@ithemba
@ithemba 3 жыл бұрын
@@lo3572 there absolutely are SS amps that can go really loud and do it brilliantly, given they run into a decent cab (most of the amps we tend to think about when thinking SS lack at that certain area). Buuuut I'd say: for certain kind of sounds, say: 60s mid-gain sounds, valve still has a different response and will do a better job than any (non-digital-modelling) SS. but it has its reasons why nearly every really important high gain sound on any heavy record was based at least partially on pedals. The differences in "harmonic structure" as rob puts it get less and less pronounced the more gainstages you stag together. He obviously was listening for a certain kind of sound which he identified as "valve" (maybe a bit more into overdrive territory than compressed higain) which led him to misidentifying every hi gain amp in the video.
@lo3572
@lo3572 3 жыл бұрын
darillio I recently tried a lauded Marshall Valvestate (the one Chuck Schuldiner used) into a H&K 4x12 with V30’s & it was horrible. Sounded just like a remember SS amps to; squishy bottom end & piercing highs with no body at all. The louder it got, the worse it sounded. Compared to even a bad tube amp there was no comparison

Would be cool if Rob made a video on what he listens for in those blindfold tests. Or instead of a dedicated video, a quick explanation every video would be great. Just like he did in the actives vs passives challenge where he explained to Lee how he listened to the feedback to figure it out. Would work for guitars too, explaining for example the differences in neck shapes from company to company. Not that most of us had any practical use for it, I just think it's interesting to hear how the different stuff works and how that effects things.

Very entertaining as always! Rob is a fantastic guitar player! I would enjoy some of these blind shootouts with clean sounds and not the high gain sounds we’re used to hearing

What does he have against the EVH 5150 III? He never likes it, but it always sounds so good and this is one of the most used metal amps from bands all the way from Steel Panther to Belphegor for several years.

Metal Head Productions I think it's just personal taste. I don't like Robs tone in general in these video's.

Honestly I never cared for them very much either until I played one specific 100w head at a shop a couple months ago and bought it a few days later. I fell in love with the sound of the MXR 5150 pretty much as soon as I heard it though. I always liked the sound of the 5150 III when other people played it but I couldn't ever get them to sound good for me for the longest time.

I've got the 6L6 version in 50W and 100W Stealth versions and love them. The 50W EL34 is getting a lot of flack for a loose flubby bottom end on the blue channel. No idea if they used the blue channel here.

i think rob juts don't like the sound of a 6l6 tubes, 6l6 can sound a little fizzy in the top end it might create the perception that it is a digital amp.

Didn't like the 5150 III EL34 either, so I think it's just a matter of dialing things in really. The Kemper wins with a specifically dialed in amp, almost like the ultimate setting possible. The Kemper is definitely on my wish-list, although I would prefer a combo (makes more sense in the home than a head/cabinet combo for me).
