The music video of Marry The Night is the artistic way of retelling her past, as she says at the beginning: "it's sort of like my past is an unfinished painting and as the artist of the painting I must fill in all the ugly holes and make it beautiful again." So she randomly speaks French, healthcare workers wearing high heels, she is a ballerina at one point etc. are obviously not "real", they are just how she fills in those ugly holes (eg. her past of being sexually assaulted by producers and rejected by music labels). A similar concept is seen in the music video of 911, where the "ugly" reality is reinterpreted and represented in a more stylish and artistic way.

Also, her manager from Def Jam raped her. Denoucing him was what got her contract with def jam terminated (she was a unknown face at the time, the man simply had all the power over her x.x). That's why she was in the hospital in the beggining, and that's why faries fly out of her skirt in the balerina scene... it simbolizes her loosing her inocence as a person and as an artist ;/

Gaga was in the hospital with some health struggles, and when she got out, she was contacted by Def Jam letting her know they were dropping her. She then moved back to NYC, and she was signed to Interscope in 2007. This song is an encapsulation of that time period between when she was in the hospital to when she was scheduled to meet with Interscope.

Edge of Glory video is visually appealing but it stays one image for the whole video. Nothing changed. I thought they would at least have it start at night and transition through sunrise and maybe even end with all the people coming out of the homes at sunrise and bustling down the street over taking a breathless Gaga staring up the camera as it zooms out and fades to cut. Not real at all. Bc she used auto tune in The Fame and The Fame Monster. She was dropped bc they didn’t like the songs she wrote and were inpatient with her. She is raising pop videos to the level of high art. She has even woven Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 in there, which I believe she played herself. That's what distinguishes Gaga from all the artists who have preceded her. .. autobiographical yes, but with surrealist elements that you can't just subject to logical explanation. This video still awaits an adequate aesthetic appreciation. Gaga's talent is immense.

It took me a while (stupid man brain) to put together the clinic was most likely a domestic violence/ assualt ward of some kind. Considering Gaga told us she was sexually assaulted when she was first coming up in the music biz, that pretty much confirms it, id say. Then she gets dropped from her label, and it seems these things happened pretty close to eachother, hence her breakdown. She may have added somee choreography, glitter, and grease to the story but I bet this is one of her most honest and raw videos about her past shes put out

I think the video deals with a lot of abuse that she unfortunately had to suffer through before she got signed to Interscope (and in turn becoming exactly who she wanted to be/was meant to be), such as her horrible cocaine addiction, to her sexual assault(s), her bulimia, her self-hate, etc, etc... I always thought the ward was basically a Detox facility that she was at due to her drugs and alcohol abuse, but what you said does make sense. Especially with what @T said about the ‘no intimacy for two weeks’ bit

5:52 the scene is about being raped, when you saw her back earlier on it was red cause it was bruised by being beaten. she is talking about "making it" "becoming" a star in this moment, cuz sexual harasment is something many women are experiencing on their journey in this busyness, like she herself had to suffer.

I think she's just as good an actress here. She's realistically playing the part of a young messed up fragile girl. It's very convincing to me. She's also playing it in the anticipatory mode that it's in the venue of a music video. Not that this makes it any less of a performance, but it calls for a slight hint of drama...slight...that makes it a hint bigger than as if it was a movie about a young messed up girl.

I don’t think gaga has ever talked about if she had an abortion …. But I believe from this video she went through that. Her doctor is def some type of ob/gyn as she talked about delivering her. She tells her everything went well (referring to a procedure) and implies she’s being given morphine. Advises her no intimacy for 2 weeks. And gaga says she “has nothing left to lose”. Just my interpretation

6:31 I watched A Star Is Born for the first time earlier this week and I agree with you. Gaga plays a really good character where she eventually becomes a star. Like a real star. Gaga’s character Ally didn’t like to write songs because she didn’t feel like it. She also said she wasn’t going to make it because of the shape of her nose. Ally then went on to write Shallow and sing it with Jack in front of the grocery store to prepare for their performance. After this performance and Always Remember Us This Way, she started to win awards, perform on SNL and have a concert. Ally went in the studio and recorded Look What I Found, another original song. I can see how you’re relating this music video to A Star Is Born.

I mentioned it in the comments on the other video, but "Marry the Night" came out really when I needed it to. I'd loved the song all summer, but then the day before the music video dropped, I'd gotten in some pretty serious trouble at school (I was a junior in college). It was my own fuck-up, no question, but I felt like such dog-shit about it, especially because it was right around my birthday. I won't say the video made me feel "better", but it at least got me out of my head for a bit so I could actually enjoy a night out with my friends. Edit - Suddenly reminded of a cool detail in re-watching the video - Gaga's expressly saying she's not gonna let anyone else go through what she did if she can help it. Notice when her ballet audition starts going wrong (probably right after her sexual assault), no one came to help her? She's sobbing on the ground, top torn off, and these five other dancers won't even look at her. When she's at the new studio and the girl she's paired with hits the floor, what does she do? She immediately stops and pulls her up. I don't know if that other girl was someone who also got hurt by a producer or if she was just having a bad day, but I can imagine Gaga thinking "Oh HELL no, not on my watch" and getting the other girl back up before someone accidentally steps on her.

Nobody knew back in 2011 but looking at it now it makes sense, she was signed into DefJam Records at 19 years old in NY, some years later she confessed that she was rapped at 19 years old by a record producer and left pregnant 😢 but she was dropped by the label like 3 months after she was signed, I think about this period she had a mental breakdown and very dark thoughts, she did drugs, she cut herself and went through many difficulties but eventually went out, continued making music and I think this is the period when she met Lady Starlight and did a performance art piece with her on bars spraying cans on fire and then did a show at Lollapalooza in 2007, also working with producer Rob Fusari who gave her the name Lady Gaga and she went to LA and got signed to Interscope Records in 2007, wrote songs for other artists and eventually dyed her hair blonde and released her debut album in 2008. The Hospital scene and what happened at her apartment, cuz she was living alone in the lower east side of NY since she was 18 so, it makes sense to her tragic traumatic experience, she was hinting to that but told nobody until 2013 in ARTPOP era when she wrote an angry song called Swine about that bastard producer and went public with her sexual abuse, although she never said his name. Music is the thing that constantly saves her life and she made that clear on Chromatica that whole album is about dealing with her chronic pain from the broken hip and fibromyalgia and also her mental health issues as a consecuence of her trauma, but music has this healing energy that keeps her going. ♥️🙏🏻

My interpretation of her weirdly speaking in French has to do with what she says in the beginning, that she has to fill in all the ugly holes during a traumatic event. This music video has an interesting link to her latest music video 911, where we find out during traumatic events she paints them into much more sophisticated pieces of art in her mind. I think her speaking French might be one of those instances, where she painted the trauma of being dropped by her label into a more sophisticated moment in her mind.
