When Rusty Yates returned from work fifteen years ago, he found his children drowned in the bathtub by his wife, Andrea. She was charged and convicted of capital murder, but found not guilty by reason of insanity. NBC’s Janet Shamlian sat down with Andrea Yates’ attorney, one of the few people still in contact with her as she lives out her days in a mental hospital.

And he had the family involved in an extremist religious group. They were supposed to sell everything to honor God. So he had his wife and children living on a school bus and homeschooling, I believe. Totally isolated. While he went off to work everyday and allowed himself a fairly normal life. He exasperated her depression til she went over the edge.

Talking about having no clue!... But of course, HE wasn't the one going through the pregnancies and all the hormonal changes that comes with it, having babies and taking care of them 24h , 7 days a week with a very severe mental illness!... There's evem more he was a strict fundamentalist controlling everything in the home, ignoring doctor's advice about her, he did the shopping, she rarely left the housel. Remember they lived in a bus for some time. He was severely neglectful and chose to be blind to what was happening in his home. He said God will provide on a number of occasions. He was not empathetic to the emotional needs of his wife nor his family. He was the type of traditional guy who thought there was a clear line of division of labor. As long as he provide a roof over their heads and food in their stomach his job was done as king of his household.

So many factors failed Andrea and her children. She asked for help so many times, she knew the children weren't safe with her but she still wanted to be that perfect mother home with her children. She seemed like she was very ashamed that she couldn't take care of her own children. And I know people like to blame Rusty, too. But I think his actions paint the bigger picture of the misunderstanding of mental illnesses by so many. How many people, even today, think you can just ward of depression by going outside and having a positive attitude? I don't think he did out of heartlessness, but he clearly didn't understand how serious her condition was. And the insurance thing upsets me. The hospital knew she wasn't better but the insurance company refused to cover more treatment. The lady was at the hospital asking for help. This whole case is sad. Those beautiful children deserved to grow up.

Other doctors told him never to leave her alone with the kids anymore which he chose to ignore. Him being religious had nothing to do with it. Andrea is mentally ill. There are many people of faith who have healthy, happy families. I agree that if the husband knew that she was mentally ill, he should have sought help for her. Has nothing to do with whether or not they believed in God. You atheists need to stop blaming everything on God. Many of mankind's problems are due to man's own sin and disobedience to God. Also, there are other spiritual forces in the world. Just as there is a God and angels, there is also a devil (Satan) and demons.

This is such a sad story. I've seen postnatal depression with someone close to me. It was horrible to see a mother not enjoying/not even loving her child. She had help and support from her husband and medicine. They wanted a big family, but stopped after two healthy children, because the depression after the second was worse. It was simply not responsible to have any more kids. What if she had a husband like Yates had? Impregnating her over and over again up until the point she breaks. He is just as guilty as Andrea, maybe even more. Those poor children...

We know that Rusty Yates isn't the one who murdered the kids; but he shares a slight (heavy emphasis on slight) amount of responsibility for what occurred because of his refusal to listen to Andrea's doctors, his idiotic religious beliefs, his insistence that Andrea was "just being mopey," and his refusal to get Andrea the necessary help she needed. Rusty worked as a civil engineer for NASA; so he clearly had the financial means of hiring a housekeeper and a nanny. A housekeeper would have been able to help Andrea with the cleaning and a nanny would have been able to give Andrea some time for herself by doing things such as taking the kids to the park, the zoo, the beach, and so on. It also would have been beneficial for Rusty to enroll the older kids (Noah, John and Paul) in a private Christian school as a means of allowing them to socialize with other kids their age and make friends while still maintaining their religious beliefs. It would have also helped them by selling the bus that had previously been their home. Another person who shares a degree of responsibility in this is case was her last psychiatrist Dr. Mohammed Saeed as he took her off of all of her medications and berated her for not doing enough to improve her mental health in addition to telling her to "just think positive thoughts and everything would be okay." I'm sorry but just thinking positive thoughts is an exercise in futility with someone who has extremely severe mental health issues and has made multiple suicide attempts.

This mother had serious mental illness and her husband was in a cult religion which made him made her stop taking an antipsychotic and an antidepressant which she had been on each for over three years. She had no help with her children and her husband did forbid any offer of help from neighbors. She was left alone on the house and sometimes he removed the phones! with his own children in the house. Of course this mom is in agony with grief as she is not a sadist and is not responsible do to insanity. Her husband should be in prison along with his clergy. She is as much a victim as her children. She isn't any danger now to anyone and should be released. I pray she is able to find peace as she defines peace. She needs a hug and forgiven by society and ongoing mental health treatment.

He was also told not to leave a mentally fragile person alone with the kids. Can you imagine losing your mind and being suicidal and your husband walking out daily and leaving you in that mental state with a few month old baby and 4 other small kids in a small trailer home? Mentally ill people often keep having kids because if they had the critical thinking skills not to they wouldn't be very mentally ill would they? My heart truly breaks at this story, though I am glad that Andrea is getting the help now that she needs. She's going to have to live with this for the rest of her life. It's heartbreaking to me that so many people in her life failed her and those poor babies. If people would have gotten her the help that she needed, those children would still be alive and Andrea would still be a loving mother. I've suffered through post partum depression. The things that come to your mind when you are in that state are things that no mother should ever think. It's absolutely terrifying. My heart and prayers go to Andrea and hope that she will someday find inner peace with herself. While I do blame the actions on her, because it was at her physical hand, there isn't a judge or jury in the world that will ever convince me that she was of sound mind when she did this heinous act. Society failed this woman and she has to live with the aftermath. It's not okay.

It's wrong to steal, but if your child is cold and hungry mothers will beg, borrow, steal, commit prostitution, and/or deal drugs to provide for their kids. Unfortunately in her mind, she was protecting her children from the devil & eternal damnation. In order to "guarantee" her children's souls were safe she did what her mentally ill mind felt she had to, even though the act was against the law. I can kind of understand her actions (even tho I'm not a mother). I recently read about a case similar to hers in my country where a woman just gave birth to another child (she had two children). She was diagnosed with post-natal depression and she told her husband that she didn't know if she could take care of them well. She was also on leave from work after childbirth. Her husband reassured her that he would help and they would hire a nanny and asked her to focus on resting. However, I think the pressure was too much for her and she committed suicide with her boys by jumping off a building. I often think about these mothers and their actions. I wonder what caused their actions and how much stress they must have been under. So much is going on for them, societal expectations and pressure, including the pressure to feel happy to have a new child. However, having a new child is a life long responsibility. You can't take leave or quit from it. You are responsible for its well-being for your WHOLE LIFE. Can you imagine the enormity of this responsibility? That's probably why these mothers decided to take their own lives and their children with them. Because they feel like they have to take care of them even until death. In many ways, these children are burdens to their mothers, coupled with the guilt that mothers are supposed to be happy when they have children and they're not supposed to feel this way. I can only imagine the overwhelming stress and conflicted emotions they must feel. Poor things. I always wonder whether there will be a system where someone can take care of the kids before the mother feels okay to do so again. Society also needs to not judge the mother and label her names like "irresponsible".

@@Vydio You seem to be the only sane person on here. She had choices….regardless of what everyone says, she had choices. All these people acting like she absolutely, 100% had to murder her children.

Her husband had been told by a license doctor to not leave her alone under any circumstance. He knew she was severely mentally ill and unstable. He needs to be held accountable as well as her doctor.

I feel like we gotta keep talking about how they got no less than 5 children in the spam of 7 years. While she was under heavy medication. Struggling with illness... Her fanatic husband kept pushing to have more and more kids, even when the doctors told them to stop. Andrea Yates herself in prison told to her psychiatrist about how she would tell Russell she didn't want kids anymore because she was afraid *she'd hurt them* but he kept pushing. This woman had barely six months of rest/recovery after each pregnancy, while also doing all the choirs, homeschooling her children, living in a minibus with them for many years. She lost her career - that she loved - to motherhood, was left alone by her husband with the kids even when the doctors told him to NEVER do that (the rest of the time, Russell's mother would be here... cuz an old lady, yeah that would help a lot). She was constantly guilt-tripped by the guru her husband was following around like a zealot. And we're all here wondering why she just lost her mind?

I actually feel horribly that she's even still locked up, be it, institutionalized or not. Anyone have any insight into her current/ over all state of mental health? This story always sickened me. Her husband should've been locked up as well for negligence and abuse imo

Andrea Yates is no longer psychotic and has since been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. As stated in the video; she spends her days watching home movies of herself and the kids from "happy times" and designs crafts that she sells anonymously for the Yates Children Memorial Fund.
