive, but take a look at kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqjcfKtuiduFmac. I am terrible at traditional fighting games, and I was able to do somewhat better when I took my fight stick and just spun it 180'. Yes moving the stick left moved my character to the right, but I still think if I get a "left"handed stick I might actually be competent.

Part of Sun Tzu's teachings in his book "The Art of War" are to enrage your opponent, they're far more likely to make mistakes and you can properly punish them for it. Tea Bagging is no different to me, it's psychological warfare. My Dad has always told me, "If you don't want them to get your goat, don't show them where you keep it.". Lot of possibilities, but these 2 reactions are the most commons: 1) they T-bag too even when it's dangerous and sometimes you gain good combos opportunities freely. 2) They become way more aggressive to try to show you they are totally superior. And the result is: more possibilities to punish overconfident moves.

When people are refining the games themselves to this extent, people will search outside the game to get better and obtain the upper hand. It's human nature, perfect something so flawless that a new way of elevating the outcome is needed. Stone to bronze to iron, etc. Competitive gaming is branching out now. Mind games is always the first in a non-athletic sport. Although watch VR in 20-30 years become so good that gamers will have to be in top physical condition to perform. That's the ultimate step in this community's progression, the merging of regular sports with e-sports since the holodeck will eventually be a thing. That or the Matrix, either seem like a fitting end goal.
@PomLamb
@PomLamb 7 жыл бұрын
I like the idea that there will be a day where vr makes its way into professional gaming, but having a video game that requires physical abilities of an athlete seems impractical. I say this because being an actual sports athlete pays way more then e-sports and if people are physically fit to be great athlete that they would be better off trying to be a pro athlete and not a pro gamer. Also the capabilities of future tech vr is scary. I shudder to see the day they decide to create vr that emulates pain. I don't know about you but I would not want to know how a ryu uppercut feels irl. As for vr and professional gaming is concerned pro gaming can run perfectly fine without vr.

I think the most important bit about taunting is that rule of "Target is not of far lesser skill", which is where alot of contention with taunting online comes from I feel. An act of humiliation to rile an equal opponent is a tactical maneuver that is used to wedge the skill-gap between you, giving you control of the situation. No opponent is going to forego the chance to edge your chance of victory from 50% to 60%. Even as someone of limited nerve, I don't particularly mind getting taunted at in a heated battle and don't even feel the disrespect. On the contrary, actually. When an equal opponent has to resort to abuse my self-control to claim an edge over me, it's an assurance that I was worth using that on to lessen risks. I may not act it in the moment, but I acknowledge it and respect it the moment after. When you target someone clearly below your grade with this shit, this element becomes null and void. It stops being a tactical alternative to attacking in order to soften the opponent's resolve and becomes a hollow power-play made in bad taste to rub it in their face. Just straight up bullying that proves nothing except how much of a shit you are. It's just not on-point to make someone's already irritating situation of getting thrashed worse by beating on their self-esteem while you're at it. Overall, just save your taunts for when it's actually impressive to get away with.

Teabaging (I think) actually might have one other effect, aside of taunting. It can also distract your opponent and make your next move less predictable. This way of using teabaging, however, is more appropriate for situation, when your opponent is knocked down, not when stunned. Though I never use it myself. I’m not that good fighting player anyway.

Picking Guile against one Chun-Li yet picking Mika against another; It speaks wonders about how much of the game is played on a player-to-player level as opposed to character-vs-character. Knowing your match-ups is important, in and out of the actual game. I'm betting many would agree that Ricki is more easily flustered than MOV is; both of Du's characters exploit this mental state well, but Mika friggin' FEEDS off of it. And it all goes straight to her ass.

skillustrate its more easier to explain really. Ricki has had problems with Du's Mika all year in the CPT whenever they faced off. And MOV was not sure of the guile MU as he took losses from ISDD's Guile in EU events prior to CapCup. Just Du's. matchup calls paying off.

Those previous matchup facts helped Du, but he actually told a story about MOV after Capcom Cup. The players were all training in different rooms. Du saw MOV was playing and training strictly against Mika. So Du, deciding he wanted to be cheeky, sat down close by MOV and practiced his Mika tech where MOV could see it. Then come capcom cup top 8 he went straight to Guile. While telling the story Du couldn't help but smile as he talked about how he saw the visible facial surprise and concern MOV had to this character pick.

I think in game taunts should exist which affects even the gameplay. Like say give the opponent additional damage for their next attack or like Guilty Gear where in the next round, it gives your opponent half of a full meter. You can even give every character 2 types of taunts; the taunt that doesn't affect the gameplay and the one that does. With very simple things you can make the metagate so much wider and more interesting to watch for the audience. It can also be used to make more personalities for the pro community. Like that one guy who always do risky taunts and still wins consistently. Sure there's that one thing that turned pretty bad but for the most part, taunts are all in good fun.

People have throw controllers and chairs all the time without being disqualified. That's just top player privilege.

The most interesting part of this topic is how the same action can induce so many different reactions from different players. For me, being taunted or instant-killed gets me fired up and makes me more passionate to fight the next round harder. In net play when you often have little to no communication with your opponent, taunting is sometimes my only way of communicating with the opponent during the match, even if my intended message "recognize your weakness, focus and fight me" can interpreted completely differently.

My Smash Corner had a pretty good video on taunting, but this did cover other aspects of it, like conditioning and should it be banned. I say no. Taunting adds another element to the meta in a fighting game: the psychological game. If you banned it just because it caused emotional stress, you'd not only be dragging the meta away from it's intended course, but I also feel it limits the players ability to express themselves. Good work Gerald!

bumber indirectly they would be banned. its called order of protection. i mean if you are not stupid you will file and press charges. then its all about going to tournaments if he decides to go to the tournament he gets to choose A) stay and play B) get the fuck out C) get scorted to jail by the cops D) he may act stupid or not know you was there. wich could give him a free pass to leave without going to jail. at the end any contact with you is violating the law, so after the first incident of him showing up to the tournaments you go to he would most likely not go to the others, unless ofcourse this is out of the country then you cant really do nothing (or you could file another order of protection wich would be a dick move, im sure he/she/it didnt get a passport and a plane ticket to bug you)

I don't know about banning it, but I'm not sure it should be encouraged. I mean, the mental game is already there without taunting, so it's not like a huge chunk of the game would be lost if taunting wasn't a thing. Just kinda makes the whole experience go a bit sour when a guy teabags in a show of disrespect, and then turns around to shake their hand when the match is won. So disingenuous. So fake. I had hoped gamers would behave with more class considering the history of games and the disrespect that all gamers constantly received not very long ago. Plus, public humiliation is just plain cruel. Heck, most developed places forbid punishment by public humiliation, and that's for criminals, not an innocent gamer at a tournament.
@Fortunus94
@Fortunus94 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, at all. First, you allow fighting games to taunt in game, fine. Express yourself and how happy you are. Then you taunt before games. They already do it in the interviews and over twitter, it boosts ratings so much it's encouraged. Then they taunt after games, popping off and OOOH TEABAG HAHAAAAAAAAA GO HOME SCRUB GIVE ME MY MONEY I WON'T SHAKE YA HAAAAND. Where does the line stop, though? Suddenly I beat you in a top 8, I swing by your message board while you're streaming and openly mock you with how I took that top 8 game, then post a link to my twitch instead. I give you a call to let you know how terrible you are and disappointed you should be. Ultimate psychological warfare, right? I custom print a shirt of your girlfriend that dumped you and wear it to the tournament while I teabag you and rub my stomach- where her face is. That's not banned, that's just taunting. Trump did the same thing in the election. Picked ONE target and bullied him until he dropped out of the race. Then moved on to the next. Sure, slippery slope may be a bit of a way to describe it, but I don't think Daigo would appreciate me printing out a picture of his mother and taping it to my crotch just before I fight him. Hell, he hates taunting so much he wears headphones for fights, so I think it'd get into his head. Put up stuffed dolls of his character that have been cut open all around where the TV is, I just keep it in my pocket and pull it out as we go up on stage and ask "YOU MAD YA LIL PUSSAYAYYAYYAYAYAYAYAYY?" Doesn't even matter then. I win ONE round, the FIRST round, and already the humiliation, the pressure, and the pure anger will wash over. I haven't done anything illegal. Cut up a couple of dolls? Print out a picture and tape it to my crotch? I never even made advances to his mom, it's just weird of me, it's not illegal of me. She can get a restraining order put on me, I imagine, but the damage is done. Next thing you know, SFV is a game of "How far can we go without actually spitting in their mouths?" People compete at tournaments because they're the best, not because they're the BM'ingest, cringiest, "WOOLAD"est mind-game jerkoffs. It's a disrespect to the community.
