As a Canadian, this made my day; you guys absolutely nailed it. I'm also liking the recent uptick of Rabea and Matt picking "all-in-one" amps like the Katana; they might not be as drool inducing as a smorgasbord of pedals, but their practicality is next to none when you have a lot of effects ground to cover. The only thing it would be good to see in these cases is a description of some of the settings for specific tones in these cases, even if it's just "I'm using the boost on the red setting, about halfway up, and the delay on the green setting about a quarter way up."

to be fair... this really sounds like Bryan Adams. Now do Rainbow era Blackmore
@RackhirTheRed7 жыл бұрын
First you have to find one of those old tape machines to plug into for a preamp. Good luck with that. After that a cranked Marshall or Engl and Strat will do. Turn the volume to 10, bass to 0 and crank the mids and highs/presence. After that it's all the guitar's volume knob and bouncing between the bridge and neck pickups. NEVER use the middle pickup for anything. Ever. In fact you should go ahead and disconnect it just in case! Oh...and you have to practice your but off incessantly until you become a master that's one with his guitar. That's your sound like Ritchie Blackmore.
@jameslewis26357 жыл бұрын
I think the Katana and Strat rig was pretty close to Richie Blackmore's sound from the Machine Head / Made in Japan era. I can't really remember him doing much in terms of wah pedals or any other effects that the Katana could not do with the possible exception of the old tape machine he insisted on using as a pre-amp which was so unreliable it needed its own specialist to keep the thing running. Something subtle like a Klon might do something similar but I would not be able to recognise it from the tone (just going from the legend on this bit). While he was legendary for using the Stratocaster, a Telecaster might be a better tonal match because he disconnected his middle pickup but used both bridge and neck pickups for 'Smoke on the Water'. Another possible guitar would be an H/H config strat with coil splitting.
@RackhirTheRed7 жыл бұрын
I was Just joking around. All of his Marshals were heavily modded and his sig Engl amp is very unique. He modded his strats with something called a "MTC unit" AND he used a tape unit as a preamp and delay/reverb. I guess these guys could do a "Close enough to Blackmore" with off the shelf stuff but a "Sound Like" up to their usual great standards? Umm........ That would be a very unfair challenge.

Until the Andertons folks cover it, here's what I've pieced together: Claudio tends to favor Explorers and some SGs, though those tend to come out on the 12-string/baritone songs. There aren't a ton of budget Explorers out there, but the best I could find for the price was the Goth '58 Explorer ($499 on Sweetwater) - the color isn't really right, and Claudio uses Nailbomb pickups generally, but stock it's got a bite to it that seems very Coheed and (mostly) looks the part. As for amps, they use AxeFX live now but Claudio's tech has said that his main tone is based on a Marshall-y distorted lead. The DSL40C would be great here, but I'd go for the CODE 100W 2x12, as it's quite a bit cheaper at $399 and has the programmable presets and whatnot, which is good for some of the weirder Coheed stuff. For pedals, your focus would be on distortion (if you choose to not use the built-in marshall distortion), an overdrive (just get a Tube Screamer), Wah, Delay and Reverb. If you choose to forgo the CODE's distortion, I'd recommend an MXR M78 Custom Badass. Wah is IMO down to personal preference here, but for delay I'd just recommend a Boss DD-3, as it will cover most of what you need. For reverb, I'd probably go with an EHX Holy Grail Nano - simple, but gives you enough options to make your tone fuckin huge. All told, this rig would come to about $1,420 (nice), but without distortion and wah you could get down to about $1,240. Travis basically is a Les Paul that has somehow attained human form. The Epiphone equivalent of what he uses for the most part is a LP Standard Plain Top (but take off the pickguard) at $419. And honestly, most of the above rig works for Travis as well as his chain is fairly similar. That said, Travis's tone is more based on a Mesa Boogie Mark V, but according to Trav it's mostly just a more washy, reverb-y Marshall tone. So by changing some of the settings on the above rig, you could most likely get pretty close to Travis's default tone. Hopefully that helps!

Hi guys. I've been watching your series from the start and have noticed you very rarely mention HOW you achieve the sounds (especially as you're using Katana's for this one). I'd assume that a lot of beginners watch these videos and are still finding their way around guitars and amps so, I think it would be really useful for them if you'd say what pick-up selection, pedal settings and amp settings you are using for each tone. I've personally found it helpful to show students how to get the tones their heroes get - well, as close as possible with the gear they turn up with so, I recommended them to invest in a Boss Katana, they're brilliant for this kind of scenario, in that you can set the basic amplifier type and build upon that with; gain, tone and effects. Anyhoo - keep up the (on the whole) good work :-)
@kingoffools19887 жыл бұрын
That is exactly what I was thinking. Maybe you can do a separate video, where you show how to dial in that tones, that you are using in the sound like video.

"Little Mountain Sound Studios is a music recording facility located in Vancouver, British Columbia. During the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, it was the most successful recording studio in Western Canada and was the home for many years to producers Bruce Fairbairn and Bob Rock. Little Mountain recorded albums by Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Metallica, Bryan Adams, Mötley Crüe, David Lee Roth, Loverboy and the Cult among many others. In the mid 1990s". aka the "black album" & "dr feelgood". In addition, the Neve consoles used, contributed; As well as Bryan Adams has a vast selection of vintage microphones.....
