Another great video thank you GV. Lady Mary died on November 21, 1833, at the age of 75. After a funeral service held within the priory’s great hall, she was laid to rest in a mausoleum built on the estate, on the site of an ancient fort on Walton Hill, a mile to the south of the priory. The surrounding woodland was christened Lady Mary’s Wood. Her brother’s ashes were also interred here. Sadly for Lady Mary, the mausoleum, like her stately home, was later abandoned and, left to the elements. It was broken into and now, overgrown, like her home abandoned and crumbling - was forcibly entered, coffins broken open and human bones scattered across the floor in a grisly act of sacrilege and wanton vandalism. It is a sad postscript to the history of her reclusive and religious life.

Holy smokes, I'm darned near speechless!! 😮😮😮 What an awesome structure, even in its current condition. There's no question the lady had a lot of money, the stonework and the attention to detail is amazing. And to think when that was built there was no such thing as building codes, yet its still standing over 200 years later. 👍 Thanks for sharing such an amazing location with us. 😁 Pete 🇨🇦

Those tiles by the staircase would have been a gorgeous sight at one time too. I love the idea of all your pets laid to rest in their own cemetary too. Ghe obvious love and grief for their pets raises them right up in my estimation.

What a wonderful place! Perhaps this 'Priory' was inspired by William Beckford's Fonthill Abbey in Wiltshire - another mock-ecclesiastical edifice completed in 1813. Fonthill was poorly designed and shoddily built, such that its impressive tower collapsed - but only after Beckford had sold it.
@myriadhues4573 ай бұрын
oh my word. The amount of detail in the architecture, even the tile of the floor beneath the grand stairwell was incredible. How sad to see it in such a state, but there is something strangely beautiful in so much nature claiming the structure.

and sadder still, the owners of the priory, the Baron's Cochrane actually want to demolish what's left of the priory. Though, according to wikipedia there are planners and locals who wish to see it restored instead.
