Since we did not have Suez canal in those times, it's difficult to imagine small rickety sail boats going round the cape of good hope and tackle 10-20 feet swells. Are we sure boats went directly from Indian ports to Roman ports? I think more likely, Indian boats only went up to middle east countries and the rest of the journey was overland. We do know trade with India existed cause recent excavations in Pompeii have thrown up Indian spices in the stomachs of Roman slaves buried alive by the volcanic eruption 2K years back.

India had the best ships, (until the British destroyed them) ......When the season changed and for 2-3 months the winds blew towards Europe, circa 150 ships used to leave India with the finest clothes , spices, ornaments etc, for Rome. Rome as you know controlled and collected vast amount of taxes from its empire. After reaching Rome, the ships would stay docked for 2 months......by which time the wind blew towards India and the ships would sail back to India. Research it properly, it is true....such that the Roman Senate who documented everything, complained that too much gold was leaving Rome for India The British colonialists have been masking and twisting history, the real truth, for their ill agenda, for over 200 years You refer to the silk road which is another trade route from China/India to Middle East and into Europe
