The tragic part of his character is how much he actually has and what he wastes it on. He has a private island, is extremely rich, super technology and is wickledly intelligent, but he WASTES all of this on the most petty and ultimately pointless plans ever. It is somewhat played for laughs, but when you think about it more its quite tragic.

Syndrome’s biggest problem was his inability to let go of the past. He believed that Mr. Incredible’s rejection of his offer to be his sidekick vindicated his belief that his lack of superpowers prevented him from becoming a superhero, when, in truth, he was an impulsive kid, who was bound to get himself killed, due to this. He never tried to better himself or recognize his flaws, but chose to lash out at those that denied him what he felt he deserved.

Another detail that people never catch is during the “Fly home buddy, I work alone” scene, we see Bob confronting and dealing with Bomb Voyage, yet in Buddy’s perspective and flashback, we just see Mr. Incredible denying and turning him down in a freshly lit room for no good reason. This really lets us know that Syndrome’s obsession with Mr. Incredible is so far off the deep end that he forgot why he liked and idolized Mr. Incredible in the first place, being a superhero.

Ok so he holds onto it but not as tightly and allowing the bitterness to feaster leading to his "when everyone is super no one is super" idea, but instead of focusing that wholly on his own gain and selfish egotism had instead actually followed through on that mantra. Syndrome is one of the faces of the next generation of heroes long forgotten of the days of Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, and Frozone. Similar to The Boyz, the new generation of heroes could be much more commercialized than it was in Bob's era. As civilian life for him was dull and unfulfilling, Bob inevitably wants to get back into what his true passion is in being a superhero. But now Bob is passed his prime and is behind the times and ends up just getting in the way and embarrassing himself as a relic from the past who not only can't keep up with the new generation of heroes but even the lower rating new generation of villans get the best of him. Now, in order to save what little dignity his name has left and to reinvent his image Bob thinks to turn to none other than Buddy, the most famous and higest rating hero but now it's Buddy given Bob the cold shoulder

I do think you missed a tiny point in the car conversation - Mr Incredible isn't frustrated at having to do that generally, it's that Buddy, by this point, is effectively stalking him and seemingly takes up a LOT of his time doing... not quite this sort of thing but verging on it. I always got the impression that this is not the first time Mr Incredible has had to let Buddy down, and he'd BEEN gentle every other time - but Buddy just ignored it until he ACTUALLY got into trouble.

I respectfully disagree. I think you’re way off base with your interpretation of that scene @kamalasb7292 . There’s no mention or any suggestions of stalking in that scene, Mr Incredible only mentions Buddy making him sign lots of autographs and taking pictures. You’re taking quite a leap with saying that scene implied that Mr. Incredible was being stalked by him. At best, your assertion is a possibility only because he entered Mr Incredible’s vehicle without permission, which the scene seems to imply is the first instance of Buddy violating Mr Incredible’s space and privacy based on their exchange. And Mr Incredible also apologized to Buddy or rather Syndrome later during their first encounter on the island, which would imply that he understood the way he interacted with Buddy as a kid in the past was wrong and a big mistake.

I'll have to agree with at @Getdaycornouttamyface here. It's an interesting theory, but when he's talking to Buddy in the car he only recognizes him from his fan club, which is a pretty appropriate place for Mr. Incredible to encounter his number one fan, not to mention that he has a hard time remembering his name initially. If he had been stalking him, I feel like his reaction to Buddy would have been way more severe than it already was. Instead, it was more like a "who are you? Oh yeah, that kid. Why the hell are you in my car?" type moment not an "oh my god this kid won't leave me alone, get away from me now you creep." moment. Again, interesting theory but I don't see any indicators that point to Buddy stalking him before this moment.

Syndrome was likely a malignant narcissist. One minor slight was enough to make him change the entire course of his life, and in the flashback with Mr. Incredible he hyperfixates on being talked down to so hard that Bomb Voyage isn't even there.

That's what i thought. Often when we grow older, we understand the actions of the adults in our lives. You'd think with Buddy's intelligence he would have worked out by the time he became an adult that being a superhero sidekick as a child would be dangerous, but he instead focused on his hurt feelings.

“I am your number one fan” never got creepier. Syndrome/Buddy Pine shares similarities with Reverse-Flash, Annie Wilkes, and Gil Renard from The Fan (1996). They’re all obsessed with their idols to the point of nearly deifying them. When they get let down or their image of them shatters, that obsession turns into hatred. That hate fuels their motivation to destroy that image. They essentially fall in hate with the hero/protagonist.

Fun fact: according to a behind the scenes segment on DVD, in an early draft of the movie Syndrome was supposed to be a minor villain who appeared and was destroyed at the beginning of the movie, but the staff adored the character and reworked the story so he could be the main villain in the final version of the movie.

This was brought up to me a while back: When Buddy was rejected, Mr. Incredible was dealing with a supervillain (one whom he seem to have past altercations), so he’s constantly moving his eyes between Buddy & Bomb-Boyage. Yet in Buddy’s “memory”, Mr. Incredible is posing, lording over him, even ending with a dismissive wave. None of that happen; heck Buddy just “forgets” that their was a villain in the same room, he evens ignores the damage he (intentionally) caused on the train bridge.

It's just that when we say "It's not around anymore" or "It's not good" that just means the former dominant provider of the medium i.e. Disney/Pixar isn't making good animation anymore. However, that's just ONE studio and we can't act as if they have a monopoly on good quality animation because their competition is destroying them.

The thing about Buddy is that doesn't he seem to understand the life he had built for himself. He was super rich, a genius, he had a private island and a woman to himself. But his inability to let go is what tore all that apart. Not to mention the dozens of superheroes that were killed because of him, all because he wanted to play hero. So he pretty much deserved his fate.

Buddy Pine invaded his private space sneaking into his car. Yes, he was an annoyance, but Buddy went way too far by getting into the car, disrupting the crime scene and he made Bomb Voyage almost escape with robbing a bank by acting without awareness. This should be mentioned that Buddy was WAY out of line, and made things exceptionally dangerous, especially as his actions, led to other actions that essentially got ALL Superheroes barred.

Exactly, I can't get behind the idea of how Mr. Incredible should have been nicer when he's literally on the job fighting CRIME. Like, literal robbers with guns and a Frenchmen with explosions and shit. Any rational person on the job with the possibility to encounter these things or more would tell the kid to rightly fuck off and they don't owe him the time of day. If anyone is to blame, its the parents who didn't explain to him why stalking and invading an active crime in place is a bad idea. Mr. Incredible is not his dad, he has no obligation to teach him morals and values.

Yeah... Mr. Incredible definitely treated the kid poorly and there's no denying that. But at the same time, when he sent him back home in the back of a police car and called his mother, he had just gone through the stress of almost being responsible of the death of a civilian child. Those superheros still have plenty of human DNAs after all. It's hard to blame him for such a reaction in the heat of the moment. He just wanted to make sure the kid would never try something dangerous like that again for his own good. He wasn't antagonizing Buddy, he was legitimately worried for his well-being.

Syndrome is Pixar's best villain, hands down. Also notice how when Syndrome flashes back to that moment, the scenery is entirely different where in his version it's just the two of them with Bob harshly brushing him off and turning his back to him when what we saw in the beginning was very different as then Buddy had interrupted Bob when he was in the middle of apprehending a dangerous criminal. The tragedy as you said, also comes from how had he moved past his grudge or had Mr. Incredible been more patient with him when he was a child which shaped him negatively as well, Buddy really could have changed the world for the better in so many ways: He could have been like Winston in the second movie, or Tony Stark. I think though it also goes into how in some ways he also mirrors Mr. Incredible's own inability to move on from the past.

I think the reason why Syndrome was so fixated on Mr. Incredible is because he most likely grew up with a single mother, and saw Bob as a surrogate father. So, when Bob rejected him, not once but twice, he felt betrayal like no other, as if his father abandoned him a second time.

You really can't blame Mr. Incredible for Syndrome. All of the negativity and slights from Mr Incredible were way over imagind. Buddy made his own choices to hold onto the past and not let anything go. Buddy chose to murder dozens of superheroes just so he could get back at a man that he perceived to have wronged him. Bob stated he’d been patient and nice to Buddy when he was bothering him at The Fanclub and went above what any normal person would expect from a celebrity to one of his fans. It’s only when Buddy got creepy and started stalking him he got aggressive and frustrated cause the kid was actively getting in the way of crime scenes, breaking into his property and refused to even listen to the man he supposedly wanted to work for

would love for you to do Nate Jacobs from Euphoria, he is a complex character and really walks the line of born evil vs created evil. i also find it very interesting how all of his traits are twisted versions of good traits -being smart and strategic becomes manipulation -drive becomes ruthlesness -physical prowess becomes domination on the surface all of his traits are considered "good" and are that of a succesful person but if these traits are possesed by the wrong person then you have someone like Nate.

The wickedness of Syndrome was not that he killed supers, but the manner in which he did it... found them in hiding, then lured them out like prey into a one on one deathmatch with a hero killing machine, knowing they would come out of retirement for a chance to be super again. Literally slaughtering them one by one... and on the odd occasions they succeeded their victory was data for upgrades before they were inevitably slaightered in the rematch... bone chillingly brilliant and terrifying. A true marvel of animated storytelling.

As funny as it sounds I view Syndrome as one of the most realistic villains. There are ppl who have quite a bit of intelligence and they've used it to harm the lives of their idol. Only thing Syndromes got more sympathetic about him is he only did his horrific actions after he was directly turned down face to face and was a kid. Honestly, I don’t blame Mr Incredible for rejecting Buddy. Up to this point he was nice to him until Buddy nearly got a lot of people hurt or killed when he tried to help Mr Incredible and that’s where Mr Incredible put his foot down and made it clear that he worked alone. Could he have handled it better? Perhaps. I think no matter what Mr Incredible could have said or done Buddy would have took it the wrong way and still took the rejection hard.

I think another famous comic book villain said it best: All it takes is one bad day. Buddy caught Mr. Incredible on the worst possible day, a day he was distracted, his wedding, both his denial of it through work, and finally having to rush after his second encounter with Buddy and Bomb-voyage, let to multiple mistakes, Buddy nearly dying from a bomb, a train wreck, and the villain's escape. Bob's case of wedding jitters not only created a villain in Syndrome, but ended the life that he enjoyed, the damage he caused, and his rushing off without caring about it ended that world. It was a bad day for both Bob and Buddy, and the set them on a course to become enemies.

Without Buddy, Supers wouldn't have gotten banned and would still be around. It's solely Buddy's fault for that, he caused the track of the train to blow up, requiring Mr. Incredible to stop it, inadvertently injuring the passangers which fueled the lawsuits that got them banned. If Buddy wasn't stalking him, he would have soundly defeated Bomb Voyage, went to his wedding and at worse got sued by the suicidal person but without the extra damages (caused by Buddy's stupidity), it likely wouldn't have done much damage.

I honestly think that THE INCREDIBLES could fix their ruined series by showing the world that Syndrome wanted to create brought to full fruition: the Incredibles get pulled into an alternate timeline ( giving Bird the chance to make jolly fun of that trope to the full in the meantime ) where Syndrome won, his Incredibles were either killed or turned into mindless minions of his evil, and the world is full of ordinary people using Syndrome's tech to be quasi-Supers , throwing the entire planet into endless chaos of super team fighting super team and super villains running rampant. In that world, there are no ordinary folk to protect. There are only supers fighting for no other reason than that they want to. The "real Incredibles" have to try to fix what they see going horribly wrong...or die trying, while Emperor Syndrome rules the planet. THE INCREDIBLES : THIRD TIME'S THE ENDGAME.

Consider that Ego may have been a bright young schoolboy w/ two strengths -- a love of good food, plus a gift for writing & quick wit. As he rose up thru the grades during his schooling, he almost certainly would've excelled in many of his studies, particularly language & grammar. He may have in fact graduated w/ honors, gone on to attend & graduate college w/ multiple degrees & thereby had his pick of numerous prospective employers clamoring for him to apply. As Ego himself hints at, there is a culture of arrogance among food critics, & if Ego had gained high status & fame among his peers then that would've only amplified the toxic effects of such an elitist culture. When Chef Gasteau began publicly using his motto "Anyone can cook" to promote his cookbooks & (possibly) his own TV cooking show, Ego seems to have taken that statement as an open rebuke, perhaps even a personal insult: what Gasteau or Ego does isn't reserved for a gifted few, but in fact is achievable by anyone who has the courage to believe in themselves. Thus Ego may have issued his fateful, negative review of Gusteau's restaurant purely as a vendetta to strike down what he saw as an existential threat to everything Ego believed in: that those who succeed in life do so because of their natural superiority to the rest of "the herd" & not for any other reason. Chef Gusteau died & his restaurant suffered not because they'd committed any real harm to Ego, but because the powerful food critic couldn't see beyond his own petty animosity -- in other words, Ego deliberately set out to hurt Gusteau out of sheer egotism. We see this clearly when Ego reacts in shock & horror when his assistant timidly informs him that Gusteau's restaurant has regained its popularity among the public -- sacre bleu! Gusteau's couldn't have recovered because it SHOULDN'T: it didn't deserve success, & Ego himself declares that his scathing review was supposed to be The Last Word on the matter. When Ego himself goes to confront Chef Linguini he taunts the young chef by saying that so far he's been *playing the game without an opponent* ... because Ego has long ago lost sight of himself as an objective judge. He is determined to be Linguini's ultimate adversary, no holds barred ...until the entree he is finally served at Gusteau's unexpectedly transports Ego back to a nearly lost, cherished memory when the simple joys of good home cooking meant the world to him as an innocent youth. Ego finally reconnects w/ the fact that what should matter most to him is praising excellence wherever he finds it, not destroying restaurants & ruining careers. Only after that crucial turning point does Ego reconsider his point of view, culminating w/ his 2nd review of Gusteau's in which he admits [paraphrasing] -- I now believe I have begun to truly understand what Gusteau was trying to say in that motto of his, "Anyone can cook", to which I once took such great offense. Not everyone can cook ... but *a great cook can come from anyone*.

One of the villains I was actually able to relate to, as messed up as that sounds. Not because I like he was in the right or Mr. Incredible was wrong for not giving him the time of day, but I think most people know what it feels like to be so thoroughly burned by someone who you had put up on a pedestal. Who meant the world to you. And once that bridge is burned, it’s almost impossible to repair, and if you aren’t mindful of it, those feelings will eat you alive and turn into something else for better or oftentimes worse.

One nice detail of this movie can be seen when Mr. Incredible says "go home buddy, i work alone". In the actual scene, Mr. Incredible is holding Bomb Voyage while talking to buddy, but on the flashback, Mr. Incredible is looking down on Buddy and Bomb Voyage is nowhere to be seen, meaning that he remembers that moment as more humiliating than it actually was.

1. I always found it interesting that, even at his worst, Syndrome still seemingly admired Mr.Incredible. He gushed about how many upgrades he had to make for the Omnidroid to be worthy of fighting him and how he managed to cleverly fake his death. 2. One thing to note is that Mirage was tracking Frozone and her finding Mr.Incredible was pure coincidence, which caused Syndrome to shift and accelerate his plans. If he hadn't been with Frozone that night, there's a good chance the former would have been added to the long list of colleagues and friends Syndrome had alredy murdered.

Great analysis as always! Syndrome is hands down the greatest villian in the Pixar universe. He's brutal, over the top, and his motivation is realistic as its based on the rejection of his idol. Have you ever thought about doing one on a Shakespearean play? I think characters like Richard the Third, Macbeth, or the story of Hamlet would be great picks for this channel...

One thing you did miss is how Syndrome "remembers" the incident when Mr. Incredible tells him "Fly home Buddy, I work alone." In the actual scene, Mr. Incredible says this while he shoves Bomb Voyage against the wall and he said so in a tone that is somewhat like "Look, now's not the best time, get out of here!" with Bomb Votage insulting him. But when Syndrome brings it up and "remembers" it, Bomb Voyage is NOWHERE to be seen in his memory, instead it's just Mr. Incredible who tells him "Fly home, Buddy. I work alone." in a cold dismissive tone. This shows that Syndrome as a young boy had quite the tunnel vision. He was so insisting on being the sidekick to Mr. Incredible that NOTHING else mattered. He did not pay attention to Bomb Votage at all, he did not pay attention to the dangers, Mr. Incredible was all he had in mind back then. Everything else was just blocked out. So him rememembering it all wrong to "justify" his hatred for him just shows how close minded he was. As children we all have tunnel visions, we all get affected by adults who dismiss us at a young age and to us it feels like we are unwanted and unloved when we can't see the bigger picture on the reason WHY they don't want us to be around at that moment and get upset and confused when they tell us to go away further. At that age we will get upset and probably hate them back in return, not caring why they are not in the mood to have us around, all we cared about was our own feelings, we just end up sulking and not wanting to talk to them. That's what Syndrome was like as a child and even as he grew up but yet his memory of the incident never chagned, to him it's always Mr. Incredibles fault. He may have the body of an adult, he may have the mind of a genius...but he has the soul of a sulking child.

I believe that at least part of Buddy was always Syndrome. You might get the impression that since he idolized superheroes like many kids he would want to do good. But I don't think even as a child that's what attracted him to super heroes. It was the power and fame; it wasn't helping people. Even with as rough as an encounter with Mr.Incredible as he had, to do something as evil as serial killing requires at least a bit of evil already in one's heart. He frankly displays a lot of characteristics of a psychopath, probably fostered through a mixture of nature and nurture (seeing as his home life probably wasn't very good although considering the merch he had he must of atleast had money). I don't think he displays empathy or remorse in the entirety of the film.

I agree. I have always viewed him as having some kind of personality disorder. Made even worse by the environment. If given the best possible conditions to grow up in (loving & nurturing parents, as well as an environment that takes his huge intellect in to account) he would probably have become a distant/cold, bit humorous scientist. Given the upbringing, he would've most likely created gadgets for the supers, or weapons for the government (unsure if that's something good) He could've been a decent person, but most likely not a great one, personality wise. But then again, does he need to be? His major drive in the movie is his hatred towards Bob. If that is gone, what is replacing it? Did he love creating for the sake of it? Would he create weapons on the "good side" for them to later abuse without him getting involved?

When an Analyzing Evil video is released: *”You sly dog, you got me monologuing. I can’t believe it.”* Also I hope you cover Captain Rhodes from Day of the Dead. While not a villain until the end he’s certainly an antagonist. He’s my favorite character from the Dead trilogy but that’s partially due to his relations with the other characters.

I kinda feel like he killed Mirage too between getting knocked into that building and attempting to kidnap Jack-Jack it would make sense that he'd find his assets frozen and unleash his anger on the person who triggered his downfall.

Watching the movie again as an adult I always thought: "Kid, if this guy chooses to work alone rather than sharing with a hot, flexible superheroine, hell will freeze over before he'll pick you."

Whoa- I never considered the actual possibility that Buddy was actually a super- and his power was his intellect. It is absolutely possible, he couldve been the Incredibles version of Batman- intellectually and physically indomitable. And who knows what couldve happened if he had won against Mr. Incredible.

this is the first time I'm genuinely sympathetic to the plight of the villain. Buddy just wanted to help out, but he was shunned because he didn't have powers, and he was right about them not respecting him until he was a threat.

On the topic of animation, Leonard Dawson from Golgo 13 would make for another quality Analyzing Evil. Regarding Syndrome I like that he never seemed to grow up. A comment said Syndome never let go of the past, and it goes farther w/his childish mannerisms and personality at times. He got smarter, wealthier, but never "matured". His obsession drove him to such a point that he turns into a villain himself. Can't stop to look in the mirror, and part of me believes that deep down he truly sees himself as a superhero.

syndrome is a nice amalgamation of interesting villain mindsets which you appreciate more as you get older
