I like the points about bringing the shoulder just a bit forward to engage the latissimus dorsi and the turning of the forearm as opposed to turning the wrist. I made these adjustments a while ago and feel that they improved my punches a lot.
@johnbulcaster74643 жыл бұрын
The Latissmus dorsi has nothing to do with throwing a punch. It is for pulling not punching....Hey I still like Bertel he's just wrong on this one
@honigdachs.3 жыл бұрын
@@johnbulcaster7464 The lat does have a lot to do with punches. The thing with most modern karate styles is that they have no real idea of punching because they never hit bags and never try to drop anyone. Shotokan is particularly guilty of this. The lat stabilizes the punch for the drive-through when you hit the target and gives the punch a lot of its strength especially when you don't have the space to stand in a super-long, wide stance, which karate people comically assume is always the case. I realized this when I switched from Shotokan to an okinawa Goju Style where sparring is full contact and they don't subscribe to the idea of learning how to punch by hitting the air exclusively. This is something the modernized styles definitely need to work on.

This is the problem with most shotokan school they focus too much on perfer form.. This is just dry land swimming the technic needs to be put into kumite the way the kyokushin practitioners do full contact sparring. In shotokan the sensei is always stressing this point and that point about a particular technic.. to much explaining and looking good. Most black belts holders don't know how to fight with all those explanations in most dojos.they need to get in the water and swim and stop been too theoritical. Another thing is many schools always want to follow the japanese senseis about this and that.. There many westerners who are good in shotokan than the japanese themsevles...

I'm a shotokan yondan from São Paulo and I agree with you. Technique is only as correct as it works in fighting, with contact. Martial arts tend to fall into the mistake of "overthinking", losing themselves in thechnical mazes, specially when they lack the simple habit of free sparring with contact.

Why does turning the wrist or forearm create more power? I don’t understand how this works anatomically.

The snap in the wrist translates from power in the forearm to arm to shoulder , its a link, it structure

@@sassuki My point was that I have never heard of turning the wrist. That aside… there are some clear differences in that technique beside his turning of the forearm. And he is turning his forearm too, not his wrist, and he is doing so at the last 1/3 of his cross the same as it if taught un Karate. Of course you dont need to wait till the last Second. But you do not turn the wrist, you turn the forearm, thats the main point, Andre wanted to make, at least I think si.
@sassuki3 жыл бұрын
@@karatekid3233 he means the turning at the very end. But the problem is, the whole subject is pointless, as you can see that the boxer generates a lot of power, and yet turns the wrist very early so that it builds a unit with the forearm anyway. So I think the whole concept that he is preaching here as the holy grail of the Japanese masters is pointless. Just turn your fist early (naturally actually!!), and then you don't have to think about the forearm at all. It will just follow.

Never sure about the 360 degree spin unless it’s for balance control and control of the core on punch delivery or just technical flowering . Maybe one day I’ll get the chance to ask Andre . Also it’s interesting how he presents Asia’s methodology in karate application . I’ve trained - not to the one to one he has - with Sensei Asai . I’ve also trained with Sensei Kase and you can see how their physiological differences determined their karate and preferences on generation of Kime . I always thought of Asai like a spitfire fighter aircraft and Kase like a hurricane fighter aircraft . Both effective but different delivery and a visual analogy. Comments ???
@andrebertel3 жыл бұрын
The spin helps refine the standard technique. It really bolsters skill. You are so right between the differences between different experts. I have huge respect for Kase Sensei's karate also. Application of karate and technique certainly changes based on physique and individual strengths and weaknesses. This is at the core of IKS. Osu
@markwalker41423 жыл бұрын
@@andrebertel Thanks for the clarity Andre . Hope you are keeping safe and well in the terrible pandemic . I didn’t intend to sound critical or patronising in anyway and forgive me if it did . I agree the spin tests other skill areas and certainly challenging . It would be good to train under your instruction when this lockdown and virus is under control . I’m in Nottingham UK and willing to travel as always . I certainly recall watching Sensei Asai back in 1990 on a course in York UK with Sensei Kato . Extremely impressive . I wasn’t experienced enough to appreciate what he was doing , but his relaxed and dynamic movements were so indicative of his build and agility . I do have to say Kase was never that level of movement , but did his Karate in a very different way . The beauty of karate for me is it has a basic framework but affords the innovative journey of remarkable personalities to lead us down an amazing life experience . Osu 🙏🥋
