The video definitely had multiple meanings, similar to Marry the Night. It's exploring LGBT/DADT, religion, lost love and the military in general. The haircuts on the men along with the fire playing on the projector give images of Nazi Germany, plus the gun bra.

Alejandro is one of my all time favorite Gaga music videos. There's a lot of imagery so it's very easy for much of the symbolism to be overlooked. When working on the video, Steven Klein and Gaga wanted to depict her as a Joan of Arc figure to represent her devotion in fighting for LGBTQ+ equality at the time. Later in the video, she wears Saint Peter's inverted cross, (SP was persecuted on an inverted cross because he didn't feel like he was worthy to die in the same way as Christ), over her latex garment to represent her sense of unworthiness because she doesn't face the same persecution as others in the community. But as a martyr, she will endlessly fight for equality. The music video also pulls reference to "Cabaret" the musical. Where in the original production, the Kit Kat Klub was overtaken by a Nazi audience towards the end. Comparatively to the music video, the imagery is subverted to represent Gaga offering a safe space in her cabaret for men who are masking their identities to be their true selves (hence the men in fishnets). In the choreography you see this push and pull in both masculinity and femininity that uncovers and hides the truth of these soldiers. The video faced an immense amount of backlash from religious groups believing that she was spreading Satanic imagery but in reality, Gaga was urging viewers to question religion and the church and how both entities can affect culture.

Gaga GRAMMYs 2011 performance is key for your Born This Way Era deep dive. You can consider this order: 1. VMAs 2010 Video of the Year Acceptance Speech. 2. Born This Way (Single) 3. Born This Way (song) Grammys 2011 Performance. 4. Born This Way (music video) 5. Judas (single + music video) 6. Judas SNL Performance and/or XFactor (not sure if it was XFactor or Graham Norton performance of Judas) 7. Born This Way (ALBUM) 8. The Edge of Glory (music video) 9. The Edge of Glory (American Idol performance) 10. The Edge of Glory (any acoustic/piano performance). 11. Yoü & I (VMAs 2011 performance) 12. Yoü & I (Music Video) 13. Marry The Night (EMAs Performance) 14. Marry The Night (Born This Way Ball Performance - any country, whichever looks best to you). 15. Marry The Night (music video) And that should cover Born This Way through its singles. Another performance to consider is the full Born This Way Ball Tour show, there’s a few compilations on KZbin. And you can check out her “Monster Hall” (Sydney Hall) performances of Born This Way tracks.
