I left that bubble I was living in years and years ago. This new SATC writing looks more like life as I know it I've been able to relate to so much. My daughter started showing signs around that age, and guess who told me she was gay: my mother😄So when she told me she was in fact bi 4 years later: I shrugged my shoulders, and said "Duh." She was even more stunned when I told her your grandmother told me years ago.

the show speaking on how gender dysphoria effects teenagers in the modern era isn't the problem the problem is the writers have no idea what gender dysphoria is or how teenagers actually act and they try to make it come off as charlotte being ignorant when she's just genuinely confused since her child decided to make them a TIKTOK indirect instead of explaining to her in person why they changed their name before charlotte got the news from everyone else ... How is she expecting the parents to take seriously something this important if she announced on TikTok for the followers instead of the parents?. Where the seriousness of the situation? Transitioning, and gender is not something to joke or take it easy.
@ascent84872 жыл бұрын
@nakedcapitalist, according to the data most children grow out of gender dysphoria. This topic is a lot more complex than both sides seem to want to grapple with. Nut job Bible beaters on one side calling trans people an abomination in the eyes of God, refusing to accept this is a legitimate human experience for some of us. And advocates rushing to transition at the drop of a dime seemingly in order to feel evolved or enlightened, almost more so than acting in the interest of the child. Like that ought to be the universal response or else. It’s frustrating.

If my kid made a terrible TikTok announcing their new identity like that I wouldn’t take them seriously at all. I’d think the whole gender thing is not even serious and they’re just trying to get attention or fit in and I’d tell them gender identity is not a joke and that thousands of people suffer every year from it.

Nothing against trans people but the way the media handles this is just ridiculous. Less than 1% of the population belong to the trans community. If Rose grows up and is one of them then it is fine but can't she just be a tomboy? I think I am pretty liberal when it comes to equal rights but changing your name for yourself when you are 12 is just incredibly weird for me I mean you have a name what your parents gave you and can't just change that until you are 18. And everybody (teachers, society) accepts this? When I was a little girl I wanted to be a little princess but nobody referred to me as Your Majesty😂😂😂If this woke nonsense doesn't stop that is gonna be the fall of Western cultures.
@natashafluffy11152 жыл бұрын
I think kids are allowed to change their first names at 12 which is fine if they don't like their given name, but NO WAY the school should hide this from the parents. And nor should the children be encouraged to. The percentage of individuals in a population who are actually trans is very small and insisting anyone who isn't happy with society's gender norms must be trans is polticall. What society defines as gender appropriate changes through time and cultures . Its not static.

This is the best example I can find of a show just wanting to get woke points and not caring about a believable story. It's more logical and diverse to give Charlotte the struggle of Rose, or Lily becoming devoutly Jewish, and expecting their parents to do the same and how hard it is to actually follow everything. Diversity is supposed to make something relatable to a larger audience and also widen people's views of the world. A storyline about religion would be interesting, educating and work. The way the woke plots of ajlt are executed are so fake. Everyone is choosing the same specific groups to portray. If anything, things are becoming less diverse.
@madelynweathers32692 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think it’s also very condescending to treat the audience like this. It shows insecurity in the writers because they’re just trying to score points instead of making something good.

Did you watch the original SATC? There were numerous elements of their lives that were completley unbelievable. There were elements portrayed about life in NYC that were pure fiction. Yet, nobody seemed to have a problem with "unrelatability" and "aspirational" fantasy then. So, you're not going to convince me that this is actually about "relatability". Especially when part of the appeal of SATC in the first place was that it was aspirational fantasy which by definition is unrelatable. Second of all, your suggestion around "jewish identity" as a diversity storyline with Rose is ABSURD and completley unrealistic. Most children when they are young tend to be MORE liberal and open minded than their parents. Some grow out of it, some don't. That's just how youth tends to works. Rarely is a child (especially when they're young) MORE conservative or religiously devout than their parents. Especially, if their parents aren't conservative or devout either! Furthermore, religious fundamentalism is loosing it's hold in American society. The idea that Rose, a Gen-Zer living in NYC in 2021 would be a devout Jew at her age and in this cultural context is a preposterous idea and thus completely unbelievable. It is far more likely that living in NYC in 2021 she would be exploring her gender identity. Frankly, at this cultural juncture that’s far more plausible than her being a devout Jew. It's also very believable that Charlotte would be thrown off kilter by this development. Yes, most teens aren’t confused about their gender, but for those who are Charlotte and Harry are reacting in ways most parents would……with confusion and bafflement. This storyline is totally believable down to Rose posting her announcement on Tik Tok before having an actual conversation with her parents first. Parents playing catch up to the ever evolving nuances of youth culture and experience is not “unrelatable” to any parent. Even if the viewer can’t relate to the specifics of gender identity confusion the overarching experience of grappling with your adolescent child’s increased independence and movement away from your values, beliefs and norms is universal!! Why don't we talk about why folks are actually mad. You're triggered that this topic of gender identity is even being brought up in the first place. If you were being intellectually honest, you’d admit that you view the topic in and of itself as ‘woke’ and there is really no way SATC could have brought it up without you feeling like it was “cringe” or “heavy handed”. Which means that what you want is actually the opposite of what you’re critiquing AJLT for. What you want is AJLT to continue SATC’s long running streak of unbelievable fantasy and not address or talk about any current real world sociocultural issues. What you’re implicitly asking for is an unbelievable world where these issues don’t exist…..which inherently is unrelatable. The irony is rich. Instead of owning your own baggage regarding the issue of gender identity you’re deflecting and making it about AJLT being “too heavy handed”. I just watched the scene and it was surprisingly balanced. This tells me that instead of grappling with the material actually presented in the scene you're projecting your own fragility onto it. You're so triggered by the possibility that you're being lectured, or preached to, looked down on, or judged, or propagandized that you can't actually appreciate the nuances of this scene. If you actually saw the scene for what it was, you’d realize that there are actually subtle critiques of the gender identity movement and the humorous absurdities of trying to accommodate ever evolving expectations. For example, even them picking the name “Rock” I believe was a subtle commentary on these absurdities. The fact that she told everyone on social media and not her family directly was a commentary on the generational divide in etiquette, but also the unrealistic expectation that her parents just “get with it” and “know” that this is the new world order and no big deal. The constant disbelief that they were now supposed to be calling their child a completely different name with seemingly no warning, no adjustment period, and no compromise. What I took away from this scene was that these issues are hard on everyone and that nobody is wrong or bad for struggling with them and that the gender identity movement is not morally above satirization.
