As we get further into Egypt's Second Intermediate Period, the arrival of easterners into the Nile Delta region creates a new political order that has country shaken to its core - or so historians such as Manetho have traditionally led us to believe. But who were these mysterious people known commonly as the Hyksos who created a dynasty of their own centered around the city of Avaris? We'll take a look at this and more in the latest episode on Ancient Egypt, Dynasty by Dynasty.

Josephus wrote in Contra Apionem 1:14 - "But that Thummosis, the son of Alisphragmuthosis, made an attempt to take them (Asiatics) by force, and by siege; with four hundred and eighty thousand men to lie round about them: but that upon his despair of taking the place by that siege, they came to a composition with them: that they should leave Egypt, and go, without any harm to be done to them, whithersoever they would: and that, after this composition was made, they went away with their whole families and effects, not fewer in number than two hundred and forty thousand; and took their journey from Egypt, through the wilderness, for Syria." Let's ignore the crazy numbers. The idea that Thebans (Ahmose I) made a deal with the Hyksos makes sense. Manfred Bietak found no other destructions in Avaris, except for the Hyksos palace in the NW part of the city. We know that Ahmose I pursued the Hyksos, sieged them in Sharuhen nearby modern Gaza, and destroyed the place.

The 17th is my favorite! Bring on Tetisheri! Now women will save Great Egypt and lay the foundation for her greatest dynasty. Straight outta Thebes. I believe they are the oldest royal Egyptian mummies which yet exist. I found it a bit wild that the image you showed associated with Apepi of the 'two men fighting astride a lion' also features prominently in the grave goods of Queen Ahhotep, whose husband was apparently killed or sacrificed under the same symbology. I guess for them, the story of Great Egypt was about two figures, the Pharoah and his Great Royal Wife. He may fall, but she will stand and guard his sons crown. This is how it always was since the first Queen of Egypt. Women of Thebes, rise up.

I guess it depends on how you look at it, but shouldn’t it be the 1st dynasty of the Hyksos kingdom? I feel like the order of dynasties is a bit confusing since they sometimes co-exist and rule over different parts of Egypt.

Hi Cy! Would you consider using Egyptian names for their cities and locations when we know them. Such as Men Neft instead of Memphis?

That's a good question and sometimes I do give the original name of the city when first introducing it (like Nekhen for Hierakonpolis) but the thing is that I also want the viewers to not get confused. Hence, I generally use the more popular/well known names not just for places but also people (Sennacherib instead of Sîn-ahhe-eriba or Sargon instead of Sharukkin). Only using the original is difficult to remember if you're not used to it. Great question though and thanks for watching!

I dunno, I like "Apepi", it is simple and sounds pretty good. And I don't think Merdje and Merde are pronounced the same way or even close to it. ;) I think the lesson is more that you shouldn't think "I wait a few years invading Thebes, no hurry", they had a century taking it but didn't bother. Not inviting the really poor neighbors to your luxury party seems wise, they might get ideas...

The Hyksos were the party that ruled as pharaos until they were expelled, eventually sieged and defeated in Canaan, by Jah- Moses a.k.a. Ahmose who claimed his god Amen did it.

A good example of the Egyptian public scenes painted on the walls never were true... Ramses and the Hittites for example... The Great battle of Kadesh was a very close call for the Egyptian army... According to the Hittites about the very same battle nearly cost Ramses his own life... He took a small force into an ambush and managed to hold off the attackers until the Egyptian army caught up with their Pharoah who was fighting for his life... In spite of the Fantastic display of Pharaoh defeating the Hittites, it was a blatant lie...At best the battle was a draw.... The Egyptians liked to portray great victory on the temple walls of the Rameseum... The",Hyksos" were more than likely the Israelites.... I'm not gonna argue with any one.... It seems to fit....

I do find your videos interesting , although we read the history of Egypt through the eyes of Greek historians who lived 1500 years after the actual events and came from a society that was inferior to Egypt. The name itself Egypt ,. is a Greek name and not the name of this actual land so are they just hypothesizing about Egypt, who knows . Egyptologist seem to be completely bias and refuse to acknowledge any counter narrative to their status quo I would like to get the perspective of Sudanese historians on Egypt . Egyptian history isn't written by the Egyptians but Europeans, who were more interested in looting. But if Egyptians want, they can, based on archeological records, can write their history. Until such time that the history is not provided to the world, Egypt will remain in the dark, it seems impossible to reconstruct its history.

Cy re read the history it was bloody, slave or death is what I’ve read… you keep forgetting about the peace treaties. There are reasons…the cities that gave up without a fight… were surprised by the way the first wave infiltrated the complexes and took out the little militaries they had posted… these guys came up through the sphinxes, the pyramids and temple pools from underground canals which led to the Nile… their main symbol…the ankh is a subterranean canal symbol.
