Knowing in hindsight that Kino couldn't swim and knew there was only "one way out," the "die fighting than giving them what they want" and "I'm going to assume I'm already dead" hits hard. The writing in this show comes full circle.

Andy said in an interview that he knew the ending and played episode 10 with that undertone in mind, and it shows subtly in that performance. Kino knew he wasn't getting out. I’ve tried to learn a few times but there’s some kind of panick-y fear that shows up as soon as I can’t touch the bottom and I immediately sink, so I know for sure if I were in that situation that would be my end.

As MLK said: "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." We are watching the dark passage of that arc, the sacrifices that never saw the light of gratitude and it's amazing to witness. This episode was beautifully written, with absolutely stunning monologues from Serkis and Skarsgård. Even the one Mon Mothma scene was vibrating with energy, her being caught between a rock and hard place trembling with anxiety and fear. Like Adam said it completely changes the way I'll watch anything star wars related from now on.

hands down my favorite episode of the season! i especially love that no one suddenly becomes over the top vengeful, skilled at fighting, or ready to kill. they're all very desperate & ready to make a move. but they're still a ragtag group of prisoners suddenly going for a prison break. which makes it feel more visceral because there's all this risk there that wouldn't exist if everything was perfectly planned or they were all just fully capable out of nowhere.

@@s.patterson5698Lucasfilm needs to study this series and completely grasp why it is so great and why many of the other Star Wars shows and movies have been a disappointment (e.g. "The Last Jedi", "Ahsoka", etc). And what's interesting is that "Andor" is missing almost all of the core things that we thought made a Star Wars presentation: The Force, lightsabers, lots of non-human aliens, space battles. "Andor" has none of these things, except a tiny bit of space battle (which was KICK-ASS!) and yet it FEELS more like Star Wars than just about anything else we've seen in many years.

@bitchoflivingblah

He made zero sacrifice, it was Cassa and Birnok who planned the escape and it was Birnock who ACTUALLY died trying to take down one of the guards. He was the real hero not Kino. Kino had to be bullied, cajoled and persuaded to break out and only did so when it became clear there was only one choice, one way out you could say. He didn't sacrifice anything, Birnok sacrified his life. Kino was a loser and it didn't surprise me at all he couldn't swim, he's a man out of his depth !!!!!!

@@bitchoflivingblah you’re acting as if Kino wasn’t the rallying force on the intercom that rallied the entire prison to freedom…
@bitchoflivingblah
@bitchoflivingblah 2 жыл бұрын
@@beanbag_37 That was practically the last act of the prison break, it was Cassa who told the prison guard to shut off the power. All that had to to be done was to hail the prisoners to get out, most of them were already climbing out at that point as the screen of dots showed quite clearly. That's not a heroic act it's made out to be. And Kino had to be cajoled into making a more forceful speech by Cassa. The real heroes of the prison break are Cassa and Birnok, who planned and executed the break. Cassa used Kino to help him him 'rally' the other prisoners but they already knew what to do, to insinuate otherwise would be incredibly insulting,

I dont understand why they can't all be heroes. Kino did all of that knowing that he was not going to get out. Regardless of the time it took him to convert, he was influential in giving those prisoners' the courage to touch those floors and escape. There is no one hero here or there. They are ALL heroes including Cass, Birnok AND Kino.
@bitchoflivingblah
@bitchoflivingblah 2 жыл бұрын
@@tawntawn7225 Which was the point I was trying to make. This needless hagiographic depiction of Kino is so disparaging of the others who made more telling and significant contributions to the escape. Yes Kino helped, finally, but only when it became clear there was no other way. Look at Melshi snide remarks to Kino, he knew what kind of person Kino was. That's why I believe Melshi and Cassa became friends.

I think one of the most fascinating character journeys--which isn't really going unnoticed, but maybe the full implications aren't--is that Mon Mothma, while trying to start a rebellion, is still trying to use the system the way it's meant to be used to solve these problems. And the thought-provoking question is what do people of conscience do when they've played by the rules and nobody is listening?

Another episode of pure awe! Space wizards had their day and this is the vacuum they created. The lay people now have to fix things and take destiny into their own hands to survive. There will be a time when the Jedi return but this time is not now. This is the nitty gritty reality where everyone is under tyranny unless they are a part of it. This era of Star Wars is the people's era and it's so fascinating. Everyone doing what they must to survive. I think Disney and Lucasfilm should take a look at your reactions to this show and plan the future of Star Wars off the back of it. New stories focussing on the grey areas...the seeds of dissent and all the things in between. I'm up for all of that!

I think another thing that’s so great about Kino’s arc is that if you re-watch this episode you see in the subtext that Kino knows he’s not going to make it out alive because he knows the only way out is one he can’t survive but he also knows he is the only man who can lead this jailbreak. Regardless, he gets to free his fellow kin and die on his own terms. Pour one out for this unsung hero of the rebellion.

For the first time a couple of civilians with no lightsabers or powers made a vow to defy an empire they paved the way fought through darkness for the last jedi to end it all, how poetic is that and how this opens our eyes for the whole triology when the rebels are a well oiled machine, this show made me love Star wars again.

Ugh this is why watching reactions is so useful, discovering yet another small moment in show that I hadn't noticed before: When the prisoners are running through the halls with the guns, working towards their freedom there's a small moment when they turn a corner and meet the other prisoners doing the same. Pointing their guns at eachother for a second and then they give eachother a look... its the first time they're not AGAINST eachother, like in their assembly groups. They're working together, towards liberation.

Fun fact, the guy that Andor ends up running with on the beach at the end is actually a character from Rogue One. He ends up being one of the team members on the beach who help steal the death star plans. It's the same actor/same character. Very cool continuity. (real) Almost continuity as cool as the fact that Kino is then captured by the empire, tortured until he loses his mind, his memory and his identity, only to discover long dormant force powers where he assumes the new moniker.....snoke

6:17 "This is how the rich get richer, y'all." Absolutely correct. And he's also right about Mom Matha is being courted in this moment by the "Dark Side." Luthern has already been seduced by the Dark Side (hence his symbolic attire). The only thing is that they are not force-sensitive, but the Dark Side is about PERSONAL enslavement. Andor was tempted by the Dark Side to kill the two men in the courtroom, but he chose at that moment to spare them. Their motivations may be good, but the personal cost...is it worth it? Man this is a great show!

Cassian Andor is obviously going to hijack or hotwire a ship next episode in order to get off of this planet. I would love to see him go back for Kino Loy and anyone else who was too afraid to jump. Melshi and Loy hugging after their reunion would also be nice and hopeful. I have no faith that this show will go there, but it would be really nice. And I really really want to see that happen.

It would be nice but completely pointless in the context of this show imho

@@Superdelphinus It's never pointless to have one hopeful moment in a series this dark and gritty. Agreed, it's very unlikely, but I still really want to see it.

@@kerouac.jackson I mean that it’s not a literal show though. I think if you asked the writers they’d give one of those answers that nothing happens to him because it’s a story and we didn’t write what happens to him. In a show like this the reason his character exists is to demonstrate the impact of oppression, the spark of hope and selfless sacrifice. As soon as he’s shown each of those things, it’s totally irrelevant what happens to him as an actual character. Lesser shows might show him jumping or someone rescuing him, but it’d be a waste of 30 seconds and wouldn’t serve any of the themes of the episode or series it would just make viewers feel good for a couple of minutes. Imho. Watch him turn up in a bar on tattoine in the next episode now lol

Luthen’s monologue is amazing! Like Adam (from pReview’d channel) said - it’s a perfect monologue for those in drama class. Love your reactions on this. So intense.

Luthen’s view point on letting the 50 men go reminds of a scene from “Imitation Game” - a movie about WWII code breaking. To keep the nazi’s from knowing the allies had broken their communication network, they had to let some bad things happen. A rough series of decisions

Luthen's monologue is almost right from the last passage of Motorcycle Diaries. Tragic but real.

The single greatest hour of Star Wars ever created. The level that this story is being told in unreal. The writing. The heart. The incredible depth of storytelling mastery is breathtaking.
