I feel like G&L tend to get ignored because they don't have the full on 'Fender' trade mark and sometimes they can look a bit odd in comparison to more traditional designs. It just shows though that Leo, who largely poplularised the electric guitar, was still innovating and was generally far more accepting of new ideas than many of the people around even some 31 years after his death.
@steventhompson8602

The G&L’s are light years beyond fender, the pickups, saddle lock bridge, and one of the best stock Trem’s of all time. But the majority want the logo and to be part of the “lifestyle brand” and plus G&L doesn’t pay anyone to play their guitars, so they don’t have a high profile presence, so people pass them by. And it’s a real shame because they are missing out.

Greg Koch has said many times that the allure of the late '50s Les Pauls was that they sounded like "fat" Teles. The ASAT Special comes at this from the single-coil side of the equation. The jumbo MFD pickups are hotter than trad Tele pickups. They will push the front-end of an amp really nicely, yet they are clean and articulate. One nice thing about the MFD pickups is that they will really cut through a mix.

Exactly! Convinced that the only reason Page ever moved from Teles to LPs is because of the 60s cycle hum that would have killed him in stadium shows, but I’ve never been able to confirm my suspicions.

I've played the original G&Ls back in the day and back then the thought was "if I want a Strat, I'll buy a Strat". That was then. Earlier in the year I traded a Deluxe Nashville Tele for a Comanche Tribute with the tobacco/honey burst burled top. I'd seen them around and was fascinated by the pickup configuration so I said what the hell, I don't use the Tele anyway. I play professionally and carry 2 guitars with me at every gig, sometimes 4 or even 5 times a week. The Comanche comes with me every gig. More often than not my PRS S2 comes with me as well and I find myself playing the Comanche more during the night. If I need to really drive my Helix I use the S2 but more and more I use the Comanche. I've owned all the major brands having Les Pauls, Strats, Guild, Carvin and Ibanez and this guitar ranks up there among all the best.

Every player who loves a well built guitar, with genius design features, OWES themselves a G&L guitar. I have owned 3 of them (ASAT Classic, USA Legacy and a Doheny) and each one, to me at least, was the finest of that style guitar I had ever played. Whether they had MFD or Alnico pick ups, the chime and versatility were phenomenal. I also love that you are featuring the Emerald Blue and Andromeda colors in this video both are very hard to photograph and need to be seen live to appreciate how they stand out among other standard colors.

I found out about G&L about 12 years ago. There was another online guitar retailer in the Pacific Northwest of the US and whenever they did a pedal demo, he would say "I'm playing my G&L Legacy into a '65 amp SoHo (or something like that). I never heard of G&L but got curious, so once I heard it was Leo Fender's final company I was intrigued and ordered a custom build from them. It was a T-style ASAT Bluesboy with a humbucker in the neck position. Clear orange over swamp ash with white top binding. Maple fingerboard, white pick guard. When it arrived I was blown away by the build quality and how beautiful it looked, and then I plugged her in and WOW. Such great tone. I then ordered 3 more G&Ls over the next 10 years so I have 4 now, love 'em! Thanks for this video, everyone should know about G&L!

The Tribute Comanche usually comes with a push/pull pot to engage neck and bridge or all three pickups. Added value/versatility. Wasn't mentioned in Pete's sound test. I own a number of G&Ls all with their own sound and vibe. Went a bit G&L crazy after I visited the factory and their booth at NAMM back in January 2019.

Paul Gagon was previously with Charvel and Fender. He worked on the design of the "Clapton boost circuit". From what I've read, Leo did not want to produce Fender "copies", but the feedback his sales reps were getting pushed him to support the idea. It was not fully adopted until after his death, however. The alnico pickups that G&L supplies with their guitars were based on Leo's modifications and designed by Paul Gagon. If anyone has factual information to contradict this, feel free to comment.

Yep. As has been mentioned, the Doheny is named after the beach. It's at least one of the 1st few California beaches (back when Southern California was a good place to be) where the original "Surf" sound was made popular. But, as with most original sounds, and other world changing stuff, the surf sound was likely actually born in someone's bedroom or garage.

G&L is fantastic! I went through a LOT of Fender Strats.....and sold them all...trying to find something to fill that Strat sonic place for my Musical Tool Box. Then I found a G&L S-500. That was pretty nice. It felt right in my hands finally. Oh! ..but then I found a G&L Legacy! U.S. made version with a 3 tone sunburst finish (my S-500 was a metallic Red with a little "Sparkle" ...and that okay, but...). I sold my S-500 knowing it would rarely be used again! This Legacy...... I got it back when Leo was still in the Shop! He knocked it Out Of The Park! What a GREAT Guitar! In every way! I also had an ASAT Special for a while in Blue Metallic. I liked that a LOT! But I decided to build my own T-Style because I still didn't like the Single-Cut shape of the G&L. (I made my own version of a Double-Cut T-Style ... my own headstock shape...AND a humbucker in the middle position with a 5 way switch. (and..... The Emerald Blue ... is ..... BLUE! More Blue than Green!) "Doheney" is a beach in Southern California! I love it when you guys go into a JAM! SWEET!

The Fallout is inspired by the SC 1 and 2, that were modded a lot as Lee said. They still sell the SC2, only USA made. There was also an SC3, which evolved into the S500 if I am not mistaken. I wish they released a tribute version of the SC2, it's amazing. There is a demo by Andy of Proguitarshop and you can see it's very versatile, sounds round and nice played clean, and like a thunder when you add some distortion. Pd. there is also a MFD "humbucker" style pickup: the f100 :)

Thanks for the vid guys. It is time someone opened other guitar players eyes to these products, particularly those in UK. The US models are cool and competitive, and the Tribute Series are very keenly priced and not a long way behind the US models. I have a 2009 Legacy Tribute which came with standard Strat style wiring. I have had a Passive Treble and Bass (PTB) style set of pots added and have a push pot to make a 7 way selector. I changed the bridge pup to a SD SSL6 but will probably look to replace it with a mini humbucker. I bought the Legacy in 2011 for £425 and the mods and setup have taken the price to circa £610, but it is now an awful lot of guitar, especially since the pots upgrade. I recently sold a MIM Tele and will replace it soon with an ASAT Tribute. I am brand sold on G&L and the only other brands I would look at are the Yamaha Revstar range, and some Harley Benton gems.

A bit unrelated, but can I ask how much it cost you to fit the push pot that makes it a 7 way switch, please? I was thinking of putting one in my strat. Does it let you play in-phase when you're using middle/neck pickups (sounding more like a gumbucker than two single coils)?

Thought I had all my dream guitars including a tribute fallout and an Espada (the crown jewel of my guitars) but I think I've just found a new "have to have this" guitar. That andromeda black is killer. If I didn't already have a fallout, I would be ordering that shell pink one tonight.

I wanna hear more about Doheny beach. Maybe this will evolve into a beach review channel?

That's Dana Point just north of San Diego. Good surf beach but not as good as Rincon south of Santa Barbara.

I'd love to see a shootout video between Fender, Music Man, and G&L!

If you spend around 1,500 to 2,000 on a Fender, you are getting like their 3rd best guitar. If you spend that much on a G&L you are getting a USA made Fullerton Deluxe that is the rival of any solid body builder out there, including the PRS Silver Sky (I admit to having no knowledge of Music Man). So a shoot out just wouldn't be fair.

My first real guitar was a G&L Legacy. It was awesome. But it was made to be more fendery with a vintage radius and non MFD pickups. Had a tribute S500 for a while. It was good but as Lee and Pete say it wasn't a strat to ally, so it was hard to switch between it and my strat in the set.
