Onitsha is a city located in the southeastern part of Nigeria, specifically in Anambra State. It is considered the major commercial centers of the state, and southeast and is known for its vibrant economy, rich culture, and historical significance.
History of Onitsha
The city of Onitsha dates back to the 16th century, with the founding of the Onitsha Kingdom by the Igbo people. The kingdom was ruled by a series of monarchs and played a significant role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. It was also a major center for the production and trade of palm oil, which was a major export commodity in the 19th century.
In the early 20th century, Onitsha became an important center for education, with the establishment of several schools and the emergence of a highly educated middle class. The city played a crucial role in Nigeria's struggle for independence and was a major hub for the nationalist movement.
Economy of Onitsha
Onitsha is widely regarded as one of the most vibrant commercial centers in Nigeria, with a bustling market and a thriving entrepreneurial spirit. The Onitsha main market, which is one of the largest markets in West Africa, attracts traders from all over the region and beyond. The market is known for its wide range of goods, including textiles, electronics, and foodstuffs.
Apart from the main market, Onitsha is also home to several other smaller markets and shopping centers. The city has a thriving manufacturing sector, with several industries producing a range of products, including pharmaceuticals, plastics, and textiles.
Culture and Tourism in Onitsha
Onitsha has a rich cultural heritage and is known for its traditional festivals, music, and dance. The Ofala Festival is a major event in the city's calendar and is celebrated annually to commemorate the coronation of the Obi of Onitsha.
The city is also home to several historical sites, including the Onitsha Market Literature, which is a collection of literature produced by the market women of Onitsha in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The literature is considered an important cultural artifact and has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the Memory of the World program.
Tourists visiting Onitsha can also explore the Ogbunike Caves, which are located about 30 kilometers from the city. The caves are a series of interconnected limestone caves and are considered an important spiritual site in the region.
Onitsha is a city that is rich in culture, history, and economic opportunities. It has a vibrant market, a thriving manufacturing sector, and a range of historical and cultural sites that make it a popular destination for tourists. As one of the major cities in Anambra State, Onitsha plays a crucial role in the economic and cultural development of the region and continues to attract people from all over Nigeria and beyond.

@@tempusfugit1523 Abia state can have a seaport, a seaport doesn't have to be on a sea directly it just has to have a short direct access to the sea, and Abia state has that, onne seaport is almost same position as Abia state river or u don't know where onne is? Onne is not on the sea directly, it just has a channel to it and that's where they built a seaport, same way Hamburg in Germany is, the seaports was built on a river channeled to the sea, I don't know who told u guys a seaport must be built on a seashore....they can build one at Abia state then build fast trains connecting the SS and the SE so they can transport goods from there.

What a beautiful video by yangalife. I see a beutifull city with a total neglect,all the roads in Onitsha is in d mercy of commuters. From head bridge till the end of video,none of the roads is being sweep,I dnt knw why. Heeps of sand all over the roads. My question ⁉️ is why ist that govt is not given attention on cleaning 🧹 of our roads and drainages.

Thanks Steve. People will always talk about Onitsha been littered by refuse and there is nothing wrong with talking. Hoping that one day, those in authority will remember to put more energy to keep the city clean. Littered environment and dirty drainage is caused by poor waste management. Government gives attention to it but the attention is not enough. Onitsha waste management needs more dedicated hands.

Chima patrick. Upgrade yes. Very true and I believe you. Onitsha alone has 2 local government. The Onitsha metropolis is very large. When other cities around it are included. But considering Lagos is like referring to the whole of Anambra state. Don't forget that Lagos state is once the administrative headquarters of Nigeria. You can see the difference. Except if you are referring to the Lagos city inside Lagos state. Just like saying Victoria garden city in Lagos state. And you know Lagos state is the smallest state in term of land mass in Nigeria.

The Igbo people has cities that are vibrant for business. I don’t know what they are moving to other people’s cities for. Do they actually have an agenda of taking over other people’s land, because if truly Igbo cities are the most commercially viable cities in the whole Africa, why not stay there and be exporting your products to other places rather than struggling with the owners of other cities or countries. Ghanaian’s government has a special tax rate for Igbo traders in Ghana. The same thing with South African government. Now their behaviour in the South west is making the governments in the region having a rethink about their relationship with Igbo.
@YangaLife
@YangaLife Жыл бұрын
Tito Kamen, I don't know where the information of "Igbo cities are the most viable commercial cities in West Africa". No! it is not. But main market in Onitsha is the largest market in terms of size and quantity of goods. But let me answer your question. The Igbo people of Southeast Nigeria are known for their entrepreneurial spirit and their willingness to travel and settle in different parts of Nigeria and even other parts of the world in search of business opportunities. Lagos, as the commercial capital of Nigeria, offers a large and diverse market for various types of businesses, and as such, many Igbo people have migrated to Lagos to start businesses and take advantage of the opportunities available there. Additionally, Lagos is a hub for transportation and shipping, with its ports serving as major gateways for trade into and out of Nigeria. This makes it an attractive destination for traders and business people, including the Igbo people. Furthermore, the Igbo people have a long history of commerce and trade, and Lagos has been an important center of commerce in West Africa for centuries. This historical connection, coupled with the present-day economic opportunities, has made Lagos a natural destination for Igbo people seeking to engage in business activities. In summary, the Igbo people settle in Lagos for business due to the city's large and diverse market, its importance as a transportation and shipping hub, its historical connection to commerce and trade, and the presence of numerous economic opportunities.

How did they behave, envious witchcraft,let Nigeria govt build one sea port in Igbo land if you will see any Igbo business man in your pbrown roof republic, apart from look agos state being for the formal caital for 72 years show me any other south west state that is as well developed like lagos, these are the trible that came out of civil war, federal govt did not do the three R Gowon govt promised igbos developed their region without the assistant from federal govt, imo airport was built by imo indigenes, so what are you taking about, you yorubas envy and jealousy will kill some of you get a life pls. I prefer Igbo man to Yoruba person becos of your chameleon character abeg shift.
@youngman6981
@youngman6981 Жыл бұрын
Lagos was the federal capital territory of Nigeria for 77 years. Taxes and resources generated from different parts of Nigeria including the Igbos and Igboland were used to build Lagos. This is one of the reasons Igbos are many in Lagos. We understand that Lagos is no longer the federal capital. However, the Neo-Yoruba nationalists like you often ignore this very fact, i.e the fact that Lagos was not built by the Yorubas alone but by all Nigerian tribes, and the Igbos contributed greatly to that. As an Igbo man, it will interest me if Igbos can bring back their investment home and invest less in Lagos. That said, it amounts to crass ignorance for one to ask such a divisive question, "why are there Igbos in Lagos in large numbers" ? "Their behaviour in Southwest is making the governments in the region to rethink..." It would be interesting if you could explain what their wrongdoings in South West are because I haven't seen any. You made insinuations about South Africa and Ghana governments having special tax rates for Igbos, which is false. Igbos are foreigners in those countries, and if the governments of those countries decided to tax foreigners more, Igbos would be affected. Lastly, my advice to you Yoruba nationalists is this: If you all are tired of the one Nigeria which your grand fathers went to war to keep, what you have to do is to call for a dissolution of Nigeria. The Igbos cannot be in one Nigeria you all forced down our throat, and you will be dictating to us which part of the country to live. If you are tired of Igbo in your land, simply call for dissolution of Nigeria so that Igbos can leave your land in peace.. It makes no sense being together in a country where people tribes see each other as enemies.

Anambra's infrastructure has, if I'm being polite, an eclectic, albeit, rundown look. Otherwise , the place has no real character, no differentiating style, which is a shame since Anambra has a brand. It's Brand is Industrial. Future urban development related to government could emphasize futuristic industrial type architecture, softened by culture based urban furnishing, landmarks, and landscaping.

Infact, I thought as much in referring to the dualization. That road is the major road leading to the biggest market in Africa at the exit from the bridge into Onitsha. And a very busy road because of many other markets and businesses around there. At this level, Nigeria needs highly committed leaders at all level to bring the country to the reality of the present world situation.

Nice video. About your comment concerning Onitsha people calling non indigenes “nwaonyeigbo”, it is not special only to them. The term “Igbo” was originally used by any Igbo clan to describe non-Indigenes that share similar culture and language. Only with the start of colonialism did it now become a unifying term, but a lot of towns and clans especially outside the SE, refer to non-indigenes as Igbo. For example, when I refer to myself I am from my clan in Igboland, and I call myself Onye Ngwa, and other people outside my clan that speak my language I refer as ndi Igbo. It is not demeaning or an insult, but lack of understanding makes it like that. Igbos in pre-colonial history were isolated in their respective clans. Igbo unification is relatively new idea, that is why till today most Igbos in SS will say they are not Igbo.

Anambra state Governor need to take a page out of the Governor of Abia State to turn Onitsha into a Better City, 24/7 power supply, and rebuild the Onitsha Main market to a new standard. The people has been living in the dark and when you see another governor like Governor Otti of Abia State on providing the state with clean street, 24/7 power supply to home, Internet access, job opportunites, you want to emulates or compete against that. Government / private partnership can help solve alot of problem for state governments. The Media should have a monthly progress report from each commissioner or governor on key issues facing Onitsha, and steps being taken. Accountabliity is necessary.

Honestly, this city will look sooooo good and beautiful if Nigerians can be prevailed upon to stop messing up the environment. The making of a beautiful city is 50% governmental effort, and 50% citizenry effort. The government first and foremost has to build dedicated neighborhood markets, and then outlaw all street kiosks and street sellers. This is the same problem all over Nigeria. Too may street kiosks, with their filthy torn umbrellas and sellers and buyers alike littering everywhere. There must be trash/garbage cans on every block. No street kiosks or hawkers. Streets must be repaired, maintained and must be cleaned of trash and sand twice weekly. People must be stopped from just dumping sand and building materials on any road in front of their homes or buildings when they have constructions going on. Look at the guys at 26:21mins. He is mixing up some red sand right on the road there. Why won't the street be dirty and dusty with red sad? Laws must be enacted that no littering, no street dumping of any construction materials, etc. will be tolerated. Anybody who disobeyed must have a huge fine levied against him/her. The government must enact a zero tolerance for rule breakers. Then once the people have been brought into compliance, the government need to fix the roads, construct sidewalks. plants some trees along the streets, even put some potted plants at key locations, then cover the gutters. The government must also make sure people maintain their buildings and obey the laws.

He clearly hasn’t started well! For any state to work, the local governments have to be involved. I live in London, the local councils collect tax, waste, construct roads and maintain them, housing, schools, social public spaces, markets and business district, primary health care and work closely with TFL transport for London. London has 33 local councils that handle all these for the people living within the councils while the office of the mayor handles security, crime and investments coming to London and it does work so well. Why can’t we do same? I honestly thought he understood the assignment and how it should be divided, he can’t do all. The roads already awarded are next to nothing. In 2023, if we can’t have roads with all components like pedestrians walkways etc then we are clearly not moving forward.
@YangaLife
@YangaLife Жыл бұрын
Infact, you have analyzed the Anambra situation in a smooth and interesting way. As the presenter, I still have my contributions to make. Honestly speaking I don't know how we(Nigerians) came to be lagging behind in terms of standard public infrastructure. To build quality roads and keep a healthy environment is still posing huge challenges at this level. That is below whatever benchmarks we are using, that is, if there is any all. Secondly, the system London operates is a good one. Leaving some areas to the mayor while the council areas concentrate on others. Ours is different as the state government will be in charge of virtually everything. Which gives room for neglect and substandard attention. But let's not forget that the local government chairman according to the constitution has it's own job functions and yet they are been hijacked by the state government. What will guarantees this London system to be effective in Nigeria?

@@YangaLife , planning and execution. The local governments have to operate like private companies do, no room for error. Let’s say for waste management, collect data, very local government should know all roads, streets and the number of houses, markets,/ businesses in the local area then they make new policies on tax collection for waste or local government taxes for all services . They have to write every home / business places clearly stating the policies and what plans are being rolled out for waste collection / payment via direct debit so there must be registration before a set date and failure to do so will attract a fine.. They must deliver waste bins to homes and business places, these bins will differ depending on the type of home / business. These bins will come in different colours to help separate waste before collection. The collection will be once a week on the days set for different areas within the local government. All the people have to do is make sure on said days, the bins are neatly placed in front of the houses/ business and at the end of every month, people won’t blink twice as the payment lives their account to the governments account as payment for services rendered!

If some thinks that presently they are not seeing what they expected. It means that the inhabitants of the state will have to wait next time. And ensure that the person with vision and love is there in authority.

@Tempus Fugit, Really? Can you explain a bit further. Like do they still have any thing in common presently? And so on. Probably, some parts of early settlers in Onitsha came from that side. Thank you.

@Paul Edwin just went through some of his comments. I realised that I have actually responded to some of his comments earlier. However, I will let him understand and to reduce the use of strong words. Let's learn to tolerate each other. Do you know some viewers insults me sometimes? But I play it down. Thank you for calling my attention.

Am telling you, sometimes I wonder what wrong with us. Imagine someone calling Owerri a glorified village just to praise Anambra state. There are currently about two of them going about on all post relating to south east. Am from Anambra state but I find it insulting from any idiot to say Owerri is a village I mean How? We are all Igbo’s let’s behave like one, if you call Aba a dirty city normally me from Anambra should not be happy about it like wise same. We don Dey lose am small small everybody now defending his state forgetting the downfall of one state is an insult to all not just to the state.

@Ike Emmanuel yes but two wrongs can't make a right. Hope you get it? Calm down too. I remove cap for your observation. Charity should begin at home. Also, good character should start from home. Everyone is contributing to the table and that is the beauty of it. One love to everyone.

Point of correction. Asaba is not in any way part of Umu Eze Chima. Its real name is AHABAM which is self explanatory. The white people who came as part of colonisation mispronounced it as Asaba and it has come to be called Asaba. Asaba since not being part of Umu Eze Chima does not have OBI but the Asagba of Asaba. The last person who was like Obi in Asaba was one Dr Edozie. He tried to label himself as the Obi but he was corrected by the Obis in Delta State Ibo speaking people. Please do your research properly before coming to say your briefing because it could be wrong and misleading. Asaba if originally was a place of settlement for the Igbos and other people who settled in Asaba.A similar scenario applies to Igbo Uzor,but now called Ibuzor or Igbuzor. Thanks.

Thank you for the correction. But then which language does Asaba people speak and which language Umuezechime speaks?

Verify before saying what you don't know. Asagba of Asaba is the paramount ruler of Asaba, and must be an Obi before taking the throne. If it's a place of retirement then come and take your retirement.

This is a good achievement to the owners of the buildings, but your wordings are not advising the Igbo's to come back home and develop, but you talking about not values in our forefathers soil i don't like, do you want us to continue to be building and developing outside Igbo land just because of what value you think, it says that it's hands that make bushes to be a living and developed and be called city, so, please allow us to start off in developing our home land and stop discouraging our Igbo's well to do from coming back home, but by the way, who told you that nobody is living in those buildings or that the owners have no intention of coming back to settle in their place of birth, i bet you soon as security is bedded fine by the governors and the vigilant group, people will be going to Abuja and come back same day living in their mansion since we had our airport functional, just like some millionaire's in America and Europe do, some even has chopper, helicopter 🚁 to go their business daily.
