He used to gold mine and Alaska and had some different sluice boxes and gear that he would frequently use. He even did a little bit of shallow diving with the vacuum thing. We went gold panning with him when we were there and it was really fun.

I love that corn cob. I wish I knew what they use to get that dark finish on it... I would like to darken one of my country gentlemen and put a custom stem on it. Of course I’ll have to modify the stem too since I’m a filter smoker, but it would be a cool project. I just don’t know what is safe to use as far as dye or stain...

@@airadaimagery692 maybe someone will chime in, but from my understanding, it is safe to dye pipes with the leather dye. There seems to be different opinions on whether to put some other kind of coating on cobs. I like this cob also! Very special!

@@carolinarose704 hey thanks! Good information. I’ve only been playing around with tobacco pipes for about two and half years. I started with a corn cob, then bought 2 nice Briar pipes, and I like my Briar pipes, I just keep gravitating back to the corn cobs. I have 3 cobs now. I started pulling the shanks(?) out and cutting that part out that sits in the bottom of the bowl, and now I’m experimenting with leveling off the bottoms. I guess I just like to tinker with stuff! Lol.. But the leather dye sounds like a good idea. It would be cool to know if there is some sort of safe option for a gloss finish as well... Thanks so much!

I may be totally wrong, but it seems you're making the #1 "mistake", ( if you're enjoying it, it doesn't matter), that pipe smokers make, new & old. Puffing in & puffing out. This can cause the tobacco to burn to hot, causing tongue bite & a bad mouth taste. Try the "breathing method". I've been smoking pipes on & off over 35 years & recently discovered this myself! So much more enjoyable! There are plenty of videos teaching this on KZbin. Try it, you'll be amazed at the difference!!
