The first 15 minutes captures the ENTIRE problem with public service and leadership (or its absence) in Kenya and Africa generally. Lets not try and rationalize our way around it and kick the can down the road for another generation! President Ruto is on the hook because 1. He parades himself as a Christian and a "strong one" at that; and 2. He pushed an agenda for election hinged on representing the interests of the "hustlers" and not the established "dynasties" (or "old money" mostly acquired in these suspect means). So if anyone had the public motive to "Do right" by the people and the Republic it should be him! But we know what "Christian" leaders around Africa have done! To be fair, they have had to fight rather more sophisticated adversaries, but the battles were winnable with leadership integrity and strategic planning and follow through. My thesis is that Africans have NOT overcome the colonial era mindset where the government/administrative institutions were seen as the Colonialists or "White Man's" government/institution. So the idea that each group is sending its leading warriors out on the "hunt" to go and get a piece of this giant capture (known as the State) still dominates Africa's politicians and leaders. This is why it is always seen as a means to an end (the end being enriching oneself and their own people). It has NEVER (or perhaps extremely rarely) been seen as being given custody over or stewardship of the "peoples resources". They may have learned to talk the talk for the benefit of international audiences and sounding progressive, but African leaders know that these governing institutions are not truly their own! Secondly, the attitudw of the Colonial Master toward the native is the same attitude the African/Kenyan politician and public servant adopted and emulated...not all, but most. The rudeness, the violence, the neglect, etc. Our Continent's few Kingdoms are not run as corruptly and wastefully as our governments are for this reason. THUS THE TRUST DEFICIT THAT EXISTS! The chasm has been growing wider and wider since political independence and now very few Africans, be it in Kenya or elsewhere have ANY TRUST in government or public servants. Sorry for this long post, but this issue is at the crux of our Development + Finance problems.

I actually liked this conversation. Because you've simply distilled this to something I've, truthfully, been known to say. _How_ we do things matters a lot and is a huge determinant of our success in _what_ we do. I'm not pointing fingers at any one government. There have been colossal failures on this across the board. I find it really odd that our "leaders" really overlook this, which says something about their lack of leadership skills. It says that service to the people is not their main motivation. They might be great politicians, or even managers, but are not excellent leaders. Should we babysit our leaders with mandatory leadership training?

@@japhethkaingu487 Up to a certain threshold i would agree, but at some point the law of diminishing returns holds true. No doubt the capital and its environs have reached their elasticity limit. Affordable housing should be a project targeting arid and semi-arid regions(agriculture hostile areas). remember only 1/3 of the country arable
@Vhlathanosh6 ай бұрын
And to curb the migration you need to invest in infrastructure development. The government needs to invest into rail, electricity, internet; avail it to those people who are in the rural areas. But corruption and stealing is what rules Kenya and most African countries.

Of late I find Eric Latiff degrading the show by asking rhetorical questions that sides with the government, a journalist should never ask questions that have obvious answers because it portrays them as uninformed. He is not aware of the so called affordable house have a price tag that slum dwellers can’t afford. The people in the slums are there because they don’t have money not because they don’t have houses. To get them money u need to create jobs, housing creates no sustainable jobs. And you can’t export houses. Only mass export driven manufacturing creates millions of jobs where people will get the money and build their own houses.
