What is the time period of the Mahabharat? I don't mean the events described in it, rather the epic itself? When was it composed, or if we don't know it then what is the earliest mention of this story? I am asking cause apparently Mahabharat is quite strongly in favour of a monarchy, whereas there were states in ancient India during Mahajanapada period which were not governed by a king but by councils. So is the Mahabharat consciously against such a system of governance, or is it simply saying that a king is necessary because that was the norm when it was composed?

The Kuru dynasty ended around 1000 BCE. ASI did excavations in the area it identified to be the old Hastinapur. The final layers of the site were dated to 1000 BCE. As per the Mahabharata, Hastinapur was abandoned only a few generations after the battle of Kurukshetra. The writing of the epic itself therefore has to date from after that period... likely from a period before the Mahajanapadas came into prominence - between 1000 - 600 BCE. But that's for the core portions of the epic. The introductory portion esp. upto the Sambhava Parva are clearly appended to the original text, and were likely added in later periods.

Hi Jay, I really like the depth of knowledge that you have and that you want to impart to your audience, however I would like to point out and request you to please stick to the correct pronunciation. You seem to go for the anglicised version of the pronunciation of sanskrit words which really makes the word sound unoriginal and in a way corrupted. For example take the title of this video: It is spelled as मत्स्यन्याय which means there is the sound of "अ" after म & य of मत्स्य and after य of न्याय . However you are speaking it as मात्स्यन्याय. Hope you take it in a positive stride. Keep up with the hard work.

Just because both Sanskrit and Hindi both are written in Devanagiri, doesn't mean the pronunciation are same.Some languages from southern India which are closer to Sanskrit captures this well. M Letter in Sanskrit is pronounced as Ma, there are other caveats as well. I think you are speaking from the influence of Hindi. His pronunciation isn't anglicised or unoriginal, yours is Urdufied and corrupted. Please learn Sanskrit. We see this all the time from Hindi speaking populace. Wait till you find out it's not even Sanskrit, it's Samskritam.

Kautilya has told the real concept of matasya and manu. He tells that in the time of maharishi manu big peoples were bullying small ones like matasya or fishes do. Now after few 100s years when people became less educated and started making all these fake granths like purans and started this concept of avtaars. ईश्वर अकाय सर्वयापक निराकार निर्विकार अजन्मा अभय अमर है, वो इंद्रियों से परे है उसे अवतार लेने की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं। वेदों की और लोटो सत्य को जानो यह पुराण २ हज़ार साल से ज़्यादा पुराने नहीं, धूर्त और पाखंडियों की लिखी किताबे है। हर संस्कृत वाक्य प्रमाणित नहीं होता। ऋषि महर्षिओं की और लोटो। महर्षि वेद व्यास कृत वेदान्त दर्शन और उनके द्वारा योग दर्शन का भाष्य पढ़ कर तुम स्वयं समझ जाओगे ये पुराण महर्षि वेद व्यास द्वारा रचित नहीं है । There is a bavishya puraan talking about queen victoria, telling about akbar having words like sunday Monday. India is what I would call an "Enforced Anarchy". It's oxymoronic because Anarchy cannot be enforced. But how it works is, the constitution makes sure people don't have an actual government. Not having a constitution is equal to having no fetters on the ruler, which brings us back to the Matsya Nyaya as the ruler lacks effective checks against their actions, and since they have the monopoly of legitimate violence, they become the big fish who eat the small fish who dare question them. You are just speaking from some vague strong man fantasy. Effective government needs checks and balances to act as a corrective.
