I think every KISS fan groaned when you said you were going for an Ace Frehley/Tommy Thayer vibe and then immediately played two Bruce Kulick era songs! The tone was pretty nice though. Particularly the Bass!

Yep! Those 2 songs are super strat/ESP with kinda scooped mids. Frehley/Thayer might have been better with a hughes and kettner for modern kiss but still playing the classics. Frehley is just glassy marshall with low gain. Nothing crazy special. Love these videos but mehh....there was really nothing to 'replicate' here. LP and marshall...

Exactly. And then stated he needed a whammy bar that the les paul didnt have. Wrong guitar. Bruce used a lot of strats. And the whole Gene thing was a complete debacle. A P Bass would have been perfect. Most of Genes basses are P based. Although he was rocking some Pedullas during the crazy nights era.

Just as a heads up, two of the songs were from the Bruce Kullick era, he was the lead player for most of the 80s through 96.

What’s the point of trying to sound like KISS, emulate Ace Frehley specs, then start with two songs that had nothing to do with Ace Frehley? Also KISS had also used Fender amps in addition to Marshall’s in the studio. To be honest it doesn’t even have to be a Les Paul. He used a super distortion in the bridge- exclusively. 100-watt marshals, and occasionally an EHX Line booster. Do this again, break the bank, and try to sound like the KISS Alive! Record. Which really is the standard for KISS tone. If you really want to get detail oriented, you can add an octave pedal. Probably a mutron.

My buddy was Ace's tech & Ace only used 1 Dimarzio Super Distortion he also changed in later years as of 2019 when I seen him from using 4 hole plexies & was using JCM800s. Old KISS tone was very much different then when Vinny Bruce & later Tommy replaced him. Ace also used black backs. KISS really changed tone over the years & they didn't realize it until Ace & Peter rejoined & Gene & Paul argued that they didn't but then realized they did.

During the ‘crazy crazy nights’ era or ‘the ritz on fire’ Bruce was actually their guitarist. If we’re going for classic KISS sounds I would score out Vinnie and Bruce. Ace and Tommy sound pretty much the same because Tommy was his guitar tech and he just kind of copies him now. So the songs I would go for are basically anything from the first album, Alive, destroyer or love gun. I would be aiming for the sound on those albums to get ‘classic KISS’

Well Tommy’s better at guitar technically as Ace was mostly self thought and because of that he developed a style that no one can really copy and neither can Tommy. Tommy’s solos are pretty boring in comparison to Ace’s in my opinion

The sound of the Gibson Rippers / Grabbers are the basses that imo are hardest of them all, to replicate. That is why Krist Novoselic of Nirvana and Gene Simmons have such a destinctive sound. Nothing sounds like those basses. And yes, I know everything wasn't recorded with those, but you can hear it when they use them, I think. :)

KISS is difficult because what era do you concentrate on and do you go live sound (Dimarzio super distortion and Marshall) or do you go studio (Tele and Fender amp)...talking about 70's here. 80's/90's was EMG's and Floyd Roses. Or now with Duncans and Hughes and Ket. Might have to go By Busting to really make it work.

Pick one, or a number of guitars, or have a second person pick. Determine 5 bands or, a number, that other person will have to cover. One to multiple covers of those number of bands. The pedals can be limited by number or type as can the amp.

Ace Frehley's tone had less bass and more high-mids, more presence if you like. It was a little brighter overall than the tone you achieved here.
