This woman is repulsive. I watched the trial online, but I also saw the pics of what she did to Travis. She slit his throat so badly, she almost decapitated him, (besides the 27 stab wounds and the gunshot to the forehead) and the way he was left in the shower, in the midst of a BRUTAL crime scene... she absolutely savaged him. My mother hated me telling the truth. I got punished for truth telling. Thankfully for me I didn’t buy her bs. I kept telling the truth and ignored her. I developed an authentic self bc I wouldn’t accommodate my parents. I did go no contact over 20 years ago. Had to for my own preservation. I had had had it with all the toxicity and anxiety it caused me being in contact with it.

The Murder was so horrible and wrong. Yet and still, it is difficult to see all her pain. It is the intensity of this pain that triggered the murder. In graduate school I remember having empathy for a person who was in the middle of narcissistic decompensation. Ran to supervisor for relief. Left supervisor and saw Ms. Decompensation eating an ice cream cone and laughing it up with friends. My empathy lasted way longer than her hissy fit.

This was so helpful. My ExH was a pathological liar and I never understood why he had to lie about everything. I'd catch a lie about something trivial and he'd say, "Fine. I lied. What's the big deal?" He just lied about everything. Absolutely everything. It was bizarre.

@@classicaldeb Life's conditioning while growing up in a dysfunctional family is the case more often than not. When I was young and up to about the age of 25, I didn't outright lie, but would purposely omit truths or create excuses to gain acceptance from others. After 5 years of therapy, self-help articles and books, I was finally able to validate and accept myself as someone worthy, intelligent, capable of loving and being loved and realize that if someone else didn't approve of me, it was their problem. The mind and the harmful effects of outside, as well as familial influences, can cause so much emotional damage. Thankfully I was helped and continue to work toward a mentally healthy me every day.

Great channel. By far the best analysis of Arias I've ever had the pleasure of watching, thank you. Her true character shone through at her sentencing hearing when she stated, "I do remember the moment the knife went into Travis's throat, and he was still conscious." The 'fog' had finally lifted in time for Arias to inflict maximum distress on Travis's friends and family who were present in court. Life without parole seems eminently fair.

I agree with the idea that the development of a pathological liar could occur in the two scenarios you proposed. In my experience, working with children who have been removed from dangerous homes, they do have a tendency to lie more often, but rather than as an attempt to portray themselves as perfect, or right, they are more concerned with asserting that the entire environment or situation is fine. There are no problems, not only with them, but with anyone or anything they're encountering.

They give you glasses in jail. They test your vision and give you glasses if you need them. It’s important that you’re able to read written directions and papers you need to read and sign so your lawyer can’t say you didn’t understand what you were signing. It’s important for you to be able to see correctional officers and know what they are asking you to do with body language. Lots of inmates don’t speak enough English to follow directions and need to be able to read written instructions because there will never be a translator available for anything but Spanish. Glasses are really not that expensive to prescribe and provide to prisoners. Regardless of all that I’m sure she chose not to wear them for the TV interview out of a narcissistic need to present herself as attractive and well put together. Source: I am a clinical social worker who has worked in the California penal system for some years.

Im NC with my older sister, shes 16 years older than me, because without diagnosing, she lives within a false reality that she creates. She lies like she breathes, and there is absolutely 0 potential for insight or accountability taking. Im autistic so i live by logic and accuracy, and being around my sister truly made me unwell mentally. People like this can not, face their real self or their reality. Ever. They have built a fake world around themselves where they are untouchable. If things get close to looking like they may be forced to take accountability then they immediately enter victim mode and blame everyone else. Its bizzare to be around bc youll watch them do something and then theyll lie to your face, in great detail about how they didnt do it. There is no calling them out bc that would require them to actually look at themselves and reality, they aren't capable of that. Obv my sister isnt a murderer 😂 but its the same behaviour on a smaller scale. Idk how people can live within that false reality, especially when everyone else can clearly see the lies.

I found her trial online during covid and was riveted, obsessed. She is a special kind of 'disturbed'. A prissy little high school drop-out who thought she was smarter than everyone; and she was until she tangled w/ prosecutor Juan Martinez who peeled her like a banana! I loved watching him par with her so much I watched the entire trial 3x over the course of several years. I unwillingly have to admit she is the smartest (dumbest) person I've ever seen and if faced with any other prosecutor she might have gotten off cuz she was just that slippery. A pathological liar is the least of her mental abnormalities. She's is one of the scariest murderers in history in my opinion and a fascinating species to observe in action. To know that that kind of mental disposition is amongst us in everyday society can be frightening. A person so seemingly average and nonthreatening but in reality a diabolical ticking time bomb that god only knows what offense would detonate their savage rage. In short I couldn't stand her and clearly neither could the interviewer! lol I've watched some of your other videos! I clicked right away to see your take on this pos

This was a well thought out presentation. I was waiting for your analysis, especially, of her motivation. You are the only mental health professional I have ever heard, who has acknowledged that a person may be simply unwilling..."unwilling" to stop building a false personality, or unwilling to give up the power that comes with manipulative lying. There is much to be explored in that! They become power addicts, in my opinion (I lived with narcissists for over 35 years). They love the thrill of deceiving others, being able to manipulate situations through lies, and get away with it. Arias lied on the stand, as you showed in the clip...then she got the power high, and duping delight and contempt for her victim popped out. There is a corollary concept to your idea, and that is the currently accepted principle that "trauma is the start of narcissistic syndromes", which I doubt is true in all cases. I know of at least one case where there was no early or other childhood trauma, but covert narcissism (NPD plus anti-social personality disorder) was the lifelong result. Thank you for helping to educate people on this subject. Did you agree with the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder found by one of the expert witnesses in this trial...? 🎉 PS. Please do a video on the Sarah Boone/Jorge Torres case....

I feel like she was trying to use reverse psychology and thought that by saying she would rather die, the family would spare her life, manipulating them into thinking they are punishing her worse by keeping her alive. Then when it looked like that wouldn't change their minds, she changed strategy, by using her family as the scapegoat. She could have easily come forward and said she made a mistake, she deeply regrets it, she's sorry and asked to spare her life so that she can work on paying her debt. But, she never takes responsibility for anything and cannot stop lying. She isn't capable. She is really good at manipulation, to the point where if the cops didn't have that SD card, she might have gotten away with it. But, it's almost as if she left that camera there as a calling card. She wanted the credit for the murder and wanted to use her skills to get away with it. She's an expert at word games, shifting meanings and breaking everything into a semantics argument. And despite what people thought of the prosecutor, she was the one controlling the trial while on the stand. And while I think she should burn in hell, I do understand why she has fans. If you didn't know what she did, you would never suspect it. So, a portion of the population cannot see passed the facade. They take her at face value and she is good at presenting herself in a certain way. So, when she says " I was the victim" a lot of people relate to that, even if she is the one still alive and we only have her word. If she was a man, she would have gotten the death penalty already.

This is very compassionate. I have so much compassion myself since I am a recovering narcissist and still have some narcissistic tendencies and there were times in my life when my shell was stripped away, and I almost literally went mad and had to make up a new personality instantaneously to take the place of the old one. Very scary. Rebuilding again takes a long time and is very slow kind of like a little seedling growing inside of you. Otherwise, you are completely empty.

Don’t be too self compassionate - it will All Lead Back To Hell. taking accountability is far more effective and truly is a self compassionate action because it will lead to the development of genuinely deep and sincere relationships with others and with yourself. Part of narcissim is being resentful for things other people did to you that you cannot change and soothing those feelings with self pity and self reassurance. Compassion isn’t always about good feelings. True compassion is about understanding what happened in the past and being pragmatic about the best steps forward for oneself or others because you desire the best outcome for that person. Focusing on feeling sorry for the child you were is to be stuck in self preservation and keeping one chained to the past. There’s no growth if you stay there too long. Looking forward to creating the adult you want to be and picking up the motivation to strive for that person is far more effective an achievement.

As a late comer to this story and as a person with a ton of experience with abused children and lying, it’s clear to me that she is an example of a not only a pathological liar, but she’s also intelligent and attractive. What I can’t understand is why she would kill him. It makes no sense, because he’s just an average guy and should have been someone she really didn’t even care about that much. I think there is something else at play, and I think finding out the truth won’t ever be possible. Also, she should have gone into politics, then she could have BSed her way out of jail just like the rest of the criminals in power do.

I spent 8 years with a compulsive liar. Hearing him lie about the simplest things was SO aggravating for the first year or so. But learning about his family history somehow softened me, and I came to just 'let it be', and join in with his eye-rolling cousins, who had become friends. "I need to be whatever causes the least stress" is a perfect description of what I believe formed his fear. Over time, I actually became sympathetic to his ...pathology? He had been raised by his maternal grandmother who had told him as a young man, "I'd rather you be dead than homosexual". (Among many other cockamamie utterances - This was in the early '50s). Seeing this abomination's demeanor in these interviews is giving me a serious cramp in my empathy. Ow!

About the I’m sorry statement, is it possible she did at a different point? I’m sure sentencing speech that wasn’t the only time she spoke, and the interviewer didn’t get her to specify. It’s nothing in the big picture but was focused on first thing in the video so it made me question.

This Jodi seated before this interviewer is the same Jodi that Travis' friends saw and begged him to get away from. This is the same Jodi that Travis saw and broke up with, but continued to have intimate relations with, minutes b4 she unalived him, even though he was courting another Mormon woman. This is the same Jodi that Travis used for intimacies with no intention of continuing a relationship with her. Travis and Jodi both got the endings they bargained for.

Its not a genuine breakdown if you ask me. The sound of her crying is forced and artificial, she is hiding her face all the time sometimes even appearing to peer out throught the fingers, the emotion is not sustained but feels like it has to be “rekindled and maintained” and as a result there is no natural development in it its like an entrylevel acting class where the student is playing an adjective rather than reacting to anything real or imagined. As I recall there was not a single tear on her face either, except for what ever redness you get from straining and rubbing your face. Feels to me she is only doing this to have something vaguely socially acceptable and not too incriminating in place of simply nothing or detached boredom. It’s a crap melodramatic cardboard victim act.

Absolutely agree- it was not a genuine breakdown. It was a manipulation of the jury’s view of herself and Juan because she had no other way of contradicting what he was saying at that moment. I don’t buy that her reality denial is as deep as most liars. She absolutely is aware of reality which is why she makes an effective liar (outside of this contained context) for her it’s not about maintaining a self delusion - it’s about maintaining the control of how others interact with her. She doesn’t care if you know the truth or not as long as you interact with the lie as if you believe it. I would dare say that she would enjoy a “I know you know that I know that you know” situation. In other contexts I do think she absolutely relishes in duping people and offering the truth in disguise so the other person remains fooled (which again goes to the fact that she is very clear on the distinction between reality and delusion - much like in the instance where she gave multiple reasons to multiple people for her fingers being cut after the murder - all do with breaking glass but she told Alyce LaViolette (who was a staunch supporter of Arias, domestic abuse expert witness and all round, man hater in general) that she cut her fingers while cutting apples. CLEARLY a thinly veiled reference to slicing Travis throat, I.e, Adam’s Apple. She reached that point of collapse when she murdered Travis - the false self collapsed at that final, absolute rejection. She just wants to WIN at all costs and in her world she wins by inflicting pain and winning battles of words as evidenced by her retort to the court and the Alexander siblings (when sentenced to life) that Travis was indeed conscious when she sliced his throat. Which was obviously another moment of collapse. She doesn’t care that people know her deeds, I think she’s actually rather proud of them. She doesn’t lie to protect a self delusion- she lies only to control and avoid consequences she doesn’t like.

@@Elzie-Nou good points all there is a certain insidiousness to persisting along the lines of Iknow-you know- I Know - but you cant do anything about it can you ... its pretty raw and brutal manipulation that doesnt even bother to veil itself. In fact its part of the brutality that it goes "I am manipulating now but you are forced to pretend I am not or Just accept it anyway, because you cant do anything about it.

But when asked why they didn’t stop lying, they said “I don’t know”. they genuinely don’t know why they lie, like it’s some faulty wiring in their brain? like. FCUK me THAT woman is NOT insane imo. I think she is sociopathic as a result of feeling extremely afraid and vulnerable as a child. There is no other explanation that I can see for this. I also think Meth brings this very thing out of people in the most murderous ways - seems like they hit a level of paranoia and fear that induces the feeling of extreme vulnerability in seeing the people they are with as demonic figures leading to having to rise to the challenge so to speak.

I have a person in my life who is very soft spoken and seems lovely at a first glance but is a habitual liar and an expert gaslighter. I always feel like I need to keep receipts and proof of things that have happened cause this person is able to make you question your own memory and sanity. I try to stay away cause interacting with them on anything more than superficial is exhausting.

Thank you for exploring deeper explanations of the psyche. The narcissists perception as we know, especially if they are hardcore, believe - have an automatic assumption that their charm, beauty, intelligence (whatever their psycho-social currency is) is completely loved and adored or at least respected by others. On top of that, they perceive that those feelings from others are a deep abiding, total commitment of loyalty into perpetuity. Therefore with the jury issue, the fact that they did not do what she wanted, meant a betrayal. In fact, with many personalities of this type, any and possibly every person who does not demonstrate loyalty -meaning obedience and acquiescence, will be deemed an enemy. Regarding the False and True Selves, I have a slightly different take, partly because I don't like the apparently clear cut distinction between True and False. I call the traumatised self, The Wounded Survivor Self, because it is what you describe as the False Self - the aspect that developed in defence of the ACE's, abuse etc in childhood. It helped the individual survive, but usually is somewhat destructive or seriously damaging in adulthood. In the Arias case, her 'perfect child' defence was her Wounded Survivor coping mechanism. In that sense we all are on a Wounded Survivor Self continuum with some of us embroiled in extreme levels of it and others with minimal aspects of it.
